Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane from a

region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential
(concentrated solution) or from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of
higher solute concentration.

Osmosis is important in biological systems as many biological membranes are

semi-permeable. In general, these membranes are impermeable to organic solutes with
large molecules, such as polysaccharides, while permeable to water and small, uncharged
solutes. Hence, only water molecules equilibrate – water moves from the dilute solution
to the concentrated solution.

Note that the solute used in the experiment is sucrose/sugar and sucrose/sugar
being organic solutes cannot pass through the semi-permeable membrane used in the
experiment, the longganisa skin. Since water can pass through the membrane, an increase
in the level of fluid inside the test tube is observed. Movement of water will continue
until the two solutions become isotonic.
