Coronavirus: All you need to know in under 500 words

Virus reported to have originated in China’s Wuhan has killed more than 957,000 people and
infected over 30 million.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the new coronavirus outbreak, which
originated in Wuhan, China, a pandemic.

As of September 20, the global death toll surpassed 957,000 amid more than 30.8 million cases.
Over 21 million people have recovered from the disease worldwide, according to the data
collected by the Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

What is a coronavirus?

The coronavirus family causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases
such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome
(MERS), according to the WHO.They circulate in animals and some can be transmitted between
animals and humans. Several coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected
humans. The new coronavirus, the seventh known to affect humans, has been named COVID-19.

What are the symptoms?

Common signs of infection include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, it
can cause pneumonia, multiple organ failure and death. The incubation period of COVID-19 is
thought to be between one and 14 days. It is contagious before symptoms appear, which is why
so many people get infected.

Infected patients can be also asymptomatic, meaning they do not display any symptoms despite
having the virus in their systems.

Where did it come from?

China alerted the WHO to cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan on December 31.

COVID-19 is thought to have originated in a seafood market where wildlife was sold illegally. On
February 7, Chinese researchers said the virus could have spread from an infected animal to
humans through illegally trafficked pangolins, prized in Asia for food and medicine.Scientists
have pointed to either bats or snakes as possible sources.

Should I worry? How can I protect myself?

The WHO declared the virus a pandemic on March 11 and said it was “deeply concerned by the
alarming levels of spread and severity” of the outbreak. The WHO recommends basic hygiene
such as regularly washing hands with soap and water, and covering your mouth with your elbow
when sneezing or coughing.

Maintain “physical distancing” – keeping at least 1 metre (three feet) between yourself and
others – particularly if they are coughing and sneezing, and avoid touching your face, eyes and
mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid unnecessary, unprotected contact with animals and be sure to thoroughly wash hands
after contact.

Two-nation theory - the foresight of Jinnah

The two-nation theory was a concept that emphasised a separate state for the Muslims in the
subcontinent. From looking into history, it clearly shows that after the advent of Islam in the
subcontinent, Muslim nationalism evolved as Muslims and Hindus could not co-exist without
nationalism rearing its head.

The Bhakti movement, Deen-e-Ilahi and other similar ideologies, which tried to absorb Islam
into Hinduism, prompted Muslim scholars to attempt to preserve the purity of Islam. After the
British occupation of the subcontinent, the domination by Hindus, backwardness of Muslims
and the threat for their survival, coupled with sporadic clashes between Hindus and Muslims
led to the two-nation theory.

The theory describes Muslims as a nation, with different culture, heritage, values and
civilisation. The Congress party wanted India to remain united as a secular state with equality
for followers of all religions. But the two-nation theory resulted in the partition of British India
and the emergence of two separate nations: Pakistan and India.

After more than 70 years, the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in the
Indian parliament later last year, which triggered widespread protests all over the country. The
bill was passed to provide a pathway to citizenship for refugees who came to India from
Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan with one specific caveat: these refugees cannot be
Muslims.
The approval of the law — widely interpreted by the more than 200 million Indian Muslims as
anti-Muslim — proved beyond a doubt that the RSS ideal of Hindutva is becoming a reality in
India, with the objective of suppressing — and worse — evicting Muslims from India. It clearly
depicts the foresight of Mohammad Ali Jinnah when he stated: “‘When you [the Congress] talk
of democracy, you are thoroughly dishonest. When you talk of democracy you mean Hindu Raj,
to dominate over the Muslims, a totally different nation, different in culture, different in
everything. You yourself are working for Hindu nationalism and Hindu Raj.” The current
situation of India, especially the recent anti-Muslim riots in Delhi, proved that the steps taken by
Jinnah which were born out of the two-nation theory were essentially accurate.

The BJP government under the leadership of Narendra Modi is closely working with the Hindu
extremists to transform India into complete ‘Hindu Rashtra (a Hindu State)’. This shows that
they are trying to dismantle secular India and transform it into an entity based on Hindutva that
believes that entire Indian subcontinent is the homeland for only Hindus.

Since 2014, under the BJP government, several movements have started to oppose the Muslim
community. A cow ‘protection’ movement has led to several incidents of lynching of Muslims for
slaughtering cows. The Babri Masjid verdict in favour of Hindus further emboldened the Hindu
fanatics as mosques were ransacked in Delhi by Hindu mobs in the recent violence.

The political support encouraged the Hindu extremists to commit more crimes against Muslims.
The “Ghar Wapisi (Return Home)” movement led by the RSS to convert Muslims to Hindu is on
the rise in India. It clearly reflects the agenda of Hindutva which shows that other than
Hinduism, there is no place for any other religion in today’s India.

This behaviour of Hindu rioters could be a hint at their future plans for a fundamentalist Hindu
Raj. But the issue in this design is what will they do after the Muslims are dealt with, who are 14
per cent of the total population of India? If they will continue their fascist movement, who is
going to be their next target? If we look at history, then after Muslims, the next target of this
fascism could be the Sikh community. The Sikh community has been victim to pogroms from
Hindu fanatics in the past. If this madness continues, it could continue until only Hindus remain
in India. The process of systematically eliminating the minorities from the country will result in
the ruin of secular India. As the Hindutva believes in the supremacy of Hindus and there are no
equal rights for minorities, it gives room to Hindu fanatics to kill others.

The freedom given to fanatics in India is leading towards the loss of its integrity. This could only
result in radicalisation in other areas — especially in the disputed region of Kashmir. If these
activities of the nationalist Indian government are not stopped, it could lead to not only more
internal unrest but border conflicts with Pakistan too. The RSS policies are not only a risk for
secular India, but also a great threat for the peace of South Asia.

Geopolitics and Pakistan

Pakistan’s foreign policy is based on advocacy of peace and safeguard of friends and not on
oppression and aggression

Every country has a unique geography and geopolitical positioning, but it is not always possible
for all states to harness their geopolitical positioning, either because they lack the political will
to do so, or because the overall regional or global geopolitics suppresses such a will.
Nevertheless, understanding one’s geopolitical/strategic positioning is the first step in
strengthening one’s standing in bilateral, regional and global relations.

Pakistan’s unique longitudinal geography allows it to wash its shores with the Arabian Sea at its
south, and to shake hands with Central Asia at its north. Pakistan’s historical and geographical
contingency with Afghanistan has allowed it to support the brotherly country in its fight for
freedom from Russian and American occupations; our neighbouring with Iran in a unique way
that is different from its Arab neighbours to its west, allows us to have a relatively unbiased and
even normative relation with it.

At the northeastern and eastern proximities, Pakistan touches two giant states: China and India
— two states with the world’s biggest populations and both harbouring regional ambitions.
China being Pakistan’s all-weather friend since the independence of the two states and India
being an opponent to both of us.

Because of Pakistan’s geography, India feels severed from larger Asia, especially from Iran and
Russia, whom it considered allies till recently. India’s foreign policy parted from Russia when it
withdrew from Afghanistan and the weak alliance between India and Iran cracked when India
decided to end oil trade with Iran under US-sanctions. After the Russo-Afghan War, India
hooked up with the US in order to gain influence in Afghanistan that could serve it as a jumping
board into Central Asia.

Central Asian states gained their independence from Russia in 1990, when the Soviet Union’s
defeat in Afghanistan led to its dismantling. Because of the fact that Central Asia consists of all
Sunni Muslim states, they have a natural ideological bonding with Pakistan and Afghanistan as
compared to Iran or the Arab states that are further away. Vast hydrocarbon reserves were
identified in the landlocked states of Central Asia in the 1990s. Being deep inside Asia, they
need a route to the sea to export their oil and gas, and the route via Afghanistan and Pakistan
becomes the shortest, best choice.

The 20 years of US occupation of Afghanistan has delayed the possibility of such ventures, as
the US and its defence partner India have endeavoured to lay siege to Afghanistan, not only to
get control on Afghan mineral resources but also to become the sole trading partners with the
Central Asian states, an ambition the US and India have failed to accomplish because of
Pakistan’s backing of freedom fighters in Afghanistan. The Central Asian states are also Russia’s
near abroad and for this reason Russia too does not want the US or India to dominate
Afghanistan. But more than anyone else, Pakistan feels strangled by India from three sides if it
succeeds to entrench itself in Afghanistan, and considers India’s presence in Afghanistan an
existential threat that has to be leveled at any cost.
Pakistan’s geography has also brought it ever closer to China, as it offers China the shortest
route to the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. Because wars in the Middle East impede other
Belt and Road routes to the Arabian Sea, China has proclaimed CPEC as the flagship project of
its Belt and Road Initiative. But that is not all, for China Pakistan’s friendship is a dear one also
because this geographically contingent bulwark alliance is proving to be a partnership that can
subdue India’s ambitions to become a regional player. So, China and Pakistan complement each
other in demanding territories that India has falsely occupied; and in the same vein while India
sits on top of Pakistan’s waters coming from Occupied Kashmir, China sits on top of India’s
waters originating from Tibet.

So, as China shows high prospects for being the regional hegemon of the coming decades,
Pakistan has chosen wisely to ally with it. As China grew economically, it also garnered another
vital ally, Russia, who has opened its arms to several BRI projects on and through its soil. The
two, complement each other’s foreign policies and repel a common adversary, the US. Russia’s
coupling up with Iran and Turkey to take control of Syria makes for an overall alliance framework
that Pakistan would comfortably fit into.

On the other hand, Turkey’s opposite in the Islamic World, Saudi Arabia, is also a long-cherished
all-weather ally of Pakistan. The recent rift between the two states over support for the Kashmir
Issue has raised some eyebrows, but that does not undermine the long-standing strategic
alliance that Pakistan enjoys with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, wherein Pakistani forces
have trained their armies and navies. For instance, the first three chiefs of the UAE air force
were all officers of the Pakistani air force.

The 41-state, Saudi-led Islamic military alliance created in 2015 is also headed by Pakistan’s
former chief of army staff General Raheel Sharif. Though still at an infancy stage, the alliance
which is larger than NATO (30 members), can be a potential global force for protecting the
interests of Muslim states. Pakistan’s leadership of the Muslim ummah is well-precedented, as
our forces have remained actively present in war-fronts from Bosnia to Sri Lanka and from
Afghanistan to Somalia, wherever we found the chance to come to the aid of our brethren.

Pakistan’s refusal to partake in the Saudi-Yemen war may have estranged its relations with the
Saudis, but this also makes Pakistan a normative between the Shia and Sunni powers that have
been forced to fight the proxy war in the Middle East. This means that Pakistan’s foreign policy
has been based on advocacy of peace and safeguard of friends and not on oppression and
aggression. That Pakistan’s foundations are ideological, is at least shown in our foreign policy,
which has been outward and far-reaching from the beginning, and that its active posture has
accrued for it a global role that awaits its ‘will’ and ‘realisation’.

Role of Opposition in a democracy

By Northlines -June 24, 2019

Omkar Dattatray

Opposition and democracy are inter-related and cannot be separated from each other.
Opposition is the very breath and soul of a democracy and therefore role and significance of
opposition in a parliamentary democracy can neither be exaggerated nor down played. Treasury
benches and the opposition are two faces of parliamentary democracy and one is incomplete
without the other. Strong, constructive and viable as well as reformative opposition can play an
important role in democratic functioning and governance. One cannot think of a successful
democracy without a strong, united and constructive opposition.

Opposition works as a watchdog of public interests in a democracy and keeps the ruling party
on its toes and criticizes the policies and programs of the government which they think are not
in consonance with the public good. Therefore, a strong and constructive opposition is
necessary for the functioning of a government in a democracy. But the only criterion is that the
opposition should not oppose for the sake of opposition but should work for constructive
opposition for the common good of the public.

Opposition works as a check on the powers of the government in a democracy and sometimes it
forces the ruling party to work as per its aspirations. Opposition and that too constructive one is
as important in a democracy as the ruling party and both of them should work for greater good
of the public and the nation. It is so good that our PM Narendra Modi has appreciated the role
of opposition and has asked it not to worry about their numbers. It implies that opposition is
very important to the Modi dispensation irrespective of its numbers.

Democracy without a strong and constructive opposition becomes authoritarian in nature and
exceeds its delineated jurisdiction which is not in the interest of a democracy. In fact, for the
successful working of parliamentary democracy a strong and viable opposition is a must and it is
the responsibility of the ruling party to respect the opposition for the growth, development and
flourishing of a democracy.

Thus, treasury benches and the opposition are the two faces of the same coin and one is
incomplete without the other. In the successful democracies of the world, opposition is revered
and respected and its suggestions and criticism is taken into account and so in India as well
opposition is held in high esteem. But the opposition should not criticize each and every action
of the government for the sake of opposition but should act for constructive criticism which
leads to growth of democracy and fulfillment of the public good.

As already said opposition is the guardian of the public interests and reminds the government of
the day of its duty towards the people who have elected them to power.

Therefore, a constructive opposition is the watchdog of the interests of the people like the
fourth estate. But the opposition should not blindly oppose acts of the government as is seen in
our country and this is a cause of concern. Opposition thus should not obstruct the governance
but should rather facilitate it.

Opposition should know its rights, obligations and the role and should work for the furtherance
of the democratic culture and not criticize the good works of the government. As said at the
outset that treasury benches and the opposition are the two wheels of the cart of democratic
governance and both should work in unison for the nation’s good. Thus, in a democracy
opposition counts.

Opposition parties are inseparable components/elements of the parliament and they should
function according to the rules of the game, reassuring the application of those checks and
balances with their contribution to government policies and constructive criticism.

In fact, opposition parties oppose the parties in power by voicing their different views, issues
and criticizing the government. An opposition ensures that the party or parties in power do not
misuse, exceed or abuse the mandate the people have given them.

Opposition exposes the weaknesses of the ruling party. In a democracy like ours opposition is as
important as the treasury benches provided it is strong and performs the function of
constructive opposition and criticism.
The role of opposition is to constructively criticize the policies and programs of the government
and make the government to work in accordance with the public good.

The opposition’s main role is to question the government of the day and hold them accountable
to public. The manner in which opposition parties work together can influence the outcomes –
if they succeed in working together and in building the political numbers, they even increase the
chances of toppling the government but this is not a possibility in today as the opposition does
not have such a numerical strength but the unity among the opposition parties can exert checks
and balances on the ruling party and this is the shining example of democracy and opposition in
action. Constructively criticizing the policies, plans, bills, laws which in accordance with them
are against the common people’s welfare are the functions of the opposition parties.

Opposition should highlight the negative points of these. Opposition in fact acts as the real
voice of the people and the society. They carry the suggestions of the civil society to the
parliament and the government at the centre. But alas the present Congress party and the
other opposition parties are of very little use! They only act to disturb parliamentary debates
and proceedings. They hardly make suggestions or contribute to debates. They only disturb the
parliamentary debates and proceedings instead of contributing to these.

To sum up opposition has a very important and positive role to play in a democracy. Its role is
not to criticize each and every decision of the government but should support those actions and
decisions which are good and in public interest.

India: A Democratic Country

India is known to be the largest democracy all over the world. After the rule of the British ended
in 1947, India adopted democracy. In India, all the citizens who are above the age of 18 get the
right to vote. It does not discriminate on the basis of caste, creed, gender, color, or more.

Further, it follows five principles of democracy. They are secular, sovereign, republic, socialist,
and democratic. All of these maintain the democracy of India. Following these principles,
political parties contest for elections and the won with the majority of votes, wins. However, the
citizens of India do not vote in abundance. There are steps being taken to encourage voting for a
better future.

Although India is the largest democracy it still has a long way to go. The country faces a lot of
problems which do not let it efficiently function as a democracy. The caste system is still
prevalent which hampers with the socialist principle of democracy. Moreover, communalism is
also on the rise. This interferes with the secular aspect of the country. All these differences need
to be set aside to ensure the happiness and prosperity of the citizens.

In short, democracy in India is still better than that in most of the countries. Nonetheless, there
is a lot of room for improvement which we must focus on. The government must implement
stringent laws to ensure no discrimination takes place. In addition, awareness programs must be
held to make citizens aware of their rights and duties.

Long Essay on Role of Media 500 Words in English

Below we have given a long essay on Role of Media of 500 words is helpful for classes 7, 8, 9
and 10 and Competitive Exam Aspirants. This long essay on the topic is suitable for students of
class 7 to class 10, and also for competitive exam aspirants.

Print Media has created an awareness among the people regarding their rights and duties. We
can update ourselves just by going through the morning newspaper, getting each and every kind
of news from every nook and corner of the world. Catering to all this, today mass media is well-
established, wherein it is remarkable to see the All India Radio (AIR) now reaches 90% of the
population, TV more than 80% and over 5,600 newspapers, 150 of these publications are
published daily in over 100 languages.

There has been a worldwide growth of the Print Media even after the emergence of the
electronic media. Moreover, there has been an increase in the circulation of newspapers around
the world even after the emergence of electronic media and the internet. The newspapers play
a very important role in the working of any democracy. Our Constitution too grants us the Right
to Freedom of Expression which is manifested, in free press in our country. In a democracy,
newspapers are the best way of educating people politically and socially. They play a decisive
role no only in updating the public but also in formulating a well-balanced public opinion. The
public read about the current events, interpret them and learn to intelligently participate in the
political, social and economic affairs of the country.
Newspapers also reflect public opinion, thus formed through letters to the Editor which are
usually published in a separate column. Moreover, Print Media provides great incentive to
business by large number of advertisements on a variety of things s,uch as a house on sale,
shops, electronic goods, stationary, cloth stores, glass ware, crockery shops etc. Matrimonial
advertisements, job-opportunities, obituaries are all advertised through the Print Media.

Now-a-days, another very popular means of social interaction and propagation that has
emerged along with the Print Media is the rise of Electronic Media. The birth of electronic
media took place with the invention of radio, it further got spread through television, then
through the laptops, computers via internet and now in every hand in I the form of mobile
phones. Electronic Media has a very emphatic and motivating effect on the society today. The
various news channels keep the vigilant citizens updated. Channels like Discovery and National
Geographic keep the inquisitive mind busy and satisfy every intellectual query of a probing
mind. Along with these, there are endless number of entertainment channels solely to amuse
and tickle the audience. Now, quite a number of kids’ channels have come up to cater to this
special section of the society. Television can help popularise technology and internationalise,
and universalise our outlook.

These-days, the internet too is gaining a huge momentum, in terms of its role in media. This is
because traditional ‘silent citizens’ for traditional media like newspaper often ‘speak out’
through the internet platform to let a society hear their voices. This has in turn increased the
society’s level of democratic awareness wherein people of all age groups and sections formulate
their opinion on the social networking sites. It is also because internet can be used by anybody,
anywhere, at anytime easily to express themselves economically. Infact, these days there are
many independent websites established which hope to monitor parliament activities and other
crucial operations of society. The only major drawback internet is facing is that its spread is
limited.
Yet, there is other side to media too, wherein it tries to cater to the transient needs of life and
to appeal to the emotions of masses instead of maintaining an intellectual level. They even
lower the moral tone and publish sub-standard materials to increase their readership.

Many times, newspapers try to ally themselves to particular ideology or a party instead of
maintaining impartiality and indulge in mudslinging or even communal propaganda. These
thoughtless means for easy money provides temporary financial benefits to a handful of people
but prove to be extremely disastrous in the end for society at large.

Disadvantages of Social Media

Despite having such unique advantages, social media is considered to be one of the most
harmful elements of society. If the use of social media is not monitored, it can lead to grave
consequences.

It is harmful because it invades your privacy like never before. The oversharing happening on
social media makes children a target for predators and hackers. It also leads to cyberbullying
which affects any person significantly.

Thus, the sharing on social media especially by children must be monitored at all times. Next up
is the addition of social media which is quite common amongst the youth.
This addiction hampers with the academic performance of a student as they waste their time on
social media instead of studying. Social media also creates communal rifts. Fake news is spread
with the use of it, which poisons the mind of peace-loving citizens.

In short, surely social media has both advantages and disadvantages. But, it all depends on the
user at the end. The youth must particularly create a balance between their academic
performances, physical activities, and social media. Excess use of anything is harmful and the
same thing applies to social media. Therefore, we must strive to live a satisfying life with the
right balance.

Essay on the Importance of Being on Time

Article shared by

Most people regard lateness as a minor and pardonable offence and sometimes turn up to
engagements intentionally late, expecting the other party to easily forgive them. This attitude
towards time is very common among young people and people without demanding or busy
schedules.

Being late communicates more than ‘something held me back for a few seconds’, it speaks
volumes about your character, it has the ability to negatively affect the success or otherwise of a
meeting and create an unfavorable reputation that would last many years.

When we are the one running late to a meeting we automatically expect to be forgiven and see
nothing really wrong with our action, but when we are the one who has to wait for someone
running late, we see the importance of being on time and grasp the undesirability of lateness.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

For many years, teachers have highlighted the importance of being punctual, not only for the
meeting or the other person’s sake but for one’s self. When we show up to a meeting at the
exact time we say we would, we develop a sense of responsibility and pride for being able to do
what we have said and are most likely to repeat the act.
Even if the other party runs late, arriving early gives one time to settle and prepare for the
meeting and puts the other party in an apologetic mode, ready to compromise to compensate
for being late, this can be the difference between the success and failure of the meeting.

Perhaps punctuality is most important in business, as the saying goes ‘time is money’. Many
businessmen have ruined profitable opportunities by being late to meetings. Lateness more
than anything communicates unprofessionalism; it puts into question everything you say,’ if you
say you will be here at two o’clock and you were not, how am I sure you can or will deliver on
what you say; besides you have not stuck to your words so far’.

Punctuality on the other hand communicates discipline and reliability; every other factor
considered no businessman will shun a person who is punctual, he/she is seen as serious and
professional. Many successful businessmen stress the importance of punctuality in their
success; many say it is their secret.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

I once had an interview with a very picky businessman, the friend who recommended me the
job told tales of his impatient and rude nature. Although the appointment had been scheduled
a month earlier, I turned up early as possible on the date and waited, it turned out he had
forgotten about the meeting and was extremely sorry, later he disclosed that my punctuality to
the meeting was what convinced him to give me the job.

More than anything punctuality communicates respect for the other party and interest in the
purpose of the meeting. It makes sense that we devote our time to things we consider
important, thus people are honored when people turn up on time for meetings it means the
meeting is important to us.
Even worse than being late is being late with excuses, this only adds to an already questionable
reputation because we shift blame to some other individual or process. If you are running late
and there is nothing you can do to prevent it, it is best to contact the other person and inform
them of your situation that way he/she can decide if to wait or postpone the meeting rather
than keep them staring at the ceiling, at the door and out of the window

Islam: a religion of peace and justice

Islam: a religion of peace and justice

Islam is a religion of peace in the fullest sense of the word. The Quran calls its way "…The ways
of peace…" [Quran: 5:16] It describes reconciliation as the best policy [Quran: 4:128], and states
that God abhors any disturbance of peace [Quran: 2:205]

The root word of Islam is 'Silm', which means peace. So the spirit of Islam is the spirit of peace.
The first verse of the Quran breathes the spirit of peace; it reads: "In the name of God, the Most
Merciful, the Most Compassionate."

This verse is repeated in the Quran no less than 114 times. It shows the great importance Islam
attaches to such values as Mercy and Compassion. One of God's names, according to the Quran,
is As-Salaam, which means Peace. Moreover, the Quran states that the Prophet Muhammad
sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) (may Allah exalt his mention) was
sent to the world as a mercy to mankind. [Quran: 21:107]
A perusal of the Quran shows that most verses of the Quran (and also the Hadeeth) are based
on peace and kindness, either directly or indirectly. The ideal society, according to the Quran is
Dar As-Salaam, that is, the house of peace [Quran: 10:25]

The Quran presents the universe as a model, which is characterised by harmony and peace
[Quran: 36:40] When God created heaven and earth, He so ordered things that each part might
perform its function peacefully without clashing with any other. The Quran tells us that "It is not
allowable [i.e., possible] for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but
each, in an orbit, is swimming." [Quran: 36:40] For billions of years, therefore, the entire
universe has been fulfilling its function in total harmony with His divine plan.

According to Islam, peace is not simply an absence of war. Peace opens doors to all kinds of
opportunities which are present in any given situation. It is only in a peaceful situation that
planned activities are possible. It is for this reason that the Quran says: "…And settlement is
best…" [Quran: 4:128] Similarly, Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may
Allah exalt his mention ) has observed: "God grants to gentleness (Rifq) what He does not grant
to violence ('Unf). [Abu Daawood]

According to Islam, peace is the rule and war is only an exception. Even in defensive war we
have to analyse its result; if the result is doubtful, Muslims should avoid war. Stray acts of
aggression are not enough for Muslims to rush into war. They have to assess the whole situation
and adopt a policy of avoidance when war is not certain to achieve a positive result.

In actual fact, the mission of all the Prophets from Aadam (Adam) to 'Eesaa (Jesus), may Allah
exalt their mention, was one and the same - of establishing the ideology of monotheism in the
world, so that man might worship the One God alone. As we know, there came a large number
of Prophets in ancient times but the message of monotheism remained at the initial stage; it
could not culminate in revolution.

In ancient times, the system of monarchy was entrenched throughout the world. The kings, in
order to secure their political interests, adopted the course of religious persecution. These kings
suppressed all religious movements that were different from the state religion. They would nip
all 'apostasy' in the bud since they saw religion as a matter of affirming one's loyalty to the
state. If a person adhered to a religion other than the state religion, he was regarded as a rebel.

That is why in ancient times, prophetic movements could go no further than the state of
Da'wah, or invitation to Islam. No sooner would a movement based on monotheism arise than
the coercive political system would be activated to pull it out by its roots. The reason for the
absence of any historical record of Prophets (besides the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu
`alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )) in antiquity is traceable to the intense
opposition of these coercive political systems.

All the Prophets of ancient times, historically speaking, were like mythical beings, rather than
real human beings accepted as historical figures. Prophet 'Eesaa (Jesus), may Allah exalt his
mention, was the last link in the chain of these persecutions faced by the preachers of
monotheism. Then God decreed the abolition of this coercive political system, even if it entailed
the use of force in order that the age of religious persecution might be brought to an end
forever, and replaced by the age of religious freedom. This Divine plan was brought to
completion through the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt
his mention ) and his companions, may Allah be pleased with them all. This is the command
given in the Quran: "Fight them until there be no fitnah [i.e., persecution] and [until] the
religion [i.e., worship], all of it, is for Allah…" [Quran: 8:39]

Therefore, Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )
received special divine succour in the form of a powerful team consisting of one hundred
thousand individuals. Equipped with this team, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam
( may Allah exalt his mention ) waged war to end this coercive system of religious persecution,
and it was in Arabia that it was first of all overthrown. Then within a very short span of time,
they advanced to abolish the coercive system established by the Sassanid and Byzantine
empires.

In the wake of this Islamic action, the coercive system was abolished forever in the major part of
the inhabited world of the time. This war waged by Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa
sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) and his companions was not a war as is commonly
understood, but rather a divine operation, which was carried out by people who possessed a
high standard of moral character.

However, this operation was certainly only temporary in nature. Its goal was to put an end to
the age of religious persecution and usher in the age of religious freedom. This end was fully
achieved during the early period of Islam, the age of the pious Caliphs. Afterwards the time
came to keep the sword in its sheath and engage in Da'wah work, that is, the call to God, which
was the real and permanent goal of Islam.

It is no exaggeration to say that Islam and violence are contradictory to each other. The concept
of Islamic violence is so obviously unfounded that, prima facie it stands rejected. The fact that
violence is not sustainable in the present world is enough to convince one that violence, as a
principle, is quite alien to the scheme of things in Islam. Islam claims to be an eternal religion
and such a religion cannot afford a principle in its scheme which will not be sustainable in later
periods of human history. An attempt to bracket violence with Islam amounts to casting doubts
upon the very eternity of the Islamic religion.

No wonder then that the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt
his mention ) so earnestly used to entreat his Lord in his daily prayer: "O God, you are the
original source of Peace; from You is all Peace, and to You returns all Peace. So, make us live
with Peace; and let us enter paradise: the House of Peace. Blessed be You, our Lord, to whom
belongs all Majesty and Honour!"

Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman was the founder of Bangladesh. During the rule of Ayub Khan and
Yahya Khan he played a major role in Pakistan politics as a prominent leader of the Awami
League in East Pakistan. He presented a Six-Point formula in 1966, in collaboration with his party
and demanded the Pakistan government to accept them and to implement them the way they
were. The central government of Pakistan was showing detest for the formula for it would make
the centre extremely weak and make the provinces almost independent. It was demanded by
the Awami League that the new constitution should be based on the Six-Points. Sheikh Mujib
and his party showed extreme rigidity when asked to amend a few points. Though at times he
committed that he would compromise, especially before the elections of 1970, but after every
commitment he backed out and stuck to his Six-Points formula. The Awami League, the most
popular party of the East Pakistan, was so emotional about it that all its members swore an oath
to die trying to implement the Six-Point Program. And it was due to that very formula that,
when not accepted by the central government of Pakistan, the Awami League declared the
independence of Bengal.

The Six-Points formula is mentioned here under.

1: There would be a federal parliamentary system based on direct adult franchise and
representation of provinces would be on the basis of population in the federal legislature.

2: The federal government will be restricted only to foreign affairs, defense and currency. And
even regarding foreign affairs, the dealings of economic matters would rest with the provinces.

3: There would either be two different currencies for the two wings or a single one with
separate Federal Reserve systems for each wing.

4: The power of implementation and collection of taxes would lie with the provinces. The
federal government will be given enough shares to fulfill its tasks of foreign affairs and defense.

5: There would be separate accounts of foreign exchange earnings for each wing.

6: The East Pakistan would be given the authority to have a militia or paramilitary force solely
under its provincial government.

Geopolitical importance of Pakistan

For decades Pakistanis have been hearing about the geopolitical importance of their country.
However, the country continues to suffer from paltry per capita income, millions of people living
below the poverty line and above all the country’s domestic and foreign debt touched
unsustainable level. While peeing through the distant as well as recent history shows that from
the British Raj to the current global and regional superpowers wish to keep Pakistan subservient
to their global agenda, directly or indirectly.

In the simplest words Pakistan is rich in agriculture, minerals and even energy products. It is
located on the centuries old trade corridor and it is the gateway to energy rich central Asian
countries. It also has more than 1,250 kilometers long coastline and the largest man-made
irrigation system. Above all the country has a population inching close to 220 million that not
only offer a huge market but also hardworking manpower. Therefore, be it an aspiring regional
power or an established superpower, the first attempt is to keep Pakistan subservient to their
foreign policy and exploit the country’s hidden treasures. It is often said that the British Raj
invested a lot in areas which now comprise of Pakistan, which is true as the Raj had a selfish
motive. It took away cotton, wheat and spices from subcontinent and sold its finished products
in the counties which are Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

Though, the much talked about colonialism is said to be over, it exists in its worst form.
Previously East India Company exploited the area and now there are Fortune-500 companies
ripping off the people around the word and Pakistan is not an exception. If USSR had attacked
Afghanistan to get access to the warm waters, the other super powers are making in road from
the coastline and trying to reach landlocked energy rich countries. India, under the patronage of
the US is busy in building Chabahar port in Iran and also constructing road and rail links up to
the Central Asian countries via Afghanistan. This is aimed at undermining the importance of
Pakistan that offers the shortest and cost efficient route to Central Asia via Afghanistan.
The only regret is that while other countries try to frustrate the desires of external forces, in
Pakistan there are groups which encourage or even invite external powers to make their dreams
come true. Let one point be very clear that Bengalis were not the traitors. They took active part
in freeing the area from the British Raj, but some of the ruthless rulers pushed them to the wall.
A similar condition, though of a lesser magnitude exists in Baluchistan. The rebel groups are
being fully supported by the intelligence agencies of some of the countries. First of all, the
nation has to identify embedded enemies who are trying to fragment Pakistan. These external
forces are using centuries old strategy of ‘divide and rule’ and all of us are falling in this trap.
These external powers are not friends of Pakistan, but adamant at fragmenting the country to
achieve their ulterior motives.

Since independence Pakistan has remained the focus of global and regional powers. There is a
perception that regimes are often installed and toppled in Pakistan by the superpowers to
achieve their vested interest. This is evident from the cold war era to occupation of Afghanistan
and from love and hate relationship with India to the creation of Taliban (phantom now having
many offspring). At present Pakistan faces an extremely volatile situation, which has become a
threat for its existence. Fighting a proxy war for the US in Afghanistan for decades has
completely destroyed the economic and social fabric of Pakistan. The country suffers from the
influx of foreign militant groups getting funds and arms from different global operators.

Analysts say that since independence Pakistan has been towing the foreign and military policy
of the US, which has often offended USSR (formerly Russia), China, India and Iran. Therefore,
one needs to analyze Pakistan’s relationship with Afghanistan, India and Iran, the three
countries enjoying common borders with the country. It may not be wrong to say that at
present Pakistan doesn’t enjoy cordial relation with any of its immediate neighbors. Pakistan
helped Afghans in averting USSR attack. However, after the pullout of USSR forces Afghanistan
plunged into civil war. It is often alleged that Pushtoons were supported by Pakistan that has
highly annoyed Northern Alliance. After 9/11 Pakistan was made to fight Taliban under the
dictate of the US, which was supposed to pull out its troops from Afghanistan by 2014. On the
contrary, the number of NATO forces in Afghanistan is on the rise.

When British Raj left the subcontinent in 1947 it left a thorn, called Kashmir. Since
independence India and Pakistan have been living in a constant state of war and spending
billions of dollars annually on the purchase of conventional as well as non-conventional arms.
They have also attained the status of atomic powers. However, both the countries suffer from
extreme poverty. There seems no probability of reconciliation between the two countries
because of the presence of hawks on both the sides of the border. Even the trade relations
could not be normalized due to Kashmir dispute. Hindus are not ready for another division of
Hindustan on the basis of religion.

Gwadar deep seaport has been constructed in Balochistan province with the financial and
technical assistance of China. India often raises its concerns on the Chinese presence along
Pakistan’s coastal belt. However, India is not only constructing Chabahar port in Iran, but also
road and rail links up to Central Asia via Afghanistan. It is also on record that Chinese experts
working on Gwadar and Thar coal projects in Pakistan have often come under attack to make
them leave Pakistan. At one stage it was feared that the Chinese will completely withdraw their
support for Thar coal mining and power plant.

Resolving the Kashmir dispute; the way forward

Pakistan and India are two neighbouring nuclear powers who share a complex history of
strained bilateral relations. But the Kashmir dispute is internationally recognised as a nuclear
flashpoint, and also a serious security concern, not only for the region but the world. The
Kashmir dispute has been and continues to be the bone of contention and at the centre of
bilateral dialogues whenever these take place; rarely as they do.India had initially agreed to
implement the UN Security Council resolutions but afterwards, declined to hold a fair and
independent plebiscite to let the Kashmiris decide their future themselves and accede to either
Pakistan or India.

It was on August 5, 2019, when both houses of the Indian Parliament passed resolutions to
abrogate Article 370, extending the constitution of India in its entirety to the disputed Jammu
and Kashmir territory. The parliament also passed another order, merging the valley into the
Indian Union, ending its special status.

Prior to these measures, the Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi locked down
the disputed Jammu and Kashmir territory, increased occupying security forces’ strength to
more than a million, imposed Section 144, thus preventing assembly of the people, and placed
political leaders including former Chief Ministers of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and
Kashmir (IIOJK), Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti under house arrest.

All means of communication such as the internet and phone services were also blocked. This
curfew which has just completed its first year is already continuing in an unending manner and
Kashmiris all over the world, along with the people of Pakistan observed “Youm-e-Istehsal” on
August 5, 2020 as the second darkest day of their history. The people of IIOJK have been
isolated completely by the Indian regime from the rest of the world with no access given to
human rights organisations and international print and electronic media representatives. These
acts of the Indian government have transformed the occupied territory into a place worse than
a prison and a concentration camp, where at least the prisoners have access to food, water and
movement.

The prevailing situation in IIOJK, following imposition of the longest lockdown, has only exposed
the duplicity and hypocrisy of the human rights activists across the globe, but it has also
unearthed the underlying differences among brotherly Muslim countries for the oppressed and
suppressed people of Indian Illegally Occupied Kashmir (IIOK).

Despite the numerous economic and social challenges Pakistan is facing at home, it has and will
continue to raise its voice in support of the Kashmiris at all international forums, calling for the
peaceful negotiated settlement of the Kashmir dispute and demanding implementation of the
UN Security Council resolutions for holding the promised plebiscite under UN auspices.

Pakistan is brilliantly fighting for the Kashmir cause and has exponentially increased its
diplomatic offensive against the illegal revocation of Articles 370 and 35A and the gross human
rights violations and brutal killings of the Kashmiris struggling to secure the so-far-denied right
of self-determination.
The two visits of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to the United States and his maiden address to
the UN General Assembly in the last quarter of last year brought the Kashmir issue to the
forefront internationally. In the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister of Pakistan spoke
eloquently on the Kashmir dispute. Along with that, his interaction and engagements with world
leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly had certainly and surely contributed quite
positively to the unresolved Kashmir dispute. Our civil and military leadership continue to voice
their unending support to the Kashmiris in their just freedom struggle at all national and
international forums and in their interaction with foreign dignitaries.

The gravity of the situation, in view of the international community and leaders not willing to
exert pressure on the Indian government beyond mere rhetoric, demands the Pakistan
government to move beyond extracting verbal statements from the international community. It
is high time to make concerted efforts to improve and further strengthen bilateral relations with
all possible partners in the international community.

Water crisis in Pakistan: Facts and solutions

One of the most pressing issues that Pakistan faces at the moment is the water crisis. Pakistan is
predominantly an agrarian country, with most of the economy dependent on water to grow
crops. But ominously, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan is the third
most affected country in terms of water scarcity. If problem of water shortage prevails, it might
have drastic and long-ranging geo-political, financial and ecological effects on Pakistan.

Pakistan’s water originates from a number of sources. Around 60 percent of our total rainwater
is derived from the monsoon rains, but a significant proportion also comes from the winter
rainfall. In addition, Pakistan has a lot of glaciers which feed the river system in Pakistan. River
Indus and its tributaries provide most of the water needed for irrigation. Glacial melt off has
been affected due to climate change, increasing risks of flooding.

Pakistan’s surface and groundwater resources are depleting rapidly. By 2016, surface water
availability per capita had fallen close to 1000 cubic centimeters and is expected to decrease
even further. Pakistan is considered to have crossed the “water scarcity line” in 2005, according
to Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR). The problem of water shortage
has worsened terribly due to the alarming rate of water usage in Pakistan – the fourth highest in
the world – while the water intensity rate (the amount of water used per unit GDP) is,
unsettlingly, the highest in the world.
The Tarbela and Mangla Dams are the only big dams in Pakistan which can store floodwater. By
2018, both had reached their “dead” levels, meaning that they do not have enough water to
operate. According to Muhammad Khalid Rana, from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA),
Pakistan is extremely short on reservoirs and can only save water for 30 days. Furthermore, he
states that Pakistan receives almost 145 million acre feet of water but can only save 13.7 million
acre feet of water. He goes on to say Pakistan needs 40 million acre feet of water but 29 acre
feet is wasted due to lack of dams.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Pakistan Council of Research in Water
Resources (PCRWR) warn of absolute water scarcity and a drought by 2025 if such problems
prevail. Recently the sources of Pakistan’s water are becoming unpredictable. As such, Mian
Ahmed Naeem Salik from the Institute of Strategic Studies reports, that in the past few years
the monsoon season in Pakistan has become erratic. Moreover the winter season has shrunk as
well from four to two months in most parts of the country. On top of that Pakistan is unable to
save precious floodwater due to scarcity of dams.

In lieu of such a situation measures need to be taken to conserve water and solve this
impending water crisis. The first step that should be taken is to provide awareness programs for
the public so that they may try their best to conserve water. The people of Pakistan should be
well informed about the situation, so that they may be able to save maximum amount of gallons
of water as they possibly can.

Furthermore, as we are short on reservoirs and dams, the Government should initiate projects
for more large-scale dams. One such example is the Diamer-Bhasha Dam for which funds were
being collected. The Government must invest in large-scale dam projects so we may be able to
save much required floodwater.

Moreover, cost effective measures for saving water should be implemented at domestic level.
The Government should make use of technology based methods to prevent leakage in pipes
and keep water usage in check. Smart irrigation methods should be used to reduce water
wastage drastically, rather than wasting lots of groundwater through tube wells.

We should utilize other methods to trap rainwater and use it to recharge underground aquifers,
ensuring more water for the future. In essence, increased attention and funds towards this
quandary is required from the Government. If such measures are not taken with swiftness and
alacrity Pakistan will find itself in a highly perplexing conundrum.

DETERMINANTS OF PAKISTAN’S FOREIGN POLICY

“Our foreign policy is one of the friendliness and goodwill towards all the nations of the world.
We do not cherish aggressive designs against any country or nation. We believe in the principle
of honesty and fair play in national and international dealings, and are prepared to make our
contribution to the promotion of peace and prosperity among the nations of the world. Pakistan
will never be found lacking in extending its material and moral support to the oppressed and
suppressed peoples of the world and in upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter.”

Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah

Foreign policy is a plan of action that a nation adopts with regard to its diplomatic dealings with
other countries in the world. This is the policy that dictates how a country will act with respect
to other countries politically, socially, economically, and militarily. The development of foreign
policy is influenced by domestic considerations, the policies or behaviour of other states, or
plans to advance specific geopolitical designs.

In the context of Pakistan, we have seen that when Saudi Arabia expected Pakistani soldiers to
fight in Yemen — though the request was politely turned down — the government invoked
religion; when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pakistan, official propagandists started to
highlight the economic and strategic imperatives that bind together Islamabad and Beijing;
when it comes to our other neighbours in the region — India, Afghanistan and Iran — we mostly
adopt a hostile undertones and perceive Indian manoeuvres in the region as a threat; when it
comes to Muslim World, we present our country as the only Muslim State having nuclear power
and the only advocate of unity of Muslim Ummah; and when it comes to EU or the United
States or Russia or any superpower, we invoke our important geographical location in Asia. So,
the first question that comes to mind regarding the foreign policy making in Pakistan is: “What
factors determine the foreign policy making in Pakistan?”

Following is a brief description of the factors that policymakers have to keep in mind while
making decisions related to country’s policy.

1. Ideology

Pakistan was created as a homeland for Muslims of British India after a long freedom struggle.
Islam was at the core of this struggle because Two Nation Theory reinforced that Muslims were
a separate nation, with their distinct cultural, ideological and religious values. In the
establishment of Pakistan, Muslims actually dreamed of a separate homeland where they could
spend their lives according to the teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet
(PBUH).

Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah also vowed to preserve the Islamic ideology of the country.
He said:

“Pakistan not only means freedom and independence but the Muslim Ideology which has to be
preserved, which has come to us as a precious gift and treasure and which, we hope other will
share with us.”

Moreover, at the very outset, Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan, declared:

“Pakistan came into being as a result of the urge felt by the Muslims of this subcontinent to
secure territory, however limited, where the Islamic Ideology and way of life could be practiced
and demonstrated to the world.”

So, it was not possible for our foreign policy makers to set aside this ideology while framing
country’s foreign policy. Hence Islamic ideology has always been a central focus in this realm.

2. Geography
“The foreign policy of a country is determined by its geography”.

— Napoleon Bonaparte

Determinants of Pakistan's Foreign Policy 1For the policymakers, it is important to take into
considerations factors like what country’s neighbours are, as their attitude, irrespective of their
size or power, has a direct bearing especially on issues of its security, development and resource
allocation. No country could change its geography nor choose its neighbours. So, in Pakistan,
sole consideration has been on safeguarding and preserving country’s independence and
territorial integrity. Geography, thus, placed on Pakistan the onerous responsibility of consistent
vigilance and careful conduct of its relations not only with its immediate neighbours but also
with the rest of the world.

3. History

Since its inception, Pakistan has been facing complex challenges. Hence, the country’s foreign
policy is also guided by its history. Pakistan and India relations have been marred by distrust and
antagonism. Pakistan and Afghanistan have also been at odds since long, major concern being
the Durand Line which Afghanistan is not willing to accept an international border. Thanks to
the old imperial connections, we immediately got sucked into the Cold War struggle. In the
process, we encountered unbroken series of crises and challenges that perhaps, no other
country in the world has ever experienced. So, foreign policy makers cannot remain oblivious to
these factors.

4. Domestic Policies

The foreign policy of a country is linked to its domestic policies, governance issues and political
situation. A country’s standing in the international community always corresponds directly to its
political, social, economic and strategic strength. Foreign policy cannot be divorced from
domestic considerations. It is an outcome of national priorities, strength and weaknesses.
Unlike large powers, mistakes in foreign policy can be very costly for a developing country like
Pakistan. Pakistan’s position in the world is constrained by its weak economics and its
dependence on foreign finances. And, that has been a big challenge before the policymakers.

The policymakers must understand that no country has ever succeeded externally if it is weak
and crippled domestically. Even a superpower, the former Soviet Union, could not survive as a
superpower because domestically it was weak and crippled.

5. Security

Internal and external security is the most important factor in Pakistan’s foreign policy.

Historian Paul Kennedy named Pakistan as one of the nine pivotal states whose future evolution
would not only determine the fate of their region, but also affect international stability. Pakistan
has developed as a principal actor and a vital personality of its own. So, it is supposed to secure
and protect its all vital interests, at all costs.

6. Economic Compulsions

Pakistan as a developing country also needs to establish and maintain cordial relations with
those states with whom it can maximize its trade relations or from whom it can obtain
maximum economic aid. Pakistan’s position in the world is constrained by its weak economics
and its dependence on foreign finances. The main aim of Pakistan’s foreign policy is to boost
economic trade.

A Pragmatic Future Strategy

1. Pursuing National Interest

“The meaning of national interest is survival—the protection of physical, political and cultural
identity against encroachments by other nation-states”—Morgenthau.
Foreign policy of every nation around the world is formulated on the basis of its national
interest. Since seeking its national interests is a universally accepted right of each state,
therefore, this should be the only driving force behind Pakistan’s foreign policy. All our alliances
should be subjected to this keystone criterion. That said, no country can remain isolated and all
relationships between states, bilaterally and multilaterally, are therefore based on mutual
interests which are freely determined and pursued.

Pakistan’s national interest lies in enhancing country’s economic, military and cultural power
within its ideological framework. Pakistan should use foreign policy to defend its territorial
integrity. That necessitates strong defence and deterrent capabilities. Pakistan has to leverage
its relations with nations in the region and beyond, as well as with international multilateral
institutions, to attract foreign direct investment, start off joint ventures and promote trade. A
national interest-centred foreign policy will also act as a catalyst for domestic economic
development and international clout.

2. Focusing Regional Dynamics

Pakistan’s sense of insecurity vis-à-vis India has been the core driver of its foreign policy since
partition. Its relations with its immediate neighbours such as Afghanistan and Iran, and other
regional countries such as Turkey and the Gulf States, have all been filtered through this security
prism. But, changing global trends in regional trade and the growth of Asian economies have
forced Pakistan to readjust the focus of its foreign relations especially within its neighbourhood.
Pakistan’s reluctance in getting militarily involved in the Saudi-led war in Yemen is evidence of
this new thinking. As Iran would soon be rejoining the global economy and also Russia is cosying
up with Pakistan after India’s unprecedented tilt towards the US, Pakistan should also change its
policies to not only benefit from these changes but also to gain an important role in regional
politics.

3. Promotion of Economy

Pakistan’s foreign policy ought to be based on our country’s inherent strengths. As the sixth-
largest nation in the world by way of population, country’s foreign policy makers should take
into account the factor that we possess a reasonable quality of human resources and have an
extremely useful geography.

Our human resource base was good enough to make us the only nuclear Muslim state in the
world. Our strength is our agriculture, which enables us to be food-sufficient with a
considerable surplus of rice and wheat. We also enjoy an abundance of fruit, vegetables and
dairy products and have the capacity to launch all these for export.

We can rightfully boast of the highest quality of craftsmanship in leather, metals, pottery and
stitched craft, and are now entering the fashion market at an international level. Moreover, our
considerable mineral resources await exploration, as do our deposits of natural gas.

Despite all these strengths, we have fallen into a debt trap because of poor governance and
mismanagement, rectifying which is certainly within the realm of the feasible. A growth- and
export-driven economy would enable us to exploit our strategic advantage effectively and base
our foreign policy on an economically strong agenda.

Conclusion

Traditionally, Pakistan has been a security-driven state and that’s the reason why more
emphasis has been on state-building over nation-building. However, changing regional as well as
world dynamics present our foreign policy makers with a set of complex challenges. This is
perhaps the most opportune time that Pakistan should reap the benefits of its geographical
location and its importance to the whole world. Our foreign policy makers should move forward
with extreme prudence.

Where there is a Will there is a Way

There is nothing impossible in this world; it only wants determination that brings about failures.
With a strong will, one can do wonders. The power of human will is extraordinary. At first sight,
many tasks may appear impossible of accomplishment and many are frightened away. Only a
few have the necessary strength of will to pursue their goal; only they know what it is to
struggle towards their ideal.

Occasionally, even very small things like getting up early in the morning, studying for a specified
number of hours, keeping to time, writing prompt letters, call for determination and strength of
will. Most of us are often tempted to postpone too many things and the result is that we
complain we do not have time to do them. In most cases, this is just an excuse.

Many of us are also discouraged by apparent failures. We know the story of Bruce and the
spider but we do not have the patience to wait for final results. Quick, if not the immediate
result, is what we want. Failure is a stepping stone to success but we wish to keep to success
avoiding the steps. There is no shortcut to success and the earlier we realize this, the better it is
for us. Great achievements in various fields have been possible because of men who did not
mind initial failures. The pioneers who wanted to fly got their limbs broken in their attempts to
fly, but this did not prevent their trying again. The result is today we have supersonic planes
which can take us from one continent to another in a matter of hours.

Many of us know how to swim or to ride a bicycle. When we took the first plunge, maybe we
did not like the feel of the cold water; the first fall from the bicycle may have caused bruises. But
we did not allow these to stop us from trying again. Probably we failed the second time too, but
very soon we mastered the technique and today we do not have any regrets for persisting in our
attempts.

Impossible is a world to be found in the dictionary of fools – is what Napoleon, the Great, is
reported to have declared. It is good to remember this whenever we feel like giving up. All of us
possess the will-power. Only some of us use it. The others do not use it and put the blame for
their failures on others. This is what we should never do. If we wish to realize our ambition, it is
not enough to have one; we should always strive towards it unmindful of the inevitable failures
on the way. Where there is a will, there is away.

Cheating In the Examination

========================================================================

One of the most common features of examinations is the involvement of students in cheating.
When students fail to prepare themselves well before an examination, they resort to cheating. It
is true that whenever rules are made, there are people who break them. An examination is a
test where no one is allowed to consult the other and each question has to be answered by the
child himself. Knowing the fact that this can’t be done, students cheat.Cheating seems to delight
the students but he ignores the fact that he is simply cheating his own conscience. He may go
ahead and cheat but at some point of time it definitely haunts him.Students while away their
time throughout the year and then become desperate when the examination approaches.
Cheating is a short-cut to success.

However, in cheating the teachers, the students may pass the examination but he will never
learn what was actually taught and he will always remain behind his class in every way.

It is interesting to see how students cheat. They plan the method for cheating. They write notes
on slips of paper or scribble something on their palms or thighs. They stick notes into their socks
and under their shirts.

Some even write down full answers on pieces of paper. Some carry their answers to the toilet
and leave the slips of paper there. In the course of the examination they go to the toilet and
consult the sheets to locate the correct answers.

At Universities also cheating is a common practice. It is often accompanied by violence.

Students carry pistols or knives with them and cheat openly. They scare the invigilator away by
terrorizing him with the gun.

There is mass copying at times and such cases are dealt with, very severely. Police protection is
sometimes provided to the invigilators.Cheating greatly mars the sanctity of the examination.
The exam is really a good means of evaluating one’s knowledge of all that is taught and it is in
fact a good thing for students. This is something students realize later in their lives. But while
they are still students, they continue to adopt such unfair means of passing the examination and
bring a great deal of harm to their school and most of all to themselves.

587 words short essay on Cheating

‘Cheating are the immoral ways that are adopted to achieve any goal’.
There are different individual approaches regarding the ways to achieve set goals. The ethical
and right way is to perspire and to maintain perseverance in the competitive race. The other
way is by adopting a short cut and following the immoral ways to reach a conclusive stage. The
later one seems to be fruitful in short term gains. But the long terms effects of such cheating
methods are extremely disastrous. All of us feel the temptation to cheat at some point in life.
And sometimes we even do. But then overcoming this temptation is the main idea and the
lesson to learn. However, in some individuals the process seems amicable and the threshold for
moral ways keeps falling down with every act of cheating. This leads to serious vicious cycle
which ends nowhere. Once fell in the trap of unethical performance, individuals find it
extremely hard to break the cycle.

There are different levels and types of cheating. It may range from small school going children
to adults in performance years of their lives. Similarly, the domains of cheating are also diverse,
viz. academic cheating, cheating in sports and gambling, marital infidelity etc. Cheating can and
does occur in all spheres of life. But here we would mainly consider the first option, the
academic cheating.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Academic cheating is adoption of immoral and unfair means to get higher marks or grades in
the examinations. This sort of cheating is highly prevalent in schools and colleges. Cases of
academic cheating have also been reported even in higher studies. This gives a big jolt to the
principles of education. The main aim of any educational system is to develop self reliant and
self dependent individuals. But cheating leaves no space for proper development of the
individual and leaves a permanent scar on the personality of the individual throughout his life.

Children and students are often tempted to cheat because they think it as the easier and
convenient way to get good marks and bright results. Sometimes, the children are too lazy to
prepare for the examination in time and keep on delaying the things. Then, in the end when
they realize that they had wasted the precious time, they resort to such malicious ways to cover
up the loss. They perceive cheating as the effective and reliable method to achieve the desired
grades.

But to their dismay, the aftermaths of cheating are far more harmful and long lasting than the
individual might have calculated. Cheating might help to get higher grades but it results in
lowered self esteem of the cheater. As, his conscious would always keep reminding him that
these scores are not real. He also looses the sense of accomplishment. The real joy and mirth of
success is elusive to him and he only pretends to be happy. It also leads to the development of a
dependent attitude. The individual becomes dependent on others and losses all kinds of
creative thinking and self sufficiency. The poor knowledge of the cheater makes the situation
even graver. As, the cheater had never undergone the subject, he is least informed about the
same. Hence, this kind of attitude and tactics might help to achieve higher grades but these
individuals fail miserably in the real world. They do not match the abilities that their educational
certificates show. Hence, they never meet the expectations of the employer and are always
found complaining about the system.

Hard work might take a bit longer time to show the brightness but cheating fades the shine
forever.

means the manifestation of any unsolicited foreign substance in something. When we talk
about pollution on earth, we refer to the contamination that is happening of the natural
resources by various pollutants. All this is mainly caused by human activities which harm the

make the air cleaner. When talking on a bigger level, the government must limit the usage of
fertilizers to maintain the soil’s fertility. In addition, industries must be banned from dumping
their waste into oceans and rivers, causing water pollution.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Spices are these little things mostly seed, fruit, root, bark which are used in nutritionally
insignificant quantities to pep up ones food. Their unique flavours enhance the food. Spices also
serve as a preservative by killing or preventing the growth of harmful bacteria. The phrase,”
Variety is the spice of life” was probably coined to express how variety if added in our lives
could have the effect of a spice and enhance our everyday existence. Variety does to our lives
the same thing that spice does to food. It makes it more fun, more interesting, more
meaningful. And sometimes just like a preservative it can cure depression, and alleviate
boredom.

Everyday life can get mundane. Variety is the spice of life means that life could be made more
interesting my making some significant changes. The message conveyed by this phrase if taken
seriously could change the course of our lives. It is good to try different things. After all, a rolling
stone gathers no moss. Besides, if serves to break the monotony of our lives – one of the
reasons for depression these days.

If one is used to having lentil and rice every day for lunch for a change a biryani is very welcome.
A cook uses different spices, different garnishes; each rendering the same dish a different taste.
Similarly, if we make changes in our life we could challenge the sameness and lead more
meaningful lives. Variety in our lives does not necessarily mean that we go about making drastic
changes. That would be disastrous at best.

When children study a particular subject over a period of time they get bored. A good way to
keep the child’s interest up would be to introduce some variety. A picture book or a game that
teaches the child while he plays would be a good way to make him learn. The youth are
probably the most active. That is in part because at this stage in ones development one is more
open to change, more open to learn new things and more open to experiment. Adults have a
lesson to learn from the youth. One might get old physically but if the heart is young then the
body will follow and try to keep pace with it. So what can keep the old, young at heart? The
oldies should engage in new activities. Going for a walk day after day could get really boring.
One would see the same faces and the same surroundings. Instead one could go swimming, or
join a yoga class, maybe. Many oldies who have joined dance classes have found that they have
brought back the missing zing in their lives. Learning a new activity is not just fun it gives you
the opportunity to make new friends.

Just like a spice could ruin food if it is used in excess similarly variety could ruin our lives if we
started applying it indiscriminately. Imagine a scenario where parents decide that they are fed
up with each other and want to try new partners. Although this might sound interesting and
exciting to them, it would be morally unethical and would damage the fabric of their family’s
existence. However, that does not mean that they must lead a lackluster life. They could
introduce variety by making some changes. Instead of eating dinner every day, day after day
with the family they could opt once in a way to go out for a candlelight dinner. Instead of
watching a movie with the family every Sunday they could go out for a small excursion.
Introducing variety in one’s life does not have to be expensive. You just have to put your mind to
it. As a family if you put your heads together you will be amazed at the suggestions your kids
could come up with to make your weekends exciting. When one leads an exciting life there will
be no room for either depression or boredom. You will wake up each morning looking forward
to a different day. So live life to the fullest. Experiment and innovate and you will find that
variety can really spice up your life.
