Objective

The objective of this practical is gain knowledge on aircraft lighting system. From this
practical we will also learn to read and interpret the aircraft maintenance manual and
circuit diagram.

Tool and equipment

1. Socket set.
2. Ratchet set
3. Millimeter
4. Torch light
5. Flat & Philip screw driver
6. Cessna 310 wiring diagram
7. Multi meter

System operation

1. Landing & taxi lighting system:

This system operates using 28 VDC, taken from the bus bar. From the bus it goes
through the circuit breakers (C/B) which are consisting of 5amp for control system
15amp lighting. Taxi light shares the same circuit breaker with the right landing light
control system. When taxi light switch put in close position the current will flows
from the bus through the C/B to the switch and lastly to the taxi light and ground;
automatically close the right hand side landing light. To operate the landing light, the
landing light switches select down to open both sides left and right. Ones the switch
is select down the circuit close the current will flow. The landing light will open via
mechanically motor powered and light will illuminate automatically via micro switch
inside the landing light assembly. The light has no switch to control off n on because
it is directly power from the bus through the 15amp C/B.

2. Interior lighting system:

Same as landing light and taxi lighting system, this system also used 28 VDC. It
takes the power from the non essential bus. In this system there are consist of two
different circuits which are rear dome/ ultraviolet instrument light and front dome/
instrument flood light. Both of these circuits using 5amp C/B. For the rear dome/
ultraviolet instrument light there are 2 switches separately. To illuminate both light
the switch should be select up to close the circuit. There are uv dimming light; used
to control the intensity of the instrument light. Same goes to the other circuit front
dome/ instrument flood light. It also have instrument flood light rheostat to control
the light intensity without any switch. There are two switches which are front dome
switch and baggage light switch. The switches should be select up to close the circuit
to illuminate the light.

Result:
1. The landing light and taxi lighting found fail to illuminate due to no continuity
(open circuit) at the taxi light circuit and landing light circuit.
2. The interior lighting fail to illuminate due to open circuit at the C/B and the
rheostat.

Safety precaution

1. Always use and refer to appropriate / approve aircraft manual.

2. Use correct tool and equipment to perform the task.
3. Always read the warning and caution sign before performing any task.
4. Make sure the aircraft power system is off before checking all wiring.

Conclusion

At the end of this practical we were able to understand aircraft maintenance manual,
able to read and understand the wiring diagram, and learn how to troubleshoot by using a
correct method of doing so. At the same time we had gain knowledge on the aircraft
lighting system and able to visualize the system clearly.
