Research is a vital component of human life as it is a very powerful

tool that leads into assimilation of knowledge that paves way to understanding
which further be the reason for the evolution and progress of a certain locality
and the whole humanity. Research too can be said to the backbone of
everything that we do as it is an essential component for a good
decision-making, the data gathered can be a rich source of information in
which decisions can be based. Research therefore is an essential elements that
a person should look into as part of their day to day life and not just a part of
their academic journey because without systematic research there would have
been very little progress. Scientific research leads to progress in some field of
life. New products, new facts, new concepts and new ways of doing things are
being found due to ever-increasing significant research in the physical, the
biological, the social and the psychological fields. Research today is no longer
confined to the science laboratory.

RESEARCH AND ITS DEFINITION

Research is searching and understanding a certain phenomenon so

that conclusion can be drawn to solve specific problem or issues. Research is
an integral component of the society because it logically explains something
that is beyond our understanding. Research therefore in a broader perspective
is a complex word that cannot be understood by many unless it is describe and
be defined properly. Most of the literatures suggests that research is finding
meaning into a problem or searching a solution to any complexities in life, and
such definition cannot be denied as it is the main reason of conducting
research in general, thus in this session course you will try to understand the
deeper meaning of the word “Research” through the perspective of many
researchers and authors and by understanding their view point, you will elicit
understanding of the research concept and will be able to relate their
definition in your field of specialization.

RESEARCH AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PRFOFESSION

Research is an integral part of the day to day life and it is

undoubtedly part of our profession in which it is the basis for the decision
making process in the organization. Evidence- based practice is then the
language of every organization as it gives a background information through
conducting research to address certain problems and gaps. Research has the
following purpose: categorize, describe, explain, evaluate, compare, correlate,
predict and control.

Upon understanding of the research definition, I know that you

already have the understanding of the things and reasons for the researches to
be conducted, it is a good thing that you can now relate your understanding of
research in your field of specialization. In a glimpse of this concept, you as
future professional needs to conduct research not because it is a requirement
for you to graduate but it is a vital component of your course to solve difficult
problems, that research is the key to unleash knowledge and potentials to
solve problems to be encountered. To further intensify your knowledge of
doing research, reasons, purpose and its integral part in your chosen
profession will be given attention in this selection. After completing this
material you can now unveil the main concept in the conduct of research, you

RESEARCH TYPES AND CHARACTERISTICS

Research should have the following characteristics so we can say that it

is a good research study: controlled, rigorous, systematic, valid and verifiable,
empirical and critical. Research can classified according to the following:
nature of information (qualitative and quantitative), nature of the subject
matter (basic or applied) and approached in doing the research (longitudinal
or cross-sectional). There are other types of research design in which the
objective and the purpose of the study should be the consideration in
choosing the design.
