This tutorial is about using images of people that you find online and
placing them into your model. Normally, when you download 3D people, Last blog posts
they look anything but realistic. This approach will help you populate you
render with little work. Create realistic shadows and reflections in the
process. We will be using opacity maps, and standard materials.
1) Find Person
Online, find an image of a person that looks like he or she will fit
into your scene.
Once you find the appropriate image, download and save in a place
that is easy to find.
Here are a few things to look for:
Backgrounds: People in front of cleaner backgrounds will be
easier to cut out and clean up. If you are lucky enough to find
people in front of solid color background, they will be the
easiest.
Lighting: Try to find someone in the correct lighting. For
example, if you are doing a night render, but you choose a
person that was originally outside during high noon, he or she
will look very weird.
Angle: Try not to choose a person that is bending, sitting and
leaning at weird angles. They are extremely hard to place.
Feet: Notice that in most pictures of people, their feet do not
line up. Generally one foot in much high then another or place
farther back in the image. These are no good because you
person will end up looking like he or she has one very short
leg. Sometimes this can be fixed or cheated but sometimes it
is a lost cause.
2) Clean Up Your Image
Open your found image in Photoshop.
Crop your image to make feet standing directly in top of the bottom
of the image.
If needed, stretch down the higher foot to make them both even on
ground. There are a variety of different ways to do this. I suggest
one of two ways. Either select the foot, hit control + J and then
drag down new layer. The other option is to clone stamp.
Save this image as a jpeg but do not close.

3) Create an Opacity Map
In order to create an opacity map, we need to create a black and
white version of this image. Black = transparent and white =
opaque. Therefore, we want the person to be white, and everything
in the background to be black.
Select everything in the background and paint in black. Don't forget
to get the little spaces like between arms and torso.
The invert you selection and paint your person white.
Now save this image and name it appropriately as to not confuse it
with the full color image.
4) Create Surface
Back in Rhino, create a surface that roughly matches the
proportions of you image. In other words, if you are working with a
tall skinny image, a short fat surface will not be ideal.
5) Create Material, Part One
Go to VRay materials editor.
Right click on 'Scene Material' to create new 'Standard' material.

Materials.
Rename appropriately.
Right click on material name to create new 'VRayBRDF' material.
Right click on material name and delete 'Diffuse' layer.
Click on the "m" in the diffuse section.
Select "none" and change it to "TexBitmap"
Select full color image.
6) Add Material To Surface
Highlight the surface.
Right click the material name and select "apply material to
selection"
Render the scene. We want to make sure that the image is rotated
correctly.
7) Rotate Image (Only If Needed)
To rotate the image, go back to the material. click on the now
uppercase "M" in the diffuse section.
Scroll down to the bottom.
In the UVW section, change the rotation degree to the appropriate
number. In this case 90 (degrees).

8) Create Material, Part Two
Now we need to add the opacity map.
In the Maps section, click on the opacity "m".
Select "none" and change it to "TexBitmap"
Select the black and white version of the image.
Remember to scroll down to bottom and rotate this image the same
amount of degrees that you did with the other image.
Render the scene.
Make sure that your image is in the correct proportion and at the
correct angle.
If you are seeing a slight ring around you person, that it called "the
Halo Problem".
9) Fixing the Halo Problem (Only If Needed)
If you are experiencing the Halo Problem, don't worry. There is a
simple reason and a fairly simple solution. This means that the
white background has become part of the opaque layer. In other
words, in the opacity map image, the white pixels are not only
replacing the person, but are also replacing a tiny strip of the
background image as well.
Reopen your black and white image in Photoshop.
Select the black background. Make sure to get all of it.
Go to Select.
Choose Modify.
Select Expand.
At first, choose a small amount of pixels and then slowly repeat and
bump up the number as needed.
Save
Back in VRay, replace the opacity map with this new one. Do this
by clicking the opacity "M" and reloading the file name.
Render the scene.
