PES 222: Industrial Waster Management

M.Tech. – Environmental Science and Technology
Instructor: Dr. Akepati S. Reddy
Date: 08-03-2010 Time: 2 hours (08-00 - 10-00 AM) Max. Marks: 48

Note:-
3 Please assume if any requisite data is not given

Q.1 Answer any 6 of the following:

1.1 Indicate the primary and secondary objectives of the wastewater treatment?
1.2 What are JTU and NTU and indicate how JTU is different from NTU?
1.3 Write note on ‘discharge coefficient’?
1.4 What is ‘turn down rate’ and indicate a flow meter that has the maximum turn
down rate?
1.5 Write note on ‘turtle’ diagram?
1.6 Express the flue gas flow rate of 2.5 m3/Sec. at 180°C in Nm3/Sec. units?
1.7 Differentiate superheated steam from the saturated dry steam and indicate any one
purpose for which the superheated steam can be used?
Marks: 1.5 x 6 = 9
Q.2 Answer any 4 of the following:
2.1 ‘Wastes are lost resources’ – support this statement with proper reasoning?
2.2 Write note on US EPA’s waste management hierarchy?
2.3 Write note on flow proportionated composite sampling?
2.4 Find the boiler blow-down rate for a 2 ton/hour boiler? The boiler is using soft
water with 400 mg/L TDS as boiler feed water, and the boiler is operated at 4000
mg/L TDS in the boiler.
2.5 Write note on ‘Pitot Tube’?
Marks: 3 x 4 = 12
Q.3 Answer any 3 of the following:
3.1 Indicate the treatment technologies that can be used for the removal of a) suspended
solids, b) colloidal solids and c) dissolved solids from wastewaters?
3.2 Estimate the flow through a V-notch of 60° angle when the head over the V-notch is
measured as 20 cm?
3.3 Write note on the energy and environmental concerns of a Vapour Absorption
Chiller and compare with those of Vapour Compression Chiller?

3.4 List the environmental concerns associated with a DG set?
Marks: 5 x 3 = 15
Q.4 Answer any 2 of the following
4.1 State why wastewaters should be characterized closest to their sources and discuss
how the parameters for the characterization of a wastewater stream should be
decided?
4.2 In a pulp mill, pulp of 11% fiber content and 3% dissolved impurities is washed in
a 2-stage counter-current washing system with water of negligible dissolved
impurities. Find hourly wastewater generation from the washing of 6 ton/hour of
pulp to 0.06% dissolved impurities level? Also find the dissolved impurities
concentration in the wastewater generated? Each stage of washing involves mixing
of the pulp in wash water and dewatering for separating the wash water. Assume
11% consistency (fiber content) for the pulp after washing.
4.3 Estimate the flue gas generation rate when a fuel with 40% ash, 45% carbon, 8%
oxygen, 4% moisture, 2% hydrogen, 1% sulfur and negligible nitrogen content is
burnt in a boiler at 750 kg/hour rate? The fuel is brunt in boiler with 40% excess
air.
Marks: 6 x 2 = 12
