The Client

Grace Printing is a renowned name of the US printing industry, famous for

quality printing since 1988. After years of experience, Grace Printing entered
the regional language publication space with a Malayalam newspaper. With
the launch of Kerala Express in 2009, they decided to have an active website
by the name of keralaexpress.com for the same. They wanted the site to act
as an online version of the newspaper and cater to a very niche market.

Requirements

Grace Printing had an intriguing vision of rebranding itself as Kerala Express.

They envisioned a site that allowed them to take their print publication
online. But that’s not all. Besides catering to a niche reader base, they
wanted the site to act as a revenue generation channel. With such a broad
idea on hand, the Radix team decided to identify and categorize every
minute client requirement for better understanding.

 The first obvious client requirement was that the system had to be a
content management system to be able to publish news dynamically.
 The system should support regional font.
 The client wanted the system to optimize the day-to-day backend
processes.
 They wanted the system to be able to accept and manage
subscriptions.
 Grace Printing wanted the system to also act as a promotion tool and
generate revenue.
 They wanted the solution to have a highly user friendly frontend
interface.

 They wanted the site admin to be able to control all the

system functionalities from the backend.

Radix Approach

The Radix team approached the whole project systematically. We started out
by first analyzing the client requirements and understanding Grace Printing’s
vision and business objective. We studied the business domain of online
publications and online news portals. We also studied some other
contemporary websites to get a fair idea of the vertical. Based on this
exercise we formulated a detailed strategy for developing the solution.

The Solution

Once the project requirements were listed down and carefully analyzed, it
became clear to us that Grace Printing envisioned Kerala Express to be a
crucial part of their brand identity. They also wanted to expand their
readership base through this online publication. Thus, we created a solution
that met all their requirements.

 We have developed the entire site with a fresh look and feel using
Joomla.
 We have developed the site with simple navigation to assist end users.

 The solution has an extensive search facility for relevant content based
on category and description.
 The site supports Malayalam fonts for displaying news as required by
the client.
 It displays latest news on homepage to keep readers interested.

 The site is designed to reduce efforts and time spent on

activities like creating and posting articles by allowing articles to flow
from backend.
 The site allows the admin to accept and manage subscriptions.
 The site integrates an advertisement management module that the
site admin can use to publish online ads.

 The backend o the solution has a well articulated admin panel that
allows the site admin to manage various users.
 The site also allows for a matrimonial postings page for its regular
readers.
 The solution has an information centre section for the online users to
collect more information.

Star Features

Radix has always aimed to develop a solution that caters to the client’s
expectations. But we also go the extra mile and add a few functionalities or

business domains that enhance the value of the end solution. We

call these special highlights our star features. The star features of this
project were:

Payment Gateway

The Radix team integrated a secure payment gateway to allow the site
admin to collect subscription fees from the readers through online medium.

Font Support

Grace Printing had a typical requirement that they wanted the solution to be
developed in such a way that it displayed the content in the regional
language. Thus, we worked towards integrating Malayalam language font in
the solution.

Development Server

The Radix team took up the responsibility of developing the solution on

Radix’s local server so that Grace Printing didn’t have to establish their own
dedicated server for development efforts.

Beta Version

The Radix team firstly validated the solution on a beta version and reviewed
the target market enthusiasm before going live with the solution.

The Wrap Up

Through this project Radix once again manifested its experience at

developing website platforms. This project gave us an opportunity to
showcase our skills of integrating special fonts into a system. Also it
reinforced our expertise at open source development platforms like Joomla.
We are proud of our association with Grace Printing (Kerala Express) and
look forward to a long-term association.
