Conservation of decommissioned engines CUS 285 • 12/09

Engine type 28/33D, 32/40, 40/54, 48/60, 51/60DF, 58/64

General As a result of various circumstances, it may be necessary to

decommission an engine, i.e. to take an engine out of
operation for a certain period of time.

The scope of the required measures for decommissioning an

engine is determined by the planned duration of the shut
down.

Short-term decommissioning In the case of short-term decommissioning, no additional

(up to 1 week) measures are required for the engine. The standard
precautions for decommissioning and recommissioning
engines apply (work card 3.4.1).

The electronic assemblies must be protected against

temperature and weather influences.

Engine decommissioning If an engine is decommissioned for longer than one week, it

(up to 3 months) must be turned once per week for approx. 10 minutes. For
this purpose, the lube oil pumps for the running gear and
cylinder lubrication must be operated (oil temperature approx.
40°C).

The lube oil supply to the turbocharger should be interrupted

for this period. The safety precautions for decommissioning
and recommissioning engines apply (work card 3.4.1).

The engine and the engine systems must be checked

regularly according to the maintenance schedule, in order to
detect and rectify any leaks, corrosion or damage. The quality
of the cooling water with regard to corrosion protection and
anti-freeze, bacterial contamination as well as the lube oil
quality must be checked monthly.

The electronics in the switch cabinets must be protected

against moisture and temperature influences.

Engine decommissioning In the case of long-term decommissioning (e.g. storage), the

(longer than 3 months) engine must be drained, cleaned and conserved. The
instructions required for this, can be found on the revised
work card 000.14 "Conserving engine or components".

In order to protect the electronic assemblies in the switch

cabinets, the 230-volt supply for the switch cabinet heater or
the air-conditioning unit should remain connected. The 400-
volt supply can be switched off.

After a maximum of 24 months, the 24-volt supply should

switched back on for some time, in order to recharge the
BIOS battery and prevent the loss of data.

The appendix contains a list of products for the performance

of the individual conservation tasks which have been
approved by MAN Diesel.

In the case of engine decommissioning for periods in excess

of 3 months, we recommend that a Service Engineer from
MAN Diesel PrimeServ be contracted.
