FUNDRAISER FRED

NEWS REPORTER
A TEENAGER was honoured to receive an
award from the Prime Minister after
raising ELMO for charity in memory of
his mum.
Fred Godwin, aged 16, of Stratford-on-
Avon, was given a special invitation to
Downing Street to receive the Diana
Award certificate.
It was part of a charity event to mark
the 12th anniversary of the award in
memory of Diana, Princess of Wales,
who believed that young people have
the power to change the world.
Fred had been generating funds for
Myton I lospice in Warwick, where nurs-
es cared for his mother before she died.
He channelled his grief in a positive
way by encouraging his peers to help
with fundraising activities, which in-
cluded car washes and creating a cook
book.
Fred, who has learning difficulties, is
determined to keep his mum's memory
alive.
He said: "It was fantastic to get my
award from the Prime Minister. Ile is
really nice. Fin happy he is patron of the
award. I met other award holders too,
they are lovely. I am excited about get-
ting to know them and the staff better."
Prime Minister David Cameron, who
is patron of the award, said: "The Diana
Award is a wonderful way to leave a liv-
ing legacy to the late Princess and to
recognise our country's talented and in-
spirational young people who volun-
teer, work and campaign for the benefit
of others.
"I hope the event helps to showcase
some of the remarkable achievements of
our young people, and in doing so in-
spires many more to get involved and
make a difference."
Chief Executive of the Diana Award,
Maggie Turner OBE said: "We are de-
lighted to welcome the Prime Minister
as a patron, we are looking forward to
moving together in the future.
"With a growing network of 33.000
award holders, we are building a force
of yonng people who are committed to
take social action and improve our com-
munities."
The Diana Award gives youngsters the
chance to harness their commitment
with a unique training programme to
help achieve their full potential through
community projects.
