CAST OF CHARACTERS

VALERIAN
MENGSK

In the right hands, words are

powerful tools of change. They
can incite revolution. They can
introduce bold new ideas that
shape the beliefs of future
generations. And as Valerian
Mengsk learned, words can
alter the course of a person’s
life forever.

It was three words that left their mark on Valerian shortly after he met
his father, Arcturus, for the first time. In the seven years since his birth,
Valerian had lived a sheltered, idyllic life on Umoja with his mother,
Juliana Pasteur. Arcturus – who had only recently learned of his son’s

existence – disapproved of everything about Valerian, from the books he

read to his lack of physical ability. In private, Arcturus told Juliana that
she was raising a “bookish, effeminate weakling.” When the hurtful words
were later repeated to Valerian, he vowed to do whatever it took so that
no one – including his father – would think of him that way again.

In the years that followed, Valerian devoted himself to physical

conditioning, weapons training, and academics, albeit without his father
at his side. Arcturus was off fostering his rebellion against the

Confederacy and had little time to see his son in person. Valerian and his
mother lived on the run, moving from one hiding place to the next to
escape Confederate assassins. Much of what Valerian learned about
Arcturus’s actions during this period came from Universal News Network

broadcasts. These reports were peppered with Confederate propaganda,

but Valerian knew not to take what he heard at face value.

As his twenty-first birthday approached, Valerian’s life and the world

around him changed: Juliana had passed away from cancer; the
Confederacy had been defeated; and Arcturus had become emperor of

the Terran Dominion. After Juliana’s funeral, Arcturus expressed pride in

the courageous and intelligent man whom his son had become. The time
for Valerian to join his father in the Dominion had arrived.

Much has changed since Valerian assumed his role as Heir Apparent to

the Dominion, but he still holds on to one of his childhood passions:

archaeology. As a youth he spent hours each day digging through the

dirt, searching for alien relics that were never there. Now Valerian uses
the Dominion’s vast resources to scour the Koprulu sector for real
artifacts – mainly those belonging to the mysterious xel’naga civilization.

Arcturus doesn’t share Valerian’s obsession with archaeology, and in

some ways, the relationship between the two men remains strained.

Valerian respects Arcturus, but he doesn’t always agree with his tactics,
nor does he view his father’s enemies – such as freedom fighter Jim
Raynor – as his own. Although Valerian shares his father’s ruthlessness

and unwavering desire to succeed, he also embodies the goodness and

compassion of his late mother. Only time will tell if he will retain his

individuality and distinct set of values or become trapped in the long

shadow of his father.

RAM 2/7/11 8:30 PM

i don't think he went through all the trouble of joining forces with Raynor and help in the deinfestation of Kerrigan, by the way clearly

disobeying his father by doing the two, just to become like Arcturus in the future, i think he'll be the first non-corrupt leader in the

dominion

Ironspider 2/9/11 8:33 PM

@RAM: Of the terrans in the Kroupolu sector

Lewis 1/31/11 4:56 AM

a cake?MILGGGG!!!

vortivorti 1/18/11 2:05 AM

never trust a Mengsk, or cake. that cake caused me to be stuck in a giant microwave for 10 freakin hours!

erikapaul 1/15/11 6:31 PM

I read "I, Mengsk" and I felt so bad about Valerian's childhood and how bad Arcturus treated him. u.u

Exodus 12/20/10 7:02 PM

A man torn between his destiny and his conscience.

Alex 12/18/10 3:38 PM

Lol, it would be funny if he actually doesn't become semi-psycho. Instead, he turns into a type of diplomat to stop the warring/skirmishs

with the protoss (Jim being the intermederary). That will be the real plot twist since everyone expects him to be the bad guy in disguise.

Abaddon 1/5/11 5:44 PM

@Alex: I don't think he would become like his father. Yes he might rule with a iron fist but I think he would be a good

leader

cbjbill 2/6/11 1:44 AM

@Abaddon: I gess will have wate for the expanchon to fide out

Emmanuel 12/1/10 4:04 AM

I don't think Valerian is going to become another Arthas; that doesn't seem to fit into the plot so far. But he just might get corrupted by

the Voice in the Darkness as Arthas got corrupted by Ner`Zhul. Kind of a longshot, though; I think that the SCII writers are trying to go

for something of their own design, something original.

Neidich 12/2/10 4:08 PM

@Emmanuel: My money is on him becoming obsessed with the idea of becoming the Xel'Naga, and looking for some way

to make humanity one of the two races that become them instead.

@Neidich: I dont think hell go that far bu nice theory cudos

Alex 12/18/10 3:31 PM

@Neidich: Really is a good theory... He may also be the one behind the zerg/protoss hybrid expirements.

Natman 12/22/10 12:37 PM

@Alex: hes a little kid when Zeratul finds the first hybrids, its not him

Wesley 2/18/11 6:11 AM

@Natman: maybe he's funding it?

Azileth 11/16/10 2:21 AM

Dicaprio? wtf?

TheHammer 11/15/10 12:37 AM

Wow, man STILL hasn't cured cancer by this day and age?

thehobo 11/19/10 7:07 AM

@TheHammer: probably didnt have the right medical equipment at that specific place. people still die of the flu now

Harbinger 1/5/11 6:40 AM

@TheHammer: Cells mutate. DNA changes. Of course there's still cancer; it's probably just a new kind.

Plus, it was established that Terran tech was never that good to begin with a long time ago. The first Terran space

pioneers were prisoners shoved onto vessels and hurled into the universe at light speed for heaven's sake.

Wesley 2/18/11 6:09 AM

@Harbinger: If you can actually travel at light speed, you have friken good tech

Baazigar 11/10/10 9:13 AM

Prefer Valerian over Raynor.

He looks like Val Kilmer, just putting that out there.

mike 11/8/10 2:08 AM

Notice the wolf painting........ Why are the mensgk so into wolves?

Latias 11/15/10 10:39 PM

@mike: maybe he was rasied by them or back on earth.

vortivorti 1/18/11 2:06 AM

@mike: maybe because theyr like lone wolves, its the family animal, or there a family of Worgen!!!!!!

Sean 11/6/10 5:43 AM

Anyone else besides me think that Valerian looks like Derby Harrington from Bully?

NightHawk 11/6/10 2:48 AM

I think my portrait shows my view on valerian, although he is not always the most charismatic or idealistic man he is very logical and i

would expect wouldn't do something unless he truly believed it would be the right decision for his people if you look at some of

machiavelli's work vallerian adheres to it quite well, which is why i personnaly believe he would make a fine leader

CypherWraith 11/12/10 10:33 PM

@NightHawk: Machiavelli... Isn't he a Renaissance artist?

Emmanuel 12/1/10 4:05 AM

@CypherWraith: And an Assassin, lol.

Susan 12/3/10 11:50 PM

@CypherWraith: haha not quite. First empiricist of political philosophy.

SwordFire 11/3/10 12:36 AM

jim raynor is more better then him
