LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 1

Random Variables and Probability Distribution
I. Introductory Concept
In your previous study in mathematics, you have learned that experiment is any activity,
which can be done repeatedly under the similar condition. And the set of all possible outcomes
of an experiment is called sample space. You have also learned how to systematically list the
possible outcomes of a given experiment.
In this lesson, you will learn about variables that are associated with probabilities called
random variables.
Do you still remember me?
List the sample space of the following experiments.
EXPERIMENT SAMPLE SPACE
1. Tossing two coins
2. A pair of dice rolled
3. A drawing a spade from a deck of cards

Variable is a characteristics or attribute that can assume different values.

MATHEMATICAL
A random variable CONCEPTS
is a variable whose value is a numerical outcome of a
random phenomenon.
 A random variable is denoted with a capital letter
 The probability distribution of a random variable x tells what the
possible values of X and how probabilities to those values.
 A random variable can be discrete or continuous

3
Steps on how to determine the random variables on any events or
experiments.
1. Determine the sample space. Assign letters that will represents each
outcome.
2. Count the number of the value of the random variable (Capital Letter
assiged)

Example:
Tossing Three Coins
Suppose three coins are tossed. Let Y be the random variable representing the number of tails
that occur. Find the values of the random variable Y. Complete the table below.
Steps Solution
1. Determine the sample
space. Let H represent head The sample space for this experiment is:
and T represent tail. S = { TTT,TTH,THT,HTT, HHT, HTH, THH, HHH}

2. Count the number of tails Number of the

in each outcome in the Possible Outcome Random Variable Y
sample space and assign this (Number of Tails)
number to this outcome.
TTT 3
TTH 2
THT 2
HTT 2
HHT 1
HTH 1
THH 1
HHH 0
T

So, the possible values of random variable Y are 0,1,2 & 3

A random variable is a discrete random variable if its set of possible outcomes is

countable.It represent count data.
Example: 1. Number of heads in three tosses of a fair coin.
2. The number of Grade 11 students of Amador-Bello High
School who passed National Achievement Test.
3. The number of Senior High School Teacher in Amador-
Bello High School.
A random Variable is a continuous random variable if it takes a values on a continuous
scale. Often, continuous random variables represent measured data.
4
Example: 1. Weight of the person
2. Height of the person
3. Percentage of the Grade 11 students of ABHS who passed
II. Learning Skills from the MELCs
At the end of the learning activity sheets, you are expected to:
1. illustrate random variables
2. Distinguishes between a discrete and continuous random variables.and W
3. finds the possible values of a random variables

III. Activities
Activity 1: How Can you solve it?
A.Suppose there are three people to be tested in Covid-19 in Masbate. Let P represent positive,
N, represent negative and W be the random variable representing the number of infected person
that occur. Find the random variable W.
Possible Outcomes Value of the Random Variable Z

B. The winners will be drawn from 5 SHS teachers (S) and 7 JHS teachers (J). Let Z the random
variables representing the JHS teachers. Find the values of the random variable Z.
Possible Outcomes Value of the Random Variable Z

5
Activity 2: Can you classify me?
Directions: Classify the following random variables as discrete or continuous.

Random Variables Classification

1. The number of votes for the ABHS HRPTA
President.
2. The height of SHS teacher of AMADOR-
Bello High School.
3. The number of deaths in the Philippines for
one year attributed to COVID 19.
4. The number of dropouts in ABHS for a
period of 5 years.
5. The amount of paint utilized in a classroom
building project of ABHS.
