Excellent Wetting and Rinsing
1-105-2009 IC_Exc_Wetting_e:Layout 1 07.10.2009 10:41 Uhr Seite 3

Surfactants used in rinse aids must deliver excellent wetting on many

different surfaces, to guarantee a good rinse-off on dishware and cutlery, to
enable surfaces to be free of residues and to allow quick drying. As the rinse
aid solution is also used to refresh the detergent solution, these surfactants
must also show excellent wetting in the cleaning cycle. Therefore excellent
wetting is necessary over a broad temperature range.

I&I automatic dish washing surfactants are required to

provide excellent wetting of different surfaces
remain function over a broad range of temperature from 60°C up to 85°C
enable a quick and spotless drying
Industrial & Institutional Cleaning

Test methods for wetting:

Two test methods are used for the optimization and

characterisation of the Plurafac ® and Pluronic ® products.

a) Dynamics of wetting by measurement of the contact

angle of a single drop of surfactant solution depending
on the contact time (Picture 1).

b) Complete wetting by evaluation of the homogenous

wetting of defined areas of test specimen.
These tests are run in a spraying apparatus. Glass
specimen treated with and without Plurafac ® LF 300
are shown as an example (Picture 2).

Efficient Foam Control
1-105-2009 IC_Eff_FoamControl_e:Layout 1 07.10.2009 10:39 Uhr Seite 3

In I&I automatic dish washing, the detergent liquor is loaded to a

greater extent with food residues such as fats and proteins than in
consumer dish washing. This is because the liquor is only partially
replaced between cleaning operations. Hydrolyzed food residues
from fats and proteins can cause significant build-up of foam.
Surfactants used in I&I automatic dish washing must therefore be
low- or non-foaming and also act as foam suppressors.
In addition, a rinse aid replenishes the detergent liquor after being
applied in the rinse cycle, so that the surfactants in rinse aid
formulations must also be low-foaming and foam-suppressing.

Surfactants used in I&I automatic dish washing detergents and rinse aids must:
Industrial & Institutional Cleaning

be low- or non-foaming
act as foam suppressors.

Dishwasher with speed sensor before test run Dishwasher with speed sensor during test run

Test method for foam control:

Foam control is tested in an I&I automatic dishwasher, approximating as closely as is possible the conditions
of normal use.
The rotational speed of the spray arm is measured during the wash or rinse cycle in a stepwise temperature
program.
A high spray arm speed correlates with a low level of foam in the machine.
Wash conditions are simulated by applying the surfactants in an alkaline detergent liquor with ballast soil.
Tests under rinse conditions are run in an acid rinse aid liquor.
