In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful

Transliteration

[031:006 Wamina (and of) alnnasi (mankind) man (is he who) yashtaree (purchases)
lahwa (idle) alhadeethi (talks) liyudilla (mislead) AAan (from) sabeeli (the path) Allahi
(of Allah) bighayri (without) AAilmin (knowledge) wayattakhithaha (and takes it)
huzuwan (by way of mockery) ola-ika (such) lahum (for them) AAathabun (will be
torment) muheenun (a humiliating)] Surah Luqman

[031:007 Wa-itha (and when) tutla (are recited) AAalayhi (to such one) ayatuna (Our
Verses) walla (he turns away) mustakbiran (in prid) kaan (as if) lam (not) yasmaAAha
(he heard them) kaanna (as if) fee (in) othunayhi (his ears) waqran (deafness)
fabashshirhu (so announce to him) biAAathabin (a torment) aleemin (painful)]

[031:006 And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks to mislead men from the path of
Allah without knowledge, and takes it the path of Allah, or the Verses of the Quran by
way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment in the Hell fire]

[031:007 And when Our Verses of the Quran are recited to such a once, he turns away in
pride,…]

Exegesis
Today we are going to discuss the sixth and seventh holy verse of surah Luqman. This
verse sheds light on the entity that there are some people in the world who intend to
purchase absurd and indecent affairs of life. Vulgar conversation etc. They purchase so
that they may liyudilla (mislead) AAan (from) sabeeli (the path) Allahi (of Allah).
Their main aim is to mislead others from the path of Allah. And wayattakhithaha (and
takes it) huzuwan (by way of mockery). And such people who purchase vulgar
conversations they do it with the niyyah to mock others. And for such people there are
torments of hell ola-ika (such) lahum (for them) AAathabun (will be torment)
muheenun (a humiliating). And naturally for them from Allah there is humiliating
torment in hell.
And their condition is this, Allah says, Wa-itha (and when) tutla (are recited) AAalayhi
(to such one), they turn their face with pride. Their hearts are sealed. And they pose in
such a way as if they did not hear the holy verse - walla (he turns away) mustakbiran (in
prid) kaan (as if) lam (not) yasmaAAha (he heard them). They give the impression
kaanna (as if) fee (in) othunayhi (his ears) waqran (deafness). Such people never give
attention to the words of Allah and they ever pose as if they really did not hear anything
of Allah. Certainly they would dwell in hell forever and Allah has prepared very
tormented punishment for them. fabashshirhu (so announce to him) biAAathabin (a
torment) aleemin (painful) – Allah asked His prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) to
announce that there are torments of punishment for them in hell.
This holy verse is attracting moumineen that they be warned so that did not do the evils.
And if they did it then they would be out of the circle of being moumineen. The enemies
of truthfulness never understand what is true and what is false. This is the character of
them. So moumineen should be aware of them. It is said there used to be a man by the
name of Nazer Ibnul Haris, he noticed that when Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) recited the holy verses, during the time of the recitations, there were many
incidents of Arab. Hazrat Ibrahim does not belong to Arab, he is non-Arab. Before
proceeding ahead I would like to let you know that the holy Quran is not past. It is
present and would go to the future. This is miracle of the holy Quran. Quran would lead
and teach us till the last moment of the fall of this high-energy universe. Further holy
Quran also tells us stories that what had happened whom and why. Holy Quran tells
about the torments so that others may avoid doing evil activities.
So when holy Quran revealed non-believers used to hear its verses keenly and attentively.
The chieftains of jahilya became united not to let the Quran get success. Nazer Ibnul

Haris used to go to Iran for business. On his return he would come with stories. Such
kind of attitude Allah does not like to let others know about the false and baseless stories.
And in order to make the stories more interesting they add more spices in them. This is
false spice, which is not liked by Allah. That’s why it has been mentioned in the Quran,
that absurd talks may give you no fruit. So such people like Nazer Ibnul Haris mislead
and misguide others and make them away from the holy Quran. So it is their purpose to
mislead and misguide others. Such people used to purchase stories and they would hunt
juicy matters to narrate to people.
They used to present their vulgar matter in an attracting way. They were possessing with
the gift of gab. Their added matter used to describe the contour of the human body in a
very attractive way. And they also would add vulgar phrases and obscene matter in it.
This kind of literature is called Mughanniyya. There used to be a Persian man his name
was Abul Araish Isfahani. He wrote a book consisting of 28 volumes. The name of his
book is Al-Aghani. Al-Aghani is the plural of Mughanniyaa. It means female singers.
This book created an intrigue among Muslims. It is written in 26th volume that that Bibi
Sakina is alive. She is not dead. That black tongued mentioned Bibi Sakina’s name in
his book in a blasphemous way. We don’t want to pollute this page that what he
mentioned more about whom. Anyway we should research and go into the depth of the
matter what we read especially in the name of Din-e-Islam. So such matters were just
added in polluted books in order to detract the Muslims from their traditional glorious
way of Din and Hussain.
By that time singer women used to be bought, and they were kept in a bazaar – Ukaaz.
Before Islam it was a common practice that in the condition by which the dances used to
be watched, in the very same condition also tawaaf (seven-fold circumambulation of
Kabah) would be done. Many chieftains of Quresh used to come over there and they
would express the power of their wealth and etc. These affairs were intentionally
maneuvered so that people may not come to holy Quran. Then by that time this verse
was revealed on Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Wamina (and of) alnnasi
(mankind) man (is he who) yashtaree (purchases) lahwa (idle) alhadeethi (talks).
There are people who purchase evil conversations. Lahw’s literal meaning is to keep
away somebody from his rightfulness. It means to keep away people from the verses of
the holy Quran. They buy lahwa (idle) alhadeethi (talks) which keep people turned away
from rightfulness. Imam Jaffer Saddique (AS) explains that lahw means ghinaa.
Anyway in such kind of condition there used to be some people who would listen to the
holy Quran but on the contrary, there used to be some others who would not hear and did
not let others hear. And for the later type of people Allah fixed big torments for them.
So we got the practical lesson that what other type of matter may come before Allah’s
Quran that is all baseless, absurd, ludicrous, preposterous, silly etc. So it is lahw.
So the people who do these types of silly activities Allah gives them time to do more up
to the extent they can. This is the Law of Lenity. Allah loosens the rope of shaitan. This
is the modus operandi of Allah. Perpetual is the voice of Quran. Here it is mentioned for
your complacence Inshallah these would go down to dust if the endeavors of moumineen

are in action against them. It is because these obscene and vulgar affairs have no deep
roots. The teachings on which we are going are deep rooted and perpetual entirely
enriched by the holy Quran.
Masoom explained lahwa (idle) alhadeethi (talks) – that – ghinaa Every that thing which
may stop you giving your attention towards Allah, that belongs to ghinaa. There might
be many things. Some are related to music and musicology, and there are some poetical
verses. And the prose diction or the poetical verses, which are obscene, are also called
ghinaa. These kinds of things not only ruin one’s family life but also it ruins the
hereafter life. We get the wrath of our family members and also get the wrath of Allah.
There is one more entity in the very same regard. It is called Al-Sautul Murajja. Such a
voice which may attract you but towards vulgarity. It is also a kind of ghinaa, be it come
out of some kind of musical instrument or from human vocal chords. So it is
recommended that elegy (mersia) should not be sung in a song tuneful manner. If any
elegiac poem were sung in such a way would be considered haram. It only should be
read in a rhyming pattern only. Ghinaa is haram, be it in any form. It spoils the manners
of ethics. Mind becomes polluted. Soul becomes soil. Especially music derails the life
of mind that it forgets what is Haq and virtuous. We all should avoid it please. Seventh
Imam (AS) was passing from some place in Baghdad. So there he came to know that
there was one king of small portion of geography and he was a king of a kaneez (a female
servant). He was very consistent about Kaneez and he would direct her oftenly not to
come late home etc. And when Maula was passing from there, the same kaneez was
standing over there. That Kaneez was throwing the leftovers of food. Maula said to her
something regarding her act. But she said that she could not stay longer that her master
would punish her, and she feared him. On it Maula said that she should have feared
Allah only. Anyway when that woman arrived home late, she was asked about to come
late home. She told him the entire incident what took place with her. Also she told him
that Maula asked her was there any other master of your master or not? On it he asked
her more about the whereabouts of Maula. He got a sound impression on him and then
he left the entire music and songs and dances etc. He left all ghinaa. And after it he did
the penance (tauba). He also said that: advice was from Imam Musa-e-Kazim (AS). I
would like to add something for your intellect that Imam did not do that kind of preaching
as others have the impression in their minds. Just only his one sentence was conveyed in
the form of the message. And just imagine the impact of the sentence of Maula, he not
only admitted his fault but also came on the line of Islam. Why is it? It is because when
the character of a person becomes sound then it does not need any power of some kind to
explain. Only messages are sufficient to bring others on line of Islam. Now we got logic
that the people who say that Islam spread through power and strength, it is sheerly wrong.
Islam spread through the character of the holy family – Ahlul Bayt. And still today it is
by virtue of them. Who can negate this fact?
And the people who are in the state of ghinaa they would be asked on the Day of
Judgment that what taste of purity they got? For them there are torments in hell. Our all
faculties would be asked how and where did they utilize their characteristics?
