Cam and Follower Mechanism

Cam and Follower Mechanism
 To understand the working of CAM & Follower and draw the its displacement curves.

 What is the concept behind CAM?

o A CAM is a rotating machine element which gives reciprocating, oscillating or linear

motion to another element known as follower.

o They are in contact as a result of applied force.

o Force is applied through some spring or weight

o Line contact of point contact

Applications
 Engine head (to close inlet and exhaust valves)

 Wall clock

 Paper cutting machine

 Textile weaving machineries

 Feed mechanism in automatic lathe machine

Types of CAM & Followers
 Convex cam  Roller

 Tangent cam  Cup or spherical

 Concave cam  Rocker

 Unsymmetrical cam  Knife edge

 Disc cam

 Cylindrical cam

 Linear cam
