How to make a... SOCK DOG!

You will need:


2 Socks
Pins
Needle
Thread
Scissors
Toy stuffing
3 Buttons (eyes and nose)

Instructions:

A 1. Body and Legs: 1st sock. Turn inside out and flatten (diagram A).

2. Sew leg shapes (recommend backstitch with double thread).


Cut approx. 0.6cm (¼”) from stitching (diagram A).
Toe part will be used later.

3. Turn sock right side out and stuff.

4. Head: 2nd sock. B


Cut sock as shown (diagram B).
Toe and sock top will be used later.
C 5. Sew a running stitch around the “neck” edge and gather
up tightly to seal opening.
Stuff to within 1.5cm (5/8th “) of nose opening. (diagram C).

6. Nose: Pull upper edge down over lower edge


about 0.8cm (5/16th “) and slipstitch across middle
third (not right across!) (diagram D).

10. Front legs: Turn remaining sock top inside out.


Carefully cut off ribbed top, you will need this later.
Sew two leg shapes about 1.2cm ( ½”) longer than
back legs. Cut out about 0.6cm ( ¼ ” ) from
stitching (diagram H).

11. Turn legs to right side and stuff firmly.

12. Position legs with the seams facing inwards.


Tuck in the raw edge 0.6cm ( ¼”) at “shoulder”.
Where leg seam meets the body on the “tummy” I
tuck in raw edge approx. 1cm ( 3/8th”).
Pin. Slipstitch in place (diagram I).
13. Tail: Take the ribbed sock top and cut J
through it as shown (diagram J -i) then
cut open along bottom edge (diagram J-ii).

14. Flatten out and fold with right sides together.
Sew tail shape and cut out 0.6cm (¼”) from stitching (diagram K).
Turn to right side. Stuff. Turn in raw edge.
Pin in position then slipstitch in place.

15. Ears: Decide on ear type – considering dog’s character and how much sock fabric you have left.

Option 1. (diagram Option 1) Turn toe piece inside out, sew and cut as shown (diagram L).
Turn to right side. Turn under raw edge. Position then pin. Slipstitch in place.

Option 2. (diagram Option 2) These can be made with a toe piece as option 1 but if this isn’t
suitable….. Cut 4 triangles of sock fabric, 2 for each ear. Right sides together sew two
sides. Then turn up raw edge and slipstitch (diagram M). Cut off top point, then turn
to right side. Position, then slipstitch in place (diagram N).

Option 3. (diagram Option 3) Cut 4 long ear shapes, 2 for each ear. With right sides together, sew,
leaving an opening at the top (diagram O). Turn out to right side. Turn in raw edge.
Position, pin and slipstitch in place.

16. Eyes and nose: using pins, position buttons for eyes and nose. Sew in place.
