1. Hamd and Na’t

All praises are due to Allah who has created us and arranged rewards and punishments
for us to be meted out on the basis of our performances on this earth. Peace and blessings
be upon the last and the final Prophet Muhammad (saas) who showed us the right way
and informed us about the actual status of the life in the Hereafter through a graphic
discussion of it.

2. Introduction and Address to the Young:

Dear brothers and sisters! This is a rare opportunity for me to speak in front of the future
leader of the nation and the Ummah. Who knows that there is perhaps a Umar who upon
becoming Muslim declared to propagate Islam amidst the vehement opposition of the
aristocrats of the society and did not take rest until Islam was ultimately established and
became the sole super power of the world, or anyone like Tareq bin Jabal who crossed
the Mediterranean to save an innocent woman’s life from the hands of the oppressor
Roderick, or like Muhammad bin Qasim, a young of 16/17 years who destroyed the
arrogance of pagan Indian and ultimately raise and hoist the flag of Islam
here in the sub-continent.
Dear friends! This is the real time in our life to wake up and do the needful for Islam and
for the Ummah and in this way ensure our salvation in this life and the Hereafter. This is
the greatest season in our life and this is why we will be asked for this period of life the
most. Listen to the Hadith of the Prophet about the best utilization and maximum
exploitation of this season:

Dear friends! Look at the lives of the Prophet, including the Prophet of Islam, they were
assisted by the younger generations and opposed by the older section of people. We are to
rise us to become like the lions of our beloved pious predecessors.
This will happen when we will have the proper understanding of Islam and fear of
standing in front of Allah in Ākhirah. Look at Hazrat Umar again and see that only the
fear of accountability in Ākhirah made him one of the best of all
times...............................Otherwise we will only enlarge the number of the Ummar and
will eventually come to naught for the Ummah’s recovery from this ignominious
situation. There is a line of a poem of our beloved poet:

The Prophet indicated to this situation when he said:

3. Obligation of belief in the Ākhirah and importance of this

belief.
• Belief in the Ākhirah is one of the fundamental articles of
Islamic belief system, the absence of or lack in which make a person Kākir. See
verse number 04 of Sura al-Baqara.
This belief means that there would be life after death when we will be given the
rewards of our worldly activities and this belief really makes us different from other
communities. Allah says in Sura al-Jasiyah, verse no. 21-22:
‫سيياَء َمييا‬
َ ‫حَييياُهْم َوَمَميياُتُهْم‬
ْ ‫سيَواًء َم‬َ ‫ت‬

• Knowledge and resultant fear of Ākhirah makes a person free
from committing any sin: ‘Āishah (r) said:

(a) This is why the Makkan Quran was preoccupied with the narration of Ākhirah and gave
its graphic description.
(b) In today’s world we have the knowledge of good and bad, still we commit sins, because
of a proper knowledge or perfect/ unadulterated fear of Ākhirah. the Prophet says:

‘If you could see what I see you must cried more and laughed less’.
Ali (R) said: If I were shown Jannat or Jahannam, I could not love or fear more...
(c) In 1930, US government enacted a law prohibiting alcohol, and upon protest from
people, spending billions of dollars and killing many people and arresting thousands,
and seeing that every household became centre of alcohol production and consumption
in secret thus pollution the whole environment, withdrew the law. While The Qur’an
uprooted it from the abruptly alcoholic Arab society with a single utterance in sura al-
Ma’edah: ‫ن‬ِ ‫طا‬

Hazrat Anas ibn Malik narrates that I was serving alcohol to people while the
announcement of this prohibition was made and I threw up the glasses and people also
did so and the whole city of madinah and its streets were flooded with alcohol.
• The story of a boy during the era of Umar (R)
whose devotion and regular appearance in the mosque surprised Umar, after ‘Isha
prayer the boy would go to his father’s service. Once he was late being interrupted by
a beautiful woman, lured by her to make love with her, suddenly remembered the
Ayah of the Qur’an, sura al-A’raf: ‫روا َفِإَذا‬
ُ ‫ن َتَذّك‬
ِ ‫طا‬
َ ‫شْي‬
ّ ‫ن ال‬

and fell fainted, after long his father came in his search, found him there, brought him, made
him awaken, heard the story, again he fainted and died. Umar heard the story the next morning
and visited his grave and recited this verse of sura al-Rahman: 46) ‫ن‬ ِ ‫جّنَتا‬
َ ‫ف َمَقاَم َرّبِه‬ َ ‫خا‬ َ ‫ن‬ ْ ‫)َوِلَم‬
Dear brothers! The graphic and horrible accounts given in the Qur’an and Sunnah are so
terrifying that people who have an iota of Iman could not control himself, will at least shed tears
and feel bleak and gloomy. This is a real manifestation of your Iman: Allah says in Sura al-
Baqara verse 74: ‫ر ِمْنيُه‬

4. Different stages of the life of Ākhirah and their graphic

description:

There are many stages which the people will have to pass to reach his final destination in
the Paradise or Hellfire. The first is Death:
A) Arrival of death:
(i) Every one will have the taste of death. Allah says in Sura al-Baqara: ‫ل َنْفسٍ َذاِئَقُة‬

Death would come at an appointed date and place, not a single split second before or
after, it will embrace if the person is in any cropper-built house. Allah says in Sura al-

• There is a story narrated by Hazrat Khaithamah (R) that Azrael Angel once
visited Solomon (A) and there he seemed very astonished looking at a man
which both Solomon and the man observed. When he disappeared the man asked
Solomon about the stranger, knew his real identity, got apprehended, requested
Solomon to send him hurriedly to China to escape from Azrael’s wrath, Solomon
ordered the air to reach him to China, Azrael then appeared in China and took
off his life, then came once to Solomon, He asked him about his horrifying look
at the man, he informed that he was supposed to take his life off after a few
seconds in China while he was still in Solomon’s court........

(ii) Experiences of death (sakratul maut): The death has been described by Allah to be a
horrible experience. The people will have two experiences during death; will seek a
respite for some days or moments, and will understand his final destination. Look at
the following Ayat of Sura al-Munafiqun, Sura al-Anfal and Sura al-Nahl:

• Horrible appearance of Azrael and the incident with Hazrat Ibraheem (A):
Azrael came to Ibraheem from Allah with the title Khalilullah (friend of
Allah)...He asked him show him his real appearance which he adopts during
taking off lives of people. He informed that that is horrible and Ibraheem could
not bear that, still upon his insistence he assumed the real appearance with
terribly long and horribly wide body while from his wide mouth flaming fire was
emerging, every hair root is like fireman emerging fire, seeing this Ibraheem
fainted... then he asked him to show his appearance while taking a pious man’s
life...he assumed a handsome smart young man’s shape with elegant dress
attractive to be looked at....

The story of Bilal (R) while death approached him and his wife regretted
his disappearance, and he remarked: How fortunate I am to meet the beloved
Prophet and his Companions very soon.
• The implore of Muadh (R) to Allah while death approached him saying: O
Allah You know that I wanted to live more, not for enjoyment and cultivation,
but so that I could enjoy the sufferings of heat and hot of fasting in a summer
day, working for your Deen, and remembering You..
• There were two people in a village, one is more pious than the other. When
death approached, both of them were asked by the angel of death to have their
last appeal to Allah. The more pious one said, I have not appeal, you please take
off my soul, I have been waiting for this moment since long to meet my Lord.’
While the other person appealed to be given time to perform two rakats of
prayer.
The Prophet ordered us to remember death:

D) Arrival in the Field of Gathering’ (Maidan al-Hashr), and its horror

• People will be resurrected and will gather in a field for giving accounts in

he implored Allah to let him see Umar after his death. Umar appeared in his dream
and he was seemed to be tired and was wiping his sweat. Abbas asked his
condition and Umar replied: I escaped very narrowly, just now I finished my
accounts and if there was not Allah’s mercy, I could not have escaped. ...This is
why the Prophet said, none even He himself will not paradise on the basis of one’s
good activities, except Allah’s mercy is shown...

• Story of a Habshi Sahabi about whether there would be any difference
between the residents of Jannat having the same amount of virtues....The Prophet
said: Every one in the Paradise will be so bright and pleasant that one’s brightness
of body be seen even from a distance of thousands of miles...
F) Hellfire:
(i) Jahannam is so obnoxious a place that even many parts of Jahannam seek shelter to
Allah from other parts. Our pious predecessors also would always cry because of the
fear of Jahannam.
• It is narrated that Hazrat Ibrahim Adham would cry a lot. When he was
asked why did he cry much, he replied,’ how can a man remain complacent in this
worldly life when he does not know where is his abode, Jahannam or Jannat’?
Ibnul Mubarak narrated an incident: ‫

(ii) Its size: We can imagine it from an incident. The Prophet was sitting with His
Companions. They heard a sound. The Prophet narrated upon their inquiry:
‘That was a stone thrown into Hell seventy years ago and it is yet in the way (the
other side) of Hell until now.’
Another Hadith says: If a stone as big as seven pregnant camels was thrown from
the edge of Hell, it would fly through it for seventy years, and yet it would not reach
the bottom.’
(iii) Its fuel and clothing: People and stones will be fuel of the Hellfire: (66:6, 14: 49-
50)

• A boy of eight years went to the school to study. Once he fainted, brought
to his residence, was asked but could not speak, a pious man assured to help him
then he spoke and said that he heard Jahannam’s fuel will be man and stone, and
he saw his mother lit fire in the burner with small wood first, he became afraid
whether Allah will lit fire in the Jahannam with small boys like him.
(iv) Fire of Hellfire: The fire in the Hellfire is so dangerous that it consumes every thing,
leaving nothing untouched. It burns skin reaching all the way to the bones, melting
the contents of the stomach, leaving up to the hearts, and exposing the vital organs.
God speaks of the intensity and affect of the Fire: ) ‫ر‬

The Fire of Hell will leap up to the hearts. The Fire will penetrate their super-sized
bodies and reach the innermost depths:
“No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher. And what can
make you know what is the Crushers? It is the fire of God,
(eternally) fueled, which mounts directed at the hearts.” (Quran
104:4-7)
The Fire will split the entrails as mentioned by the Prophet:
“A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into
the Fire. Then his entrails will be spilled out into the Fire and he will
be forced to walk around and around like a donkey in a treadmill.
The people of Hell will gather around him and say, ‘O so-and-so,
what is wrong with you? Did you not enjoin us to do good and
forbid us to do wrong?’ He will say, ‘I used to order you to do good,
but I did not do it and I used to forbid you to do evil, but I used to do
it myself.’ Then he will walk around and around like a donkey in a
treadmill.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)

• The Prophet of Islam said: “Fire as we know it is one seventieth part of the
Fire of Hell. Someone said, ‘O Messenger of God, it is enough as it is!’ He said,
‘It is as if sixty-nine equal portions were added to fire as we know it.’” (Saheeh
Al-Bukhari).

(v) Food and Drinks: Zaqqum, Puss, boiling water, discharges from the private parts of
the adulterers etc. Look at the following ayat and hadiths:

Zaqqum is a repulsive tree, its roots go deep into the bottom of Hell, its branches
stretching all over. Its ugly fruit is like the heads of the devils. People of Hell will get so
hungry that they will eat from the obnoxious tree of zaqqum. When they will fill their
bellies with it, it will start to churn like boiling oil causing immense suffering. At that
point they will rush to drink extremely hot water. They will drink it like thirsty camels,
yet it will never quench their thirst. Rather their internals will be torn. God says:
“…They will be given to drink boiling water, so that it cuts up their
bowels (to pieces).” (Quran 47:15)
The Prophet said: If a drop from Zaqqum were to land in this world, the people of
earth and all their means of sustenance would rot. So how must it be for one who
must eat it (Tirmidhi).
Another food served to the people of Hell will be festering puss that oozes out of their
skin, the discharge that flows from the private parts of adulterers and the decaying skin
and flesh of those being burnt. It is the “juice” of the people of Hell. God says:
“So no friend has he here this Day, nor has he any food except filth
from the washing of wounds which none do eat but those in sin.”
(Quran 69:35-37)
(vi) Horror of the punishment: The horror and intensity of the Fire is enough to make a man
lose his mind. He would be willing to give up everything he holds dear to be saved from it,
but he never will be. God says:
“The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the
punishment of that Day by his children, and his wife and his brother,
and his nearest kindred who shelter him, and all – all that is on earth
– so it could save him. No! Indeed, it is the Flame (of Hell), plucking
out (his being) tight to the skull!” (Quran 70:11-16)
The Prophet spoke of the lightest punishment in Hell:
“The person who will receive the least punishment among the people
of Hell on the Day Resurrection will be a man, a smoldering ember
will be placed under the arch of his foot. His brains will boil because
of it.” (Sahih Bukhari)
This person will think no one else is being punished more severely than himself, even
though he will be the one receiving the lightest punishment. (Sahih Muslim)
One of the ways God will humiliate the sinful in Hell is by gathering them on
Judgment Day on their faces, blind, deaf, and dumb.
“and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection (fallen) on
their faces – blind, dumb and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; every time
it subsides We increase them in blazing fire.” (Quran 17:97)
Another painful punishment of unbelievers will be that they will be dragged on their
faces while they are tied in chains and fettered:
“Those who deny the Book (the Quran) and that with which We sent
Our messengers – they are going to know, when the shackles are
around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged in boiling
water; then in the Fire they will be filled (with flame).” (Quran
40:70-72)
• They will weep until no tears are left, then that they will weep blood, which
will leave its traces as described by the Prophet:
“The people of Hell will be made to weep, and they will weep until
they have no tears left. Then they will weep blood until they have, as
‫‪it were, channels in their faces, if ships were put in them, they would‬‬
‫)‪float.” (Ibn Majah‬‬
