ase Study I: SNC/Pernis Plant Bridge B- 66

Background information
Plant Bridge B – 66 is part of the road system of
a European chemical complexlies in Pernis
refinery, which is one of the largest and most
complex refineries in the world, with assets of
over $ 1 billion US and about 1,500
staff..SNC/Pernis has Similar bridges are used
to cross pipe tracks. many such bridges used
for transportation between a number of process
units and Tthis particular bridge is at crossing of
road 2 roads, close to a solvents unit. Plant
personnel use this bridge on a daily basis.

The bridge is made of prefab reinforced

concrete slabs, which have been post-tensioned laterally to compress the gaps between the
slabs. The concrete is of grade 35 and the original coverage thickness is 15mm. This bridge
is one of the access roads to a process facility and crosses a pipe track with dozens of small-
bore pipes carrying hydrocarbons and steam. The bridge has no middle support. As the most
common industrial bridge, which is the reinforced concrete slab design, deterioration always
appear in concrete and can be classified into three types, i.e.
Cracking
Disintegration
Spalling

In this case,Spalling has occurred in some parts of the the concrete beam, because locally
the cover thickness of the beam is locallyinsufficient for the humid environment to which it is
exposed. In these areas the rebar has started corroding, pushing the concrete cover off.
Damaged areas have been repaired in 2003 by filling the spalled sections with mortar.Rebar
starts corroding locally and at some points, spalling of concrete cover is visiable. The road
slabs show no signs of damage. Due to the soft ground conditions, the Meanwhile, thewhole
plant suffers from settlement at an average rate of is settling down at a rate of1.5 mm/year
due to its soft groundsill.
Some basic data of this bridge is available:

Installed date 1976 Span [m] 10

Span height [m] 1.2 Nr. of slabs 5
Span width [m] 6

General condition: As Built: Deck shows no signs of damage. Beams have been repaired;
pile foundation is becoming exposed due to ongoing soil settlement.
Local condition: Minor damage: Some brown corrosion stains, indicating rebar
corrosion.
