Multi-university survey of suicide risk among college students developed by Matthew Wintersteen, Ph.D. at
Thomas Jefferson University. Online survey of students in the College of Health Professions and Social Work.

School Social Workers and Cyberbullying. (2007 – 2008). Co-investigator (PI, Karen Slovak, Ph.D). Funded
by Ohio University Outreach and Regional Campuses. $7,085.
Collaborated in the development of a survey looking at cyberbullying, suicide training and diversity for school
social workers in the Midwest. Will present findings at Council on Social Work Education APM (2010).
Student Self-Efficacy, Training, and Suicide Assessment. (2005 – 2006). Principal Investigator.
Designed and implemented a correlational hypothesis-testing survey study design to investigate the hypothesis that
students’ exposure to suicide moderates the relationship between amount and type of training in the treatment and
management of suicide, and students’ perceived self-efficacy in working with suicidal clients. Developed original
measures. Presented results at conferences for the Society on Social Work and Research (2007) and the American
Association of Suicidology (2007).
Engaging Distressed Mothers of Disturbed Children. (2004 – 2008). Graduate Research Assistant. Faculty
investigators: Carol M. Anderson, Ph.D. and Catherine Greeno, Ph.D. Supported in part by NIMH R24
MH 066872.
These projects aimed to document the mental health needs of mothers bringing their children for mental health
care in community settings, and understand treatment seeking decisions of mothers referred to mental health care.
Role on project: Member of research team; wrote literature reviews; analyzed qualitative data. Presented findings at
Society on Social Work and Research (2007).
Technology and the professional use of self. (September 1996 to May 1997). Web design instructor and
technology consultant. Faculty investigators: Bonnie Bain, LCSW, Jean Avera, LCSW, and Jane
Kretzschmar, LCSW.
This project sought to identify how web technology assisted MSW students in developing professional-use-of-self.
Role on project: Member of research team; developed technological training program for MSWstudents; taught
weekly web-design courses; dissemination of results. Presented results at Council on Social Work Education (1997).

homes, juvenile detention, psychiatric hospitals, schools, and emergency rooms. Coordinated hospital admissions,
discharge planning and follow-up care. Supervised MSW interns.

Summer 1995 – City of Austin’s Metz Summer Youth Project
Developed 5-week therapeutic job readiness and academic enrichment camp for high-risk adolescents. Facilitated
culturally focused group processing with adolescents. Supervised 5 case-managers; organized staff development

chaired the first School of Social Work talent show fundraiser. Organized a semester-long legislative letter writing
campaign, including guest speakers from advocacy groups and legislators. Founded the school's recycling program.

Created websites for non-profit social service or advocacy agencies, including Austin Child Guidance Center,
