along with investigating the use of project
management tools and techniques and the level
of support provided by organizations in the use.
From the basic principles of project management, is it in practice
“generic” or “contextual”?
● Project Management practice are generic to a large extent, however the practice shows evidence that it
is also have contextual approach due to some factors / variations in the project applications
● Said to be more generic rather than contextual, as PM is all about the Iron Triangle (Mr. Aries’
correction)
Generic
● Project Management practice considered as generic as it shows common pattern across the PM
Community, commonality that spans differences in context and project type
● Most often tools and least often tools are virtually the same in the split and full samples

Contextual
● Project Management tends to have contextual approach in some areas as it found significant
differences in use for several tools affected by these factors: Organization maturity level, Project Size,
Internal or External Customers, Level of Uncertainty, Project Familiarity and Similarity
● Contextual approach of PM practice shown through differences across industry types such as IT, E&C,
Business Services
What could be concluded about the use of tools in those 3 types of industry?

The different tools used on the 3 types of industry exist because the industry have different needs on the usage
of the tools.

● E&C : Focus on planning and controlling in the process of estimating cost and financial measurement ,
shows greater use of value analysis and QFD that associated with the design of tangible products.
Example tools: Tools that related to bidding were identified to be used more often in E&C and less often
in IT projects, since contracts provide a powerful coordinating mechanism in E&C projects
● IT : Focus on schedule and resource allocation, which tools needed for communicate & organized to
ensure coordination. Example tools : Communicating and organizing, it used to ensure communication.
