Introduction and Statement of Purpose

In the age of tech armageddon, the only limit to the advancement of technology is
the human mind. Although technology serves to advance our society, many inventors are
hesitant to share their creations for the fear that their idea may be stolen or that they may
face legal repercussions for infringing upon another invention without knowing. The
solution to this problem lies in the field of intellectual property law. Our legal system
provides certain rights and protections for owners of tangible property. However, the job
of an intellectual property lawyer is to protect intellectual property, property that results
from the fruits of mental labor. As someone who has been personally invested in the
development of medical technology, I plan to create a patent application to protect the
functionality of a Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Film Seal.

Review of Skills and Research

As I have conducted research in the intellectual property law field, I have found that
a majority of patents in relation to biomedical technology are laser-focused on one aspect
of the technology to prevent infringement. As far as the patents for Negative Pressure
Wound Therapy, most of them fall within the scope of the specific technical parts, such as
pump assembly or Negative pressure device, I would like to broaden the horizons of my
patent and protect the functionality of the customizable foam insert. This will provide my
“client” with a competitive advantage and allow them to receive the most financial
compensation, due to the fact that any other inventor who tries to adapt similar capabilities
into their product will be legally inclined to pay royalties or change their product.

As difficult as it sounds to patent the functionality of a product, I know that with

extensive research and the knowledge that I have acquired about technological
development, I will be able to accomplish my goal. I have narrowed down the medical
technology companies that I would like to further analyze to Apria. Moving forward, I will
utilize the information found on the Apria website as well as my mentor’s expertise to
begin researching the product and learning more about the functionality of the film seal.
With this information, I will begin to write the dependent and independent claims of my
patent application, which highlight what I am working to accomplish/legally protect. To
learn more about the intellectual property law attorney vernacular and assure that the
legal language in my patent is accurate, I will continue to view and analyze patents through
Google patents and utilize the valuable time that I have with my mentor to gain feedback
and improve my original work.
 Conclusion

Through my original work, I will begin to acquire the skills necessary to prosper in
my future career, as well as begin to advance the medical field through the protection of
medical technology. As I plan to present and thoroughly explain my patent, as well as my
journey through the intellectual property law field, my original work will allow me to share
and explain the benefits of gaining legal protection for inventions with many future product
developers/ engineers. This will allow the future’s best and brightest inventors the
opportunity to fully understand the legal aspect that is equivalent in importance to the
invention itself.
