Before troubleshooting this fault code, troubleshoot any fault code that is active or has more than one inactive count
within the last 25 engine operating hours from the following list:
• Voltage: 1117
• Fuel: 271, 272, 449, 451, 452, 483, 484, 553, 2311, 2372

2 Fuel pump actuator has high resistance


Solution: S00000859

Verification
Conditions
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the fuel pump actuator from the engine wiring harness.
Action
• Inspect the pins and connectors for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-361
• Measure the fuel pump actuator resistance. Refer to Procedure 019-117
• Refer to the circuit diagram or wiring diagram for connector pin identification.
Specification
• If the fuel pump actuator resistance is greater than 5 ohms, then a malfunctioning fuel pump actuator has been
detected.

• Replace the fuel pump actuator. Refer to Procedure 019-117

Validation
• Connect all components
• Connect the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
• Disable Fault Code
• Operate the engine within the "Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code" found in the Overview section of the
troubleshooting procedure.
• Verify that the fault code is no longer active.
• Check ECM Calibration Revision History
• Use the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent to find the current ECM code and revision
number in the ECM.
• Compare the ECM code and revision number in the ECM to the calibration revisions listed in the ECM Calibration
Revision History Database for applicable changes related to this fault code.

• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Verify adequate fuel level in the tank
Action
• Inspect for air being ingested into the fuel. Refer to Procedure 006-003
Specification
• If air is present in the fuel flow, then a damaged fuel supply line, loose or damaged fuel filter, or a loose
connection has been detected.

• Turn keyswitch ON.

• Start the engine.
Action

• Monitor Commanded Fuel Rail Pressure.
• Monitor Measured Fuel Rail Pressure.
Specification
• Proceed to the Linked Solutions section if the Measured Fuel Rail Pressure deviates from the Commanded Fuel
Rail Pressure by more than the following: 100 bar [1450 psi]

Conditions
• Turn keyswitch ON.
• Verify adequate fuel level in the tank
Action
• Allow the engine to reach operating temperature.
• If engine will not start, then perform the check during cranking.
• Inspect for air being ingested into the fuel. Refer to Procedure 006-003
Specification
• If air is present in the fuel flow, then a damaged fuel supply line, loose or damaged fuel filter, or a loose
connection has been detected.

• Turn keyswitch OFF.
Action
• Visually inspect fuel pump actuator for a cut or damaged o-ring. Refer to Procedure 019-117
• Visually inspect fuel pump actuator for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-117
Specification
• If the o-ring meets specification, then a malfunctioning fuel pump actuator has been detected.
• If the o-ring does not meet specification, then a damaged o-ring has been detected.

Repair or replace only the components that were found to be out of specification.
• Replace the fuel pump actuator. Refer to Procedure 019-117

• Compare the ECM code and revision number in the ECM to the calibration revision listed in the ECM calibration
revision history for applicable changes.
Specification
• If a calibration update for this fault code is available, the ECM calibration revision must be that revision or higher.

Repair
• Prior to downloading the ECM calibration, check to see that all job images and all other troubleshooting has been
documented as downloading an ECM calibration will remove the fault codes on the ECM.
• Download the updated ECM calibration code. Refer to Procedure 019-032
