PART B – (5 x 13 = 65 marks)
11. a.i) The pressure difference ∆p in a pipe of diameter D and length L due to (13) CO3 K5
viscous flow depends on the velocity V, viscosity µ and density ρ. using
Buckingham π theorem, obtain an expression for ∆p.
(OR)

b.i) In a 1 in 30 model of a spillway the velocity and discharge are 1.5m/s and (13) CO2 K4
2m3/s. Investigate the corresponding velocity and discharge in the
prototype.

12. a.i) Derive Darcy Weisbach equation for flow through a circular pipe. (13) CO3 K5
(OR)

b.i) A pipe of diameter 20cm and length 2000m connects two reservoirs, (13) CO5 K4
having difference of water levels as 20m. Determine the discharge through
the pipe,if an additional pipe of diameter 20cm and length 1200m is
attached to the last 1200m length of the existing pipe, and also examine the
increase in the discharge. Take f=0.015 and neglect minor losses.

13. a.i) Generate an expression for shear stress and velocity distribution for (13) CO5 K5
viscous flow through a circular pipe.
(OR)

b.i) Determine the displacement thickness and momentum thickness for the (13) CO5 K6
velocity distribution in the boundary layer given by u/U = y/δ, where u is
the velocity at a distance y from the plate and u = U at y = δ where δ is the
boundary layer thickness.

14. a.i) Assess in detail the separation of Boundary Layer and the effect of (13) CO5 K6
Pressure on it.
(OR)

b.i) Justify the ratio of maximum velocity to average velocity in a circular pipe (13) CO6 K6
for viscous flow is equal to 2 and also derive equation for velocity
distribution.

15. a.i) Explain in detail and derive displacement, momentum and energy (13) CO6 K5
thickness for a laminar boundary layer.

(OR)

b.i) A ship is 300 m long moves in sea water, whose density is 1030 kg/m 3. A (13) CO5 K4
1:100 model of this to be tested in a wind tunnel. The velocity of air in the
wind tunnel around the model is 30 m/s and the resistance of the model is
60N. Determine the velocity of ship in sea water and also the resistance of
the ship in sea water. The density of air is given as 1.24 kg/m 3. Take the
Kinematic viscosity of sea water and air as 0.012 stokes and 0.018 stokes
respectively

PART C – (1 x 15 = 15 marks)
16. a.i) State and formulate in detail about Buckingham π theorem. (13) CO3 K6
(OR)

b.i) Discuss in detail about Reynold’s Number, Froude’s Number, Euler’s (13) CO4 K4
