UNIT1 INTRODUCTION

1. Write shot notes on three co-ordinates.

Rectangular coordinate system:

Cylindrical co-ordinate system:

Spherical coordinate system:

2. Define Divergence, Gradient, Curl in spherical co-ordinate system with mathematical
expressions.

KNCET, TRICHY Page 3

Curl:
The curl of A is an axial (or rotational) vector whose magnitude is the maximum circulation of A per
unit area as the area lends to zero and whose direction is the normal direction of the area when the
area is oriented so as to make the circulation maximum.'‘

• In Cartesian coordinates the curl of A is easily found using

Cylindrical coordinate system:

4. State and prove Gauss’s law. Write applications of Gauss’s law. Describe any one application
of Gauss’s law.

UNIT –II ELECTROSTATICS

1.An infinitely long straight conductor with a circular cross section of radius ‘b’.The space between the conductor
is filed with a dielectric of permittivity ‘ϵ’.Determine the capacitance (or) Find the capacitance for a
coaxial capacitor with inner radius ‘a’ and outer radius ‘b’ with length L. (or) A Cylindrical capacitor
of an inner conductor of radius ‘a’ and an outer conductor whose inner radius ‘b’.The space between
the conductors is filled with dielectric permittivity ϵr and length of the capacitor is L.Find the value of
the Capacitance (8 Marks)
Solution:
Consider a length L of two conductors of inner radius ‘a’ and outer radius ‘b’.Let the space between the conductors is

filled with a homogenous dielectric with permittivity ϵ.

2. Derive the boundary condition of the tangential and normal components of electric field at the interface of two
medium with dielectric (10)

Solution:

KNCET ,TRICHY Page 2

This is the law of refraction of the electric field at a boundary free of charge (since ps = 0 is assumed at the
interface). Thus, in general, an interface between two dielectrics produces bending of the flux lines as a result
of unequal polarization charges that accumulate on the sides of the interface.

3. Derive the capacitance of spherical capacitance (or) A spherical capacitor consists of an inner
conducting sphere of radius ‘a’ and an outer conductor with spherical inner wall of radius ‘b’.The space
between the conductors is filed with a dielectric permittivity ‘ϵ’ .Determine the capacitance.

Solution:

Consider the inner sphere of radius a and outer sphere of radius b{b> a) separated by a dielectric medium with
permittivity as shown in Figure

4. Derive the expression for relaxation time by solving the continuity equation
