Front Suspension (Cylinder) - Disassemble

Start By:

A. Remove the front suspension cylinder.


B. Remove the charging valves.

In order to prevent possible personal injury, remove the nitrogen


charge before the disassembly of the front suspension cylinder.

High pressure cylinder. Do not remove any parts until pressure has
been relieved or personal injury may occur.

1. Ensure that the nitrogen has been discharged from the suspension cylinder. Refer to
Special Instruction, SEHS9411, "Servicing the Suspension Cylinders for Off-Highway
Trucks".

In order to prevent possible personal injury, use a suitable fixture to


support the weight of the suspension cylinder. Do not attempt to stand
the suspension cylinder on end without the use of a suitable support.
Failure to use a suitable support fixture could result in injury or death
to personnel in this area.

2. Position front suspension cylinder (1) onto a suitable stand. The weight of front
suspension cylinder (1) is approximately 2449 kg (5400 lb). Orientate front suspension
cylinder (1) vertically in order to prevent damage to the seals during the disassembly.
Position a suitable container under front suspension cylinder (1) .

3. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto head (2). The weight of head (2) is
approximately 163 kg (360 lb).

4. Remove bolts (3). Remove head (2) .

5. Remove O-ring seal (5) and backup ring (4) .

6. Drain the oil from housing (6) into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

7. Use Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) in order to remove piston rod (7). The weight of piston
rod (7) is approximately 875 kg (1930 lb).

8. Position piston rod (7) horizontally.

9. Remove wear ring (8) .

10. Attach a suitable lifting device onto piston (9). The weight of piston (9) is approximately
60 kg (132 lb).

11. Remove Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) .

12. Remove bolts (10) .

13. Remove ball (11) as piston (9) is removed.

14. Remove bolt (12). Remove plate (13) .

15. Push end (14) inward in order to remove retainers (15) .

16. Use Tooling (D) and Tooling (E) in order to remove end (14) .

17. Remove O-ring seal (16) .

18. Use Tooling (F) and a suitable lifting device to remove gland (17). The weight of gland
(17) is approximately 25 kg (55 lb).

19. Remove backup ring (18), O-ring seal (19), backup ring (20), backup ring (21), O-ring
seal (22), and backup ring (23) .

20. Remove wear ring (24). Remove lip seal (25) .

21. Position housing (6) onto the side. The weight of housing (6) is approximately 929 kg
(2048 lb).

22. Remove lip seal (28). Remove seal ring (27). Remove wear ring (26) .
