Grammar: Wishes and Regrets

A wish: A desire, something that you want to do/be.


A regret: A wish about something in the past. To be sorry about something.

Change:
Tense (present-past; past-past perfect).
Negative-affirmative; affirmative - negative.

For wishes in the present: Past Simple Tense


IF ONLY… I wasn’t hungry.
I WISH… I could concentrate on the class.
For regrets (about the past): Past Perfect Simple Tense
IF ONLY… I had learnt to swim when I was a child.

Work in pairs. Write the structure used in each one.

Wishes come from real situations. You have to switch:


Negative – Affirmative
Affirmative – Negative
Back switch the tense accordingly.

Examples:
I have to work on Sunday. -> I wish I DIDN’T HAVE TO work on Sunday.
I didn’t do much sport when I was a child. -> If only I HAD DONE more sport when I was a child.

3 Complete these regrets. Use a suitable verb.
