Adapted final

APE program-

1- To develop a quality APE program, we need to start with the education of our teachers.
Our teachers need to be advocates for this kind of program. We need to educate them on
what APE looks like, why it is important, and what we need to do to reach that goal. This
education can be done through presentations from experiences APE teachers or through
conferences. Our teachers need to understand that the students all have individual needs
and need different types of supports. The teachers and participants in this program will
remain up to date with new information on APE programs.
2- We need to understand the way a typical child develops and the way those who may have
developmental delays develop. Understanding these principles can help to apply them
when lesson planning.
3- We will need to provide modifications and adaptations to equipment, activities, and
exercises for those with a disability that may hinder their ability to be successful in
certain activities. Not all disabilities are the same. Being creative and helping to find a
solution for the student to participate at their full potential is the goal of this program. We
want the students to get the full PE experience where they are able to succeed.
4- When measuring the students for evaluation. We must make sure that we have pre-
assessment data. The pre- assessment data can help show if the interventions and practice
the student is completing is having a positive influence on them. These assessments help
to create a better plan for the student and their needs. The students IEP may be adjusted
multiple times before it is right for that individual.
5- All goals set for the student should be relative and appropriate for the individual student.
Services will be provided to the student on a specific schedule created for that student.
6- Communication between the families and teacher will be necessary. A parent or guardian
will be required to attend the team meeting for the IEP. They will also be asked to
continue to communicate with their child’s APE teacher to help create appropriate goals
and help the child succeed in the program.

With these steps and goals for the APE program we can help to develop and inclusive program
for students of all abilities. It is my mission to help each student in this school district to have a
quality PE experience. Education of our faculty and parents will help to jump start our program.
This program needs many advocates to help become successful. With a program like this we can
see improvement in social, physical and mental skill sets. Providing our individuals who have a
disability with quality equipment and activities that can help them to succeed will positively
influence their development. We will be keeping records of assessment to keep track of
improvements and make adjustments to plans that may not be working for that individual. It is
important to have communication between all parties involved in this process. I look forward to
meeting you all and taking the next step in creating a quality APE program here at XX Central
School District.
HS student with arthrogryposis-

I agree with the parents of this student that they should continue to participate in sports. I would
start by doing an assessment of their abilities to see where they are at. To do this assessment I
would use the Adapted Physical Education Scales-2 (APEAS-2). This test measures gross motor
and fitness skills as well as adaptive behaviors. The test is recommended for ages 4.6- 17. After
the results of the assessment are finalized from there, I can see the student’s ability and suggest
appropriate sports that the child may want to participate in. This suggestion will be in the LRE
where they can still be challenged. There are many opportunities for sport participation when an
individual has arthrogryposis. The severity of the diagnosis is what will be the deciding factor of
what will work best for them. Sports like bowling, track sled hockey, swimming, wheel chair
sports all are accessible for students with this disability. Working with the individual and their
specific needs to help find the perfect fit will make for the best results.

Presentation on APE inclusion

First, I would start with the facts-

What is IDEA?
IDEA is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This act ensures that all children with
disabilities are entitled to a free appropriate public education to meet their unique needs and
prepare them for further education, employment and independent living.

What is section 504?

Section 504 forbids organizations and employers from excluding or denying individuals with
disabilities an equal opportunity to receive program benefits and services. It defines the rights of
individuals with disabilities to participate in, and have access to, program benefits and services.

What is adapted PE?

This is a specifically designed program of games, activities, and sports that are suited to the
interests and capabilities of a student who may not successfully participate in GPE classes. May
be provided for any child who has a unique need in physical education.
Inclusion?
All students should feel included in PE.

Work on using modified or adapted equipment to help include those who have physical
limitations.

Do smaller groups to help those who have a hard time focusing in a large group setting

Limit distractions

Use visual cues

Use verbal cues

Use markers on the floor to demonstrate proper form

Use technology/ video to allow students to refer back to the source if they still do not understand.

Example!
Show a student who was successful in APE. Show their growth and milestones. Inspiration.

How do you start?

Use this presentation and knowledge to help you become a better teacher. Work on making sure
each student has the proper equipment and learning materials they need.
All of our students learn differently. It starts with you!
