“Can a P 20 investment on ice candy turn you into a millionaire?”

●This video is about a wife named Rosielle De Leon and husband named Rodolfo De Leon who
lives in Antipolo City together with their two children. This couple is not rich and don’t have any
experience regarding business. They are just a young couple living in a small house and only the
husband who is working to provide for his family. Until one day, the company that Rodolfo is
working from decided to fire him. They got frustrated and having a hard time to look for another
job since they are both undergraduate. Because of financial problem they decided to move their
children to public school since they cannot afford anymore to pay for their tuition fee. They
decided to sell their home appliances in order to provide their daily need and only their
refrigerator was left together with their 20 pesos budget. Rosielle decided to buy a plastic for the
ice water that she is planning to sell in their neighbourhood. With their 20 pesos budget they
produced 100 ice waters in total and they sell it for 3 pesos which is equivalent of 300 pesos.
This is where she decided to buy ingredients for ice candy with three flavours and sell it to their
neighbourhood. They started their business in 2011 with P 15, 000 total amount of income a
month and in 2015 they are now earning P 450,000 a month.

The relation of this video to what we discussed which are Implications of ethical traditions
for business and Filipino Value system in business ethics challenges.
● Mr. and Mrs. De Leon’s life is not easy especially at the young age they have two children
already. Here in the Philippines applying for a job is hard especially if you don’t have a college
diploma and don’t have enough experience. But because of the love they have for their children,
they managed to overcome this obstacle. They used their two children as an inspiration for them
to don’t give up since we Filipino’s are very family centered nation. They know that as a parent
they have rights and duties to their children and one of it is to provide their needs and education.
With the influence of Chinese culture they also believed in luck. Of course they got rejected so
many times but because of the influence of Chinese people when it comes of running a business,
no matter how many rejections you received, luck will be with you at the right time if you will
keep on moving forward. They used their value as a Filipino that putting up a business will not
be successful in just one click or overnight it requires virtue and ethics that serves as your strong
foundation to stand. They prioritized their moral obligations as a parent or also known as
deontology. Because of their Virtue Ethics as parent the business that they have is still
flourishing and improving. Because of the strong bond of their family it improves their virtue
ethics which helps their business becomes successful and relevant no matter how many
competitors they have right now.
How are you going to apply this to our business in online selling?
●Since our business will be done through online selling, I learned something from them. That in
order to make your business successful, you must be creative and stay relevant as much as
possible. Mr. and Mrs. De Leon’s business strategy to make their ice candy business stay
relevant, every week they release new flavour to make their customer be excited and look
forward for more. I and my team need to come up with a strategy like that. We need to come up
with an answer for “what makes your product different?” since we are not the only one who’s
doing online thrift shop. We must differentiate our products. If Mr. and Mrs. De Leon
differentiated their products by producing new variety of flavours every week, I and my team
will come up with unique packaging and attractive advertisement every week since we know for
a fact that the product we are selling is similar to other online shop. But what makes our product
really different and the best is each one of us has this virtue and ethics as an individual which are
beneficial for our business. We make sure that every single product in our shop is accurate and in
good condition. That our business is morally good and we value our customers like how we
valued our family. We want to earn and at the same time we want to share the experience we had
with these pre-loved items to the new owner of it. And leave a nice impression to them by
making our packaging iconic for them to remember that even though this is just a temporary
business, the product that they purchased from us will stay forever with them even though the
shop is already gone. The value of our products will depreciate when it comes to price but the
memories, it will stay forever with you.
