The following checklist is provided for you to check the safety and condition of your
hoist and sling. If you note any faults contact MASS to arrange for a service.

Boom

Adjuster Handle

Hand
Control

Spreader Bar

Actuator

Battery
Motor

Mast

Base
Casters Legs

Item Task & Instructions Date checked / Comments

Batteries Use the correct charger.

Charge regularly. If the hoist is used today it

should be charged today. Hoists use sealed
lead acid batteries which are designed for
regular recharging. They are not harmed by
being left on charge indefinitely when the hoist
is not in use.

Batteries Do NOT charge for less than 4hrs – lift

(continued) capacity is reduced by undercharging.
• The first 1hr of charging is used to prepare
the batteries to accept charge.
• The next 3-4hrs is the main charging
period. Batteries are often left on charge
overnight for up to 12hours – the charger
continues to provide trickle charge to take
batteries up to their full capacity.
• Unplug the charger during electrical
storms.

Avoid “dropping” the battery onto the hoist

power pack as this may bend the battery
contact pins resulting in loss of power.

Controls To ensure reliable operation of the hoist,

check that:
• All plugs are plugged in fully
• Hand control keypad is not cracked or
damaged
• Cord for the hand control is not stretched
• Control keypad buttons are being firmly
pressed down

Actuator Listen for any ticking or grinding noise coming

and from the actuator – often a warning that the
Spreader actuator may soon fail
Bar
Wipe clean and make a visual inspection of:
• Padding on the spreader bar and end of
the boom is in place and intact
• Spreader bar is operating freely
• High tensile pin attaching the spreader bar
to the boom is moving freely but not
excessively; not worn or “rounded off” at
end
• Bolt that secures the pin through the
spreader bar to the boom is secure
• Any circlips, rings or other means of
attaching the actuator or spreader bar to
the boom are intact and in good condition

Base Legs, Wipe clean and make a visual inspection
Mast and taking note of:
Boom • Legs can spread their full distance and
lock in the open and closed positions
• All bolts on the base legs are secure, none
missing.
• No visible cracks or bends in the base
legs, mast or boom
Castors Inspect axles. Remove hair, lint and dirt.

Castors turn and pivot freely.

Brakes when applied lock the castor wheels
and prevent the hoist from moving.
Check for excessive binding when pushing the
hoist.

Slings Slings should be withdrawn from use and

replaced where:
• Fabric torn; worn through or shows signs
of notable thinning
• Straps are damaged in any way; have
holes in webbing or stitch patterns are
worn, pulled or unravelled
• D-rings or nylon attachment clips (if
fitted) are damaged and have sharp
edges that could wear through fabric
