INTRODUCTION

A Common Source Amplifier is one of the three basic single-stage

Field effect transistors. It is commonly used as the Voltage amplifier or the
Transconductance amplifier.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of the project is to simulate a basic Common Source

amplifier using PSpice tool by drawing the Schematics and plotting the
simulation results.

 The process used is the 0.35um CMOS technology with Vdd=3V.

 It includes both NMOS and PMOS amplifiers with both Resistors and
current source loads.
 Models of the MOSFET are obtained from the website.

3
DESCRIPTION

Firstly the Schematic of the Common Source amplifier circuit is captured

in PSpice. It follows the following steps:

 The MOSFETS are obtained from the “Breakout” library, the voltage

and current sources are obtained from the “Sources” library and the
resistors are obtained from the “Analog” library. (The models for the
FETS are obtained from the website).
 The “E source” which is a voltage controlled voltage source with
GAIN=1, is also obtained from the “Analog” library. This source is
used so that both the NMOS and PMOS amplifiers can be simulated at
the same time.

SIMULATION STEPS:
 All the designated values are assigned to the elements. The first case

where in Rbias=10K and Ibias=0A is applied as shown in the figure. It

is then simulated for a DC sweep from 0V to 3V (with a step of
0.01V) for the input source V1. Voltage graphs for vo1 and vo2 are
obtained and along with this, their derivative functions are also
captured on the same graph using a different plot.
 The value of V1 and D(vo1) are observed from the graph when vo1 is

1.5V. This is repeated for voltage vo2 to obtain V1 and D(vo2).

 The above steps are repeated for the Rbias=1000K and Ibias=150uA.

 This completes the simulation process for the given objective.

4
OBSERVATION:

 The Common Source Amplifier with the Resistive load of 10k and I

bias current of 0uA is applied. It is simulated to determine the value of

V1. Firstly, the plot showing up the graphs for vo1 and vo2 is
examined. By setting the value of vo1 to be 1.5V, the value of V1 is
obtained.
 Then the value of V1 obtained from the above step is used to

determine the value of D(vo1). [Because the value for vo1 cannot be
set directly on this plot so we use the value of V1 from the above step
which corresponds to the value when vo1=1.5]
 The same procedure is carried out to find the value of V1 once again

with the vo2 graph. And similarly the value of D(vo2) is calculated
from V1(that is obtained by setting vo2 to 1.5V from the previous
steps).
 Now, the values of Rbias and Ibias are changed to 1000k and 150uA
respectively. The same steps mentioned above are repeated for these
set of values.
 The main thing observed is though the resistor and current loads
change there is no much difference in the voltage level V1(input
voltage).

CONCLUSION

The schematic for the Common Source amplifier is captured in PSpice

and is simulated for a DC sweep of the input source from 0V to 3V. It is
observed for two different values of the resistors and current loads. The gain
of the amplifier is observed.

The graphs associated are examined which shows how the load
parameters effect the circuit and on the input voltage level.
