 VERB TO DO IN THE PRESENT SIMPLE
1.- Meaning of the verb "To Do"
Means to do
It is advisable to know the uses of
the verb «to do» in English, these are two:
as the main verb, where it does have a
specific meaning in Spanish; as an auxiliary
verb, where it has no meaning, but it does
fulfill a fairly important function within the
sentence, that of defining whether it is
spoken in the past or present, or whether
the subject is in the third person.
2.- Conjugation of the verb "To Do"
There are four main ways in which
this verb can be conjugated in English, and
which can be used in affirmative, negative,
and question sentences. Some of these
conjugations are even used to form more
complex verb tenses in English.
Present simple: «Do» and «Does»
• I do - I do
• you do - You do
• he does - He does
• she does - She does
• it does - (It) does
• we do - We do
• you do -You / you do / you do
• they do - They do
When speaking of the verb "to do" it
is quite possible to hear one of these two
words "do" or "does". But what is its
meaning? Both words are part of the verb
to do in the present simple, the only
difference is that "does" is used with
subjects in the third person singular, while
"do" is used with the rest. However, the
meaning is always the same , and this will
depend on the use of the verb within the
sentence.
3.- Grammatical Structure of the verb "To
Do"
The structure of the 'simple present'
of the verb 'to do' in negative form is: Suj +
auxiliary (do / does) + not + verb +... When
"to do" works as an ordinary verb ("do"),
use the auxiliary (don't / doesn't) before the
verb.
4.- Examples of the verb «to do» in present
simple
• James does the dishes every night
after dinner.
• James washes the dishes every night
after dinner.
• Laura and I do our own yard work
during the weekends.
• Laura and I do our own yard work on
the weekends.
• We do the exercises on time.
• We always do the exercises on time.
