With rise of globalization and increasing sharing of ideals and issues in the world through

platforms such as social media, it has actively facilitated the rise of sensitivity to workplace
employees with regards to employee motivation. Businesses around the world are increasingly
giving importance to employees going against the underlying notion of customer service being
the top priority which increased in the late 2000s, however now, new case study have arisen
giving light to the importance of employee motivation in a workplace and the number of ways
businesses. These policies can usually be applied by huge multinational companies due to their
expensive and risk bearing nature.

Countries such as China and the United States of America have always been at the forefront of
adapting to new structural changes and policies in businesses due to them having huge
competitive industries. This new wave can first be seen affecting the USA when paid paternity
leave was made compulsory for businesses to give to women and their judicial system made sure
that businesses were actively held accountable when it comes to enforcing this policy.
Businesses well known for having such good environments for employees acted as reasons for
employees to join these firms and ensured employees have job satisfaction and hence work
efficiently.

Due to this increasing sensitivity and increasing importance of employee motivation a new
policy has been introduced in some firms of giving father paid maternity leaves as well when
they have a new born child. Businesses adopting this policy found a range of benefits coming
from this new policy. Firms experienced an indirect benefit which was that when fathers are able
to take time of in order to priorities their families and engage in bonding activities, social welfare
significantly increases and the child’s upbringing also contributes to society. Fathers engaging in
this sort of balancing lifestyle contribute more in the workplace due to increased personal
satisfaction and motivation. This mitigates the occurrence of situations where fathers have to
choose work over family or vice versa. Fathers helping out in household activities make a more
equal distribution of house work or chores between the members of the house and challenges the
norm of the male being the sole breadwinner in the house. Furthermore, fathers who are able to
give more time at home are also enabling the mother to go and get employed giving a positive
effect on gender equality in the workplace and lowering gender wage gaps.

However there are also a number of disadvantages to these policies, quite similar to the ones
faced by women when they take paternity leave. When a guy who took a paternity leave called
‘Goulet’, took a leave and returned he was treated in a very different then the way it used to be
before as before he used to get significant raises and bonuses but now his boss simply told him
there is gauge on which he may judge his performance and give him a raise. Apart from this
there is also a social impact which is specific only to father paternity leaves which is that the
subject taking the leave will be undermined and be thought of as someone who doesn’t “wear the
pants in the family”, which may affect the individual and make him choose not to take the leave
due to social pressures like these.
In conclusion, males taking paternity leaves provides a spectrum of advantages to the individual
who takes the leave and the society in the long run but gives lesser benefit to the business but
may give a positive effect to the business in the long run as well as when a image is made that a
business’s respect employees and give fathers paid maternity leaves then consumers might prefer
to buy from that specific business. Hence, this policy serves to benefit both ends of the
employer-employee standoff and deserves widespread implementation rather than not being used
at all.
