The Challenge
In 1994, Solvay Fluor was the first company world-wide to stop their
production and sales of CFC’s. New refrigerants with higher efficiency and
environmentally friendly properties had to be developed and implemented
using a safe stewardship system right through to final recycling.
Solvay’s fluorine business has grown at a fast pace over recent years,
having doubled its size from 1995 until 2002, and more than doubling
that again since then. The refrigerant business has also grown during that
time, in such a way that Solvay Fluor can be considered today as one of
the leading manufacturers of fluorinated refrigerants worldwide.

Choosing the right refrigerant and the right supplier goes far beyond
evaluating physical and environmental properties and specifications.
Refrigerants are “system components” and performance evaluation
must be directed at the system rather than its components – with
respect to:
Safety
■ All Solkane® HFC refrigerants achieve the highest safety class in all globally
accepted standards for refrigerant and refrigeration safety.
■ They are non-flammable and very low in toxicity.
■ Because of their safety properties, Solkane® refrigerants have the least
restrictions with respect to installation sites and charge sizes.
Ecology Hydrogen
■ Environmental performance of refrigeration Oxygen

Economy
Using Solkane® refrigerants will save life cycle costs in various ways.
■ High energy efficiency ensures low operating costs.
■ The high safety class saves substantially in respect to installation
sites and safety related system auxiliaries.
■ Excellent material compatibility allows system designs with
conventional and cost effective construction materials.
The Conclusion
When reflecting interactions of safety,
economical and environmental issues,
Solkane® refrigerants impressively dem-
onstrate their superiority. With their
non-ozone depleting properties, com-
bined with complete recycling, Solkane®
refrigerants contribute to Solvay Fluor’s
responsible care program.
