F. Chrysander bemerkt zur Entstehung des Themas: ,,Auf
eine Anregung ganz eigenthiimlicher Art hat man diese
Melodie zuriick gefiihrt, welche mit ihren fiinf Variationen
den SchluB der fiinften Suite bildet. Sie ist bekannt unter
dem Namen ,,Der harmonische Grobschmied" (The har-
monious. blacksmith) und fiihrt diesen Namen, weil Handel
- so lautet die Erzahlung -, als er eines Tages, in der Um-
gegend von Cannons spazierend, von einem Regenschauer
iiberfallen wurde und in der Werkstatt des Grobschmieds
und Kirchschreibers Powell Schutz suchte, hier den mun-
tern Schmied dieses Lied singen und auf dem AmboB eine
Art von einklingender Grundharmonie dazu anschlagen
horte."
Quant à la genèse du thème, F.Chrysander remarque: "Une
suggestion de nature toute particulière serait à la base de
cette mélodie qui forme avec ses cinq variations la fin de
la cinquième suite. Elle est connue sous le titre "Der har·
monische Grobschmied" (Le forgeron harmonieux); on
raconte que ce nom lui aurait été donné parce que Haendel,
surpris un jour par une averse - lors d'une promenade aux
environs de Cannons - s'est refugié dans l'atelier du forge-
·ron et scribe d'église Powell, où l'allègre artisan chantait
cet air, frappant sur son enclume une sorte d'harmonie
impressionnante."

F. Chrysander comments on the origin of this theme: "This
melody, which with its five variations ends the fifth Suite,
has been ascribed to an unusual form of inspiration. lt is
popularly known by the name "The Harmonious Black-
smith", for the following reason: the story has it that
Handel, walking one day in the vicinity of Cannons, was
caught in a rain shower and sought shelter in the smithy of
the jovial blacksmith and churchwarden Powell, who sang
this song while he worked and played a kind of ringing
bass harmony by striking his anvil ."
Sulla nascita di questo tema F. Chrysander nota: "Si fa
risalire questa melodia, che costituisce con le sue cinque
variazioni la fine della quinta Suite, ad un fatto particolare.
E' nota sotto il nome di "Il fabbro armonico" (The
harmonious blacksmith) e porta questo titolo perche' - cosi'
almeno si racconta - mentre un giorno Handel passeggiava
nelle vicinanze di Cannons fu sorpreso da un temporale e,
trovato riparo nella fucina del fabbro e scrivano Powell,
senti' questi cantare allegramente questa canzone creando,
con i colpi di martello battuti sull'incudine, una specie di
armonia di base."
