Chapter 1
Introduction

(a)Conceptual Framework :

TOSHIBA :

Though Toshiba is only the fifth-largest PC maker in the market, this Japanese company is
constantly at the forefront of research and lays claims to a couple of firsts in the laptop
industry. Among them are the:

 First laptop with internal harddisk drive (1988)

 First color TFT LCD display (1992)
 First pen-based tablet PC (1993)
 First built-in optical drive (1995)
 First 17-inch desktop replacement (2003)
 First laptop with HD-DVD drive(2006)

It was also one of the first to introduce sleep-and-charge USB ports that continue to power
connected devices even when the laptop is turned off. Its latest Qosmio G50 machine was
the first to sport a Quad-Core HD processor which is similar to the chip used in Sony's
PlayStation 3. This provides the processing power that allows the Qosmio to scan and
collate movies based on the face recognition technology similar to the "faces" feature in
Apple's iPhoto, though the latter works on only still images. By using the Webcam to
detect hand movements, the Qosmio G50 is also the first to allow the use of gestures for
multimedia control.

However, one of the more recent failures of Toshiba was its HD-DVD format. Going toe-to-
toe with Sony's Blu-ray for the next-generation optical standard, it lost the format wars and
production of HD-DVD media has since stopped. However, Toshiba has no intention to
use Blu-ray drives in its laptops and hence it remains one of the few companies not to
have the HD optical format in its entertainment models. This puts it behind other
multimedia laptops in terms of functionality, though Toshiba has mentioned that it will
focus on Internet downloads of high-definition media instead.

ACER

Acer were founded in 1976 and are highly regarded within the industry as a key player.
They are best known now for their line of desktop and laptop computers while also offering
equipment such as displays, servers and storage solutions.

The Acer Aspire 8930G is certainly an impressive looking machine with its 18.4 inch LCD
and beautifully designed chassis. The chassis could be slightly tighter as there is a small
amount of flex from side to side but generally the laptop feels very solid and is reassuringly
well put together.

The laptop offers a versatile environment with a specification that doesn’t offer a particular
advantage in any area but gives you enough power to work with for most applications.
First and foremost the machine clearly excels as a media rig with its impressive speaker
output and 1080p 16:9 LCD. Combine those two features with connectivity options such as
the Blu-Ray drive and the HDMI port and you’ve got quite a promising set of uses for the
machine. It really is a shame about the lack of a Firewire port though as I can see this
being a great option for video editing. The 9700M GT isn’t a modern day powerhouse but it
certainly is a great option for casual gaming and is a consistent performer in our testing.

Despite the two above mentioned issues brought up with the system, I still feel that it is
certainly a product worth considering, especially when you look at the price. At just
£879.99 with free shipping it really offers a lot of features. With an 18.4” 1080p screen that
is higher quality than some of the displays I’ve seen on pricier machines, Bluetooth, Draft-
n WiFi, a Blu-Ray drive and some of the best speakers I’ve seen in a laptop computer the
machine really justifies the price tag placed on it.

(b)Rationale of the study :

• This study will helpful to those persons who are going to purchase the laptop.

• In addition to this, people will able to judge the parameters for purchasing of

laptops.

(c)Objective of the study :

• To analyze the factors which are affecting the purchase of laptop of Toshiba and
Acer.
• To give the details about facilities and features which laptop companies are
providing.

7
Chapter – 2
Methodology

8
Methodology :

(a) The Study : The study will be exploratory in nature with an attempt to explore
the prevailing attitute of people towards purchasing their laptops.

(b) The Sample : A personally monitored survey will be used to collect data from the
randomly selected sample of 100 respondents from the various places of Indore.

Tool :

(a) Tools for the data collection :

A specially designed questionnaire will be administered to the respondents apart

from responses to the questionnaire personal; interviews will also be carried out with the
researchers and experts.

(b) Tools for data analysis :

The relevant statistical tool will be used on the data collected for the study.

RESULTS

The analysis of data was carrried out using (SPSS) (statistical package for
social science). In this first we applied item total correlation was calculated on
the data having
17 variables to find out the statements, which significantly contribute towards
measuring perception level.Taking Level of significance at 0.5% equal to .
1952.We then eliminate the insignificant variables (variables having value
less than this). In the first Iteration 4 variables were limited. The dropped
variables are brand ,Price,Peer influence, and Family Influence. At the time
selection brands plays important role but as per the rating provided by the
respondents brands is negligible factor because sometimes it may happen
due to some facilities provided by the particular manufacturer or due the
influence of other persons laptopthis variable is overlooked.Price is the other
variable which is dropped by the respondents as sometimes it may happen
that you decide for particular price range but at the time of purchase you find
some other variant and that is little bit costly at that particular time you go for
the purchase keeping price aside. The other two variables that where
dropped (Peer Influence,Family member suggestion)are somewhat related to
each other as due to personal choice or due to the work environment
scenario these variables are overlooked.
In the second Iteration no variables was found insignificant.
SPSS was applied on remaining variables for the 100 respondents by
categorized into one by principle component method of factor analysis using
varimax rotation and factors were identified.Different factors with details of
their constituent variable are given here :-
