Objectives of the Diploma:

• To develop a greater awareness of "self" as a tool for change in the counselling process.
• To build personal qualities for growth and professional development as necessary requisites
for effective counselling.
• To systematically understand the purpose, scope, types, theories and approaches to
counselling with a focus on their relevance to practice.
• To develop competencies to plan and engage in relevant interventions for effective
counselling.

Learner Competencies:

By the end of the Course the students will be able to:

1. Appreciate the Purpose, Nature, Scope, Theories and Process of counselling as a 'helping'
profession
2. Understand human needs from the lifespan perspective; identify psychopathology and assess
various concerns that clients bring into the counselling process
3. Integrate the core skills of counselling: genuineness, empathy and positive regard
4. Practice the basic counselling skills of observation, attending, active listening, empathy,
appropriate questioning, paraphrasing, reflection

Basic Course 1 - Introduction to Counselling (2 Credits)


Basic Course 2 - Personal and Interpersonal Development of the Counsellor (PIDC) (2 Credits)
Basic Course 3 - Human Growth and Development across the Lifespan (2 Credits)
Basic Course 4 - Concepts in Psychology (2 Credits)
Basic Course 5 - Counselling Theories (2 Credits)
Basic Course 6 - Counselling Process (2 Credits)
Basic Course 7 - Theoretical Approaches to Counselling and Techniques (4 Credits)
Basic Course 8 - Understanding Psychological Problems (2 Credits)

Theory Courses total credits - 18 Credits

Field Practicum - 12 Credits

Total - 30 Credits

Eligibility:

• A Bachelor's Degree, in any discipline, of a minimum of 3 years duration or its equivalent


(under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 or 10+2+2+1 year bridge course pattern of study or any other
pattern fulfilling the mandatory requirements of 15 years formal education) from a recognised
University. Preference will be given to those with work experience in clinical, social and
developmental settings.
• All NGO personnel involved in direct work with people in fields, such as, health, mental health
and education, and corporate sector personnel.

Selection Procedure:

Those satisfying the eligibility requirements will be called for Written Test/Interview by the Selection
Committee. The list of selected candidates will be notified on the Institute Notice Board and on the Institute
Website (http://www.tiss.edu). The Institute does not take responsibility for information by post.
