Psycho-Social Factors Associated with Youth Participation in Sports –
Jim Rodriguez, Supervisor of Athletics for Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS)
Dave Dolch, Ed.D., Coordinator of Athletics, Transportation, and Facilities for CCPS
The presenters will examine facts and trends in youth sports from recreational leagues to high school,
pressures and stressors on our youth, evolution of sports, consequences of pressure and stress and possible
solutions to reduce negative pressures and stressors on youth.

Internet Safety/Cyberbullying – Cathie Deadrick – Youth Programs Coordinator


with the Mental Health Association of Frederick County
With the many facets of the Internet and its use, your child is subject to a multitude of websites that could
be potentially dangerous. This presentation will provide information on MySpace, Facebook, Instant
Messaging, Texting, YouTube, Cyberbullying and more.

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same: Parenting in the Millennium
– Timothy Gibian, Psy.D. – Psychologist with Frederick Psychology Center
The presenter appreciates the importance that parenting plays in family life, and focuses on helping
individuals and families learn about the meaning of patterns they have developed in their lives and how
those patterns can teach us what is positive and strong about ourselves and our families, and what might
need to change. He will focus on returning to the basics, learning to ignore undesirable behaviors, and
developing consistency.

Preparing for College – Robin Bockol – FCPS School Counselor


The presenter will discuss what colleges are looking for when they review applications for admission.
There will also be information presented on how/when to look for the right college, when to start the
search, and how to enhance the student’s chance of being accepted to college.

Session 2 Workshops – 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm


Childhood Anxiety – Anne Roessler, LCSW-C with Blue Ridge Behavioral Health
The presenter will discuss common childhood fears and how and when they transfer to anxiety. Also, how
anxiety manifests, how parents can coach their children through it and when to ask for help.

Kids and Drugs: What Parents Need to Know – Emily Daniels, Parent Educator
with Frederick County Health Department’s Substance Abuse Services Division
This workshop will include information on teen drug usage in Frederick County, indicators of drug use, and
things parents can do to help prevent drug use.

Financial Aid – Susan Mentzer-Blair and Brad George – FCPS School Counselors
This workshop will provide you with information about student aid opportunities from the federal
government such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the state, postsecondary
institutions, and private sources. Processes for applying for grants, work study, scholarships and loans will
be shared. Information regarding determining financial need based on cost of attendance and expected
family contribution will be discussed. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

Transitioning to Middle School – Sally Sanino – FCPS School Counselor


This workshop will offer a brief overview of the middle school program. Also includes helpful hints for
successful transition to the next level. You are welcome to bring questions and concerns about this
monumental transition in your child’s life.
