HydroFORM Phased Array Corrosion Mapping System

Part 1 – Equipment Overview

HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System - Equipment
 The HydroFORM Phased Array System is designed to perform internal and external corrosion\erosion
mapping on piping by use of a semi-automated encoder scanner without the use of high speed
mechanical raster scanners or computer based software beyond the Omniscan MXU.
 The HydroFORM corrosion mapping system consists of the following components:
 Omniscan MXU 16:128 Phased Array Instrument.
 Omniscan MXU Software Version 2.0R21 or later
 Olympus HydroFORM scanner Scanner (Olympus P/N: Hydroform-K-Manual)
 Olympus 2-Axis CHAIN Scanner for Piping (Olympus P/N: Chainscan-XY38)
 HydroFORM Adaptation Kit for use with CHAIN Scanner (Olympus P/N: Hydroform-A-ADPchain)
 7.5L64-I4-P-7.5-OM Phased Array Probe (Custom 1mm pitch X 64 elements, 7.5MHz )
 Consumable Foam Seals for Water Column
 Water supply

2
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – Omniscan MXU
 The HydroFORM Phased Array System is designed to be used with the Omniscan MXU
instrument and latest standard MXU software.
 No specialized software package is required. Corrosion mapping, weld inspection, or other
applications can be performed using the standard software package.
 Although extremely beneficial for specialized inspections such as HIC detection\sizing, angle
beam weld root corrosion, microbiological (MIC) attack, pitting, etc., the Multi-group option
for the Omniscan MXU is not required for standard zero degree single group corrosion
mapping.
 160 megabyte and 300 megabyte file saving
options (160 standard)
 Up to 6 hours acquisition time with two internal
batteries

**** Although the HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping

system is not inherently incompatible with the
Omniscan-M platform, due to the limited data
storage, one axis encoder limitation, and
reduced analysis capabilities it is not supported
in the training and NPI documentation.

3
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – Omniscan MXU Software
 The HydroFORM Phased Array System is designed to be used with the Omniscan MXU
instrument and latest standard MXU software.

 Corrosion mapping, weld

inspection, or other
applications can be
performed using the
standard software
package.
 Omniscan MXU software
version 2.0R20 or later can
be downloaded from the
support section of the
ONDT webpage at
http://www.olympus-
ims.com/en/service-and-
support/downloads/

Although extremely beneficial for specialized inspections such as HIC detection\sizing, angle
beam weld root corrosion, microbiological (MIC) attack, pitting, etc., the Multi-group option for
the Omniscan MXU is not required for standard zero degree single group corrosion mapping.
4
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – Omniscan MXU Software
 Changes to the Omniscan MXU software in version 2.0R20 and later related
to the HydroFORM system include:

 C-scan compression to
ensure no data points or
relevant readings are
missed when the
number of data points in
the data file exceed the
display pixels available
in the C-scan display.
 Corrosion specific
Readings such as
thickness and position
for the entire C-scan
and within the cursor
zone.
 Color palette range and
thickness range
behavior.

5
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – HydroFORM HD MAPPER
 The HydroFORM can be attached to semi-automated, full mechanized
scanners, or used independently for manual encoded one line scans.
 The scanner concept creates a local immersion technique by securing the PA
probe and enables conforming to rough and uneven surfaces while
maintaining a constant water column.
 Low water requirements and Integrated water ports
 Easy synchronization on front wall echo for OD and ID corrosion monitoring.
 Minimum tools required for use.
 Wedge reflection is minimized.
 Adjustable water column height.
 Magnetic and non-magnetic wheels.
 Self centering probe position.
 Integrated wheel encoder.
 Industrial design for harsh environments

6
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – HydroFORM Manual
 When used in the manual configuration without a scanner, the integrated
encoder provides one line scans of approximately 60mm wide X 1mm
resolution depending on aperture used.
 No additional scanner required for manual encoded one-line scans.
 Supplied with magnetic wheels for maximum stability.
 Quick radius adjustment allows inspection of pipe diameters without changing
hardware or wedge. (Patent pending)
 Surfaces
 Convex: 4 in. OD to Flat
 Concave : 10 in. ID to Flat

7
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – HydroFORM Semi-Auto
 When used with the CHAIN Scanner, provides one line scans of
approximately 60mm wide X 1mm resolution depending on aperture used.
 Can acquire up to five complete lines of data (60mm X 5 revolutions = C-scan
of 300mm X pipe diameter) without resetting the CHAIN Scanner position.
 CHAIN Scanner can be quickly repositioned while maintaining precision
position for additional coverage.
 Data files can be merged together for C-scans larger than 300 megabytes
(Requires Tomoview).
 Can be configured with magnetic or non-magnetic wheels. Both included in
HydroFORM-K-ADPchain package.
 Quick radius adjustment allows inspection of pipe diameters without changing
hardware or wedge. (Patent pending)
 Surfaces
 Convex: 4 to 38 in. OD
 Flat

8
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – HydroFORM Adapt Kit
 The adaptation kit contains all the required hardware to adapt the
HydroFORM to a standard Olympus CHAIN Scanner (Olympus P/N:
Chainscan-XY38)
 Crank handle for faster indexing
 Encoder junction with Lemo connector for quick change between the Mini-Wheel and CHAIN
Scanner signal
 Reversed spring loaded arm for HydroFORM scanner attachment
 Four plastic wheels
 Parts to allow the CHAIN Scanner to inspect Flat surfaces

9
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – 7.5L64 Phased Array Probe

 1mm pitch X 64 element linear

array.
 7.5 MHz frequency for
optimized near surface
resolution.
 Custom housing design for
HydroFORM scanner.
 60mm wide acquisitions based
on four elements aperture.
 Optimized acoustics for
corrosion mapping applications.
 Up to 1 mm near surface
resolution under optimum
conditions.

10
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – Consumable Foam Seal

 Foam seal to maintain water

column and conform to irregular
surfaces.
 Consumable material to be
replaced periodically.
 Will deteriorate differently based
on pipe surface condition.
 Can be replaced in less than 5
minutes.
 Tough durable Teflon surface for
extended life.
 The HydroFORM system initially
comes with 100 replaceable
seals.
 Additional seals available with
short delivery time.

11
HydroFORM Corrosion Mapping System – Water Supply System
The HydroFORM HD MAPPER requires a constant water supply to maintain the
water column in the chamber. Different pressure is required to initially fill the
chamber and clear the bubbles, and to maintain a constant water column
during scanning.

 Electric Water Pump (CFU03)

 Requires 110-220VAC power source.
 Supplies constant controllable water pressure for
optimum scanning speeds and production.
 Removes the skill and time out of maintaining constant
water column for easier use and faster production
scanning.

 Manual Water Pump (WTR-Sprayer-8L)

 No power required
 8 liters reservoir
 Manual water pump will reduce production and data
quality depending on surface condition of component.
 Not recommended where a power source is available
for electric water pump
 Not capable of maintaining constant consistent
pressure for fast acquisition.
