VI. Procedure (Knowledge)

Different networking devices have different roles to play in a computer

network. These network devices also work at different segments of a
computer network performing different works. In our new series after
network types and classifications, we discuss about different
networking devices like a switch, router, hub, bridge etc.

Hubs

Hubs enable computers on a network to communicate. Each computer

plugs into the hub with an Ethernet cable, and information sent from
one computer to another passes through the hub.

A hub can't identify the source or intended destination of the

information it receives, so it sends the information to all of the
computers connected to it, including the one that sent it. A hub can
send or receive information, but it can't do both at the same time.

3
Switch

Switches work the same way as hubs, but they can identify the intended
destination of the information that they receive, so they send that
information to only the computers that are supposed to receive it.
Switches can send and receive information at the same time, so they
can send information faster than hubs can.

Bridge

A bridge is a computer networking device that builds the connection

with the other bridge networks which use the same protocol. It works
at the Data Link layer of the OSI Model and connects the different
networks together and develops communication between them. It
connects two local- area networks; two physical LANs into larger logical
LAN or two segments of the same LAN that use the same protocol.

4
Router

Routers enable computers to communicate and they can pass

information between two networks— such as between your home
network and the Internet.

Wireless Access Point (AP or WAP)

Access points (also called base stations) provide wireless access to a

wired Ethernet network. An access point plugs into a hub, switch, or
wired router and sends out wireless signals. This enables computers
and devices to connect to a wired network wirelessly.

5
Patch Panel

A panel that allows multiple devices to be connected and managed in a

more efficient manner. Computer networks, sound studios, television
stations, and a number of other systems use patch panels to deal with
components of their electronic systems.

Modem (Modulator-Demodulator) – The modem is a device that allows

a given computer to share data or otherwise a device which let
computers exchange information.

6
Network Operating System (OS)

A network operating system (NOS) is an operating system that manages

network resources: essentially, an operating system that includes
special functions for connecting computers and devices into a local area
network (LAN). Example of NOS: Windows Server, Windows Server 2008
R2.

devices/?i=1

Modular Box

It is a surface mounted box used in a commercial and industrial

building to cleanly attach network cables. It is commonly used in a
structured network.

Network Cable Tester or LAN Tester

A cable tester is a device that is used to test the strength and

connectivity of a particular type of cable.

Punch Down Tool

A punch down tool, also called a krone tool, is a hand tool used to
connect telecommunications and network wires to a patch panel,
punch down block, keystone module, or surface mount box.

Crimping Tool and Wire Stripper

A crimping tool is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by

deforming one or both of them in a way that causes them to hold each
other. A tool designed to remove the protective covering (jacket) off of a
cable to expose the inner wires.

Latest models of crimping tool come with wire strippers already.

VII. Assessment (Knowledge)
Activity 1

Directions: Identify the networking tools labelled with number.

https://bit.ly/2L91NV8

Activity 2
Directions: Identify the appropriate item / tool described in each
sentence. Write your answers before the number.

________1. It is a connector at the black of a computer or other device.

________2. A computer circuit board installed in a computer so that it can be

connected to a network.

________3. A device that allows a given computer to share a data.

________4. An input device that read text or illustration printed on paper,

translated the information into a form that a computer that can
use.

________5. The least expensive and most popular network media.

9
________6. A networking device that forwards data packets between computer
networks.

________7. A piece of hardware that produces a paper copy.

________8. A device or unit featuring a number of jacks, usually of the same

or similar type, for the use of connecting and routing circuits

________9. A part of a network. It is a special computer that users on the

network can access to carry out a particular job.

_______10. A device that allows a given computer to share data or otherwise a

device which let computers exchange information.

Activity 3 (Understanding)
Directions: From the activity above, explain the function of each identified
networking tools.
