do a great step to improve your English language by downloading this ebook. This guides
you some valuable techniques that I personally used and teach for the last 10 years. This

 What is a second language?
 What is behavioral learning?
How do we actually learn?
 Do I really have to learn all that grammar?
 and a lot more!

To make things a lot easier, I had chosen to make the whole course into 10 simple steps. But
before we go on, you have to promise yourself to spend some time following this 10 ways,
practice the drills, the activities and tips suggested in this manual and you will never go
wrong. In learning English, application is the key stone. If you just read this and not take
action, chances are you will not learn. Just continue reading and be what it takes to be a
great speaker of English!

Cheers to you!

What is English as a Second Language ESL?

ESL is a principle that is used to learn English as natural or nearest to your mother
language. If you are from China, your mother language is Chinese. If you are from the
Middle-east , most likely you speak Arabic.

Now an ESL course should help you speak English like a native speaker does. Note:
NOT ALL ENGLISH CLASSES ARE USING ESL. Have you ever wondered why most
students who had gone through years of study graduate and still lacking in English
proficiency? This table shows you why:

What does this table tell you? DO I REALLY HAVE TO MEMORIZE

ALL THE GRAMMAR?
It simply means that in order to learn
English more effectively, in the least It depends on where are you going to use

Step #2:
UNDERSTAND HOW DO YOU LEARN
What is your learning style? Do you like to see somebody demonstrate it first? Or do
you have to take-down notes in order for you to get it? Would you like to see some
pictures before you understand? It is possible that you have one or two learning
styles. Choose which one are you in these choices below:

Once you have determined your learning style, use it to learn English! Do more
activities that you knew you will enjoy doing. If you enjoy watching movies rather that
reading the novel version , then go ahead & watch that movie. Here some activities
you can do depending on your learning style.

1. Listen & Read

2. Watch & Learn

Watch video tutorials, attend product demos (observe how

3. Talk & Listen
NOW! Join discussion forums in school, work, or the community.
Participate in meetings or surveys in your area. Be more an
active participant. Join interest groups like a book club or
sports club. Initiate a story-telling activity with the children in
your area. It may be hard to find English-speaking groups but
you can always practice in these social groups to enhance
your confidence & communicate with a larger audience.

4. Trial & Error

Do tongue-twisters & pronunciation drills. Try to look for a
great role model who speaks English and mimic how do they
do it. My personal role model for speaking is Oprah Winfrey,
she speaks standard American accent. Try to watch her on
YouTube.

Among the four learning styles, Styles 3-4 are the most
effective ones to learn English faster. Once you get to
understand how you learn, you may choose to adopt other
learning styles which can make you learn English effectively.

Step #3:
PREPARE THE MATERIALS YOU NEED

When we say materials , it means all objects

that we find useful in learning English. Every
skill has a tools-of-trade like a carpenter (he
has a hammer), or a baker (his rolling pin).

What materials are we talking about?

1. References (paper, websites or ebooks are OK)

 Dictionary
 Thesaurus
 A good English conversational book found in local bookstores.
 Newspaper or magazines
 Library books

2. A small notebook and pen to write newly-found words.

3. Computer with internet access. Come on! We are in the cyber age.
Make use of the internet to learn. A good owned or rented computer
unit will do to watch videos and play audio books. HOT TIP: Use your
computer’s sound recorder to record your own speaking voice to check
pronunciation & intonation!
TRIVIA
Since English constantly changes in usage and
vocabulary over time English dictionaries such
as Webster’s had been published to list down
words that are accepted as part of the English
language. Keep abreast with the latest in
communication by being online.

10 Ways to Learn English

Step #4:
YOUR WORD OF THE DAY

SPELLING & VOCABULARY

Have a hand-dandy notebook and pen. Keep a small one

that always fit in to your purse or pocket. Every time you
hear a new English word from songs, movies or television,
write it down. Don’t worry about the spelling it wrong, consult a dictionary later to
correct it . Then look for the meaning of the word you discovered. It should look like
this:
“impending”- approaching, about to happen. (word-meaning)
“argument”- discussion, debate

THE 1 WORD PER DAY RULE: If you will be able to list one new English word/ day:
that will be 30 words/ month and 365 new words added to your vocabulary/ year!
You can double the number if you wanted to. But, all you need to do right now is
start small: 1 correctly-spelled and defined word per day will make a difference.

PRONUNCIATION

The same rule apply with learning how to pronounce English correctly: List one word
a day and write the sound-spell of the words as mnemonics. It may look like this:

“mnemonics” –NEH-mow-nics (CAPITALIZE the stressed syllable)

“often”- OF-ten

This list helps you deal with correct pronunciation: stress, intonation as well as silent
letters such as “DEBT” – det, “PSALM” –salm & “RECIEPT” -reSEET . Start small, just
do it one word a day.

“Changing an old habit is what learning is all about. If we could substitute one mispronounced word
with the correct one per day, then we could have 365 English words pronounced correctly in a
year!” –Posted on Facebook by English Learning

10 Ways to Learn English

Step #5:
MAKE FUNNY FACES
Speaking of pronunciation, we cannot go away with using our speech apparatus.
What am I saying? In order to pronounce English words correctly, you must use all
the necessary parts properly.

What are they?

 facial muscles (cheeks, brows & jaw muscles)
 mouth (lips)
 tongue
 teeth
 jaw
 hard palate (the hard roof inside your mouth)
 throat (including the glottis –the red thing hanging at the back of your mouth)
 diaphragm (the muscle that supports your lungs when you breathe)
 lungs

Why do you still sound so different no matter how hard you imitate an accent? It is
because you facial muscles are not accustomed into uttering English words.
Speaking in a new language really feels awkward at first, but once your lips, teeth,
tongue and all others are used into uttering English in a daily basis, chances are, it
will be easier for you to sound like a real native speaker!

How do we do this?! Answer: make funny faces!

You heard it right! Let me explain to you. How do we strengthen

our abs, arms and back? We exercise, right? Same principles also
apply to speaking. English words require the movement of the lips, muscles and
facial muscles just like singing. If you are not used into singing a lot, chances are you
will become croaky, your voice harsh and you feel pain in the throat and jaws. We
exercise our speaking parts in order to pronounce words correctly, speak with the
right intonation, speed and speak for a long time without stuttering.

Are you ready for some face exercise? Go to the next page!

www.teachingyouenglish.com
10 Ways to Learn English

Do this in front of a mirror. 2-3 times a week.

I usually have my students do this exercise to improve
on their pronunciation and it still works!

1. Warm-up
a. Open your mouth real wide, stretch your
lips to a full “Aaaaahh”. Feel your jaws
opening. Do this in 10 counts.
b. Stretch your lips sideways saying
“EEEEEEE”. Your teeth should be closed,
feel the pressure of the cheek muscles
pulling the lips on both side. Do this in 10
counts.
c. Say “Ooooowwww”. Round the lips as
round as you can. Pout it as long as you C’mon! Don’t be shy.. Say Aaaahh!
can. Feel the pressure of pulling your lips This really is weird at first, but it
out. Do this in 10 counts. does help. Or else, I wouldn’t
dedicate an entire page for this!

2. Angry Face/ Happy Face

a. Make an angry face. Crumple your face as close as
you can. Make your face the smallest face in the
world! Hold it in 5 counts.
b. Make a happy face. Stretch your brows as high as
you can. Give the biggest smile you can make. Hold
it in 5 counts.
c. Do it again!

3. Tongue Flex
a. Stretch out your tongue make it as long as
you can. Hold it in 5 counts.
b. Wiggle your tongue clock-wise 4x, then
counter clockwise 4x.
c. Do it again!

Step #6:
GROOVE SOME MUSIC

Music is a universal language. No matter

what age, gender or country you are from,
music has a big part of your culture. The best
examples of good pronunciation & phrasing
can be found in poetry and songs. Take your
pick: folk, pop, rock, RnB whichever you like
as long as it is in English, no problem! Also,
singing in English helps you understand
literary or artistic meaning.

How do we use music to learn English?

1. Pick any English song you like. Memorize
its lyrics & tune.
2. Try to interpret yourself the meaning of
the song. Is it a sad song, a love song?
What is the song all about?
3. The next time you sing it, try to imitate
how the artist enunciate each line.
4. If you have the opportunity, talk about it
with your friends!
YouTube Karaoke videos are great

you speak. Here just some of my most
recommended songs: Pop
“sk8ter Boy” by Avrill Lavigne
Classic “Busses and Trains” by Bachelor Girl
“I will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor “Where is the Love?” by The Black
“Top of the World” by the Carpenters Eyed Peas
“It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones

Step #7:
GO SEE A MOVIE

What could be a better way to hear how native speakers

sound than watching a movie? A film report is a common
activities in an ESL classroom. Aside from the proper
pronunciation, students develop critical thinking skills. You
examine, interpret and comment on a movie you had seen.
If you’re watching a movie with friends, it’s undeniable to
judge the film whether its good or bad.

What should we do when watching a movie?

• Pick any Hollywood film on the genre you like.
• Describe the main character.
• Summarize the story.
• Determine the main idea or moral of the story.
• Discuss what you did & did not liked in the story.

Some recommended titles:

Drama Comedy
“Forrest Gump” “Mrs. Doubtfire”
“Patch Adams” “Dr. Dolittle”
“The Wedding Singer” “Bruce Almighty“
“Evita” “ Evan Almighty”

Fantasy/ Sci-fi Animation

“ Transformers 1 & 2” “Toy Story” installments
“The X-Men” installments “Madagascar”
“The Matrix” installments “Up”
“The Lord of the Rings” installments
“The Men in Black”

Step #8:
MEET & GREET OTHER PEOPLE

We are almost done in the course of

enumerating the 10 ways of learning English.
Whether you like it or not, we have to include
socialization. You have to build the courage to
meet & greet people outside your comfort
zone. Take a look at the diagram below:

The idea is: Can you conquer your fear of speaking in English to

COMFORT ZONE
This diagram now shows a person who can confidently approach & talk to even a
complete stranger. The barrier between yourself and other people should be
minimized and treat others as an equal.

Yeah, but why do I have to talk to strangers? Is it really necessary?

Well if you are working, around 60-99% of your time will be spent in meeting
strangers. Whether they are customers, clients, the government, or foreigners, you
will get to a situation wherein you have to speak-up and state yourself in English! If
you will be travelling abroad, well conquering your fear is absolutely necessary.

OK I get what you mean... But how do I do it? How do I get the courage to speak in
English?! Answer: It all started with “Hello”…

1. Read conversational books on the following topics:

• Basic courtesies & greetings
• Proper table manners
• Basic telephone etiquette
• Ordering from a store or restaurant
• Giving/asking directions

2. Have the right mindset- Treat them as an equal.

You have something to say and you are worthy to
be listened to.

10 Ways to Learn English

Step #9:
HAVE THE COURAGE TO GO BEYOND
3-WORD UTTERANCES

If you have been following the 8 previous steps thoroughly,

it means that you should be ready to talk longer, with more
words and these words are in the right usage.
How do I say “The
Does this guy look familiar to you? movie is good” in
English?

But I already did spoke some English?! You mean I should speak more?

You got it right! By this time you should be ready to express yourself in more
than 3 words. A good ESL conversation should be able to express oneself in 5
OR MORE WORDS with clarity and focus.

10 Ways to Learn English

First: How does our native-speaking brain compose a message?

• The brain speaks in your native language (Chinese, Arabic,

Japanese, Spanish etc.) but wants to say something in English.
Think

• You brain spends time thinking of the right English words to

use, grammar and also worries on other peoples’ reaction to
Translate your message.

• If you need to speak while the brain is still in the process of

thinking what to say, your mouth will utter non-words such as
“ahhh…”, “Duhh…” & “Mmm…”
Talk • If you already though of what to say but your brain is still unsure
of how to say it, chances are you stutter or eat up your words!

THIS is the reason why people fail to learn how to speak English fluently. If you
worry too much in translating what to say, how to say it and the people’s
reaction, chances are you had been wasting your time, as well as others’ time
waiting for you to say something.

How should we do it? I have a course in college called Thinking Skills in English
and this is how it goes. See how it saves your time & lets you speak more crisp
English.

• The brain is already trained for thinking straight in English. You just
need to arrange your message a little bit before saying it.
Think
• If you have something to say, just say it. Don’t worry about
committing any mistake. Just apologize & deal with the corrections
Talk later.

10 Ways to Learn English

All right now I understand. But how can I develop thinking in English?

Remember that you already know how to:

how to enhance your vocabulary by listing & using the dictionary;
how to find role models like people music and movies; as well as
finding resources like reading books & browsing the internet.

It means the only barrier left for you to learn is to let go of your native language
and adopt the second language which is English!

What?! Are you saying to forget my mother tongue?!

Nope. All I’m saying is that if a situation requires you to speak English, then don’t
use your mother language to do the thinking. Use English to think faster. Have the
courage to expand your comfort zone and free yourself in using the English
language.

Let’s start getting up in the morning, & greet others in English. When making
decisions, try to talk to yourself in English.

Hmmm…Apples are rich

10 Ways to Learn English

Step #10:
GO AND CONQUER THE WORLD!
Awesome! I’m so proud of you!

In this part, we shall be dealing with the final touches of improving your
communication skills in English. We’ll just be tweaking stuff & adding some ideas
to help you go out & conquer the world.

I had mentioned earlier in the introduction something about behavioral learning.

Well, language is behavioral in nature, meaning what you utter are words that
mainly express how you feel and what you think. If you feel happy, you utter
happy words. Same happens when you are sad, angry or lonely.

To learn a new language means that you have to deal with your own behavior
towards other English speakers. It is natural to feel somewhat shy or intimidated
towards foreigners, the rich & the educated, but it doesn’t need to be that way
forever. To learn behaviorally means to learn how to understand yourself, free
yourself from fear, shyness & intimidation.

How do we do that?

Look into the mirror and evaluate yourself:

1. Do I look to the person I speak with?

2. Do I make hand gestures as well as facial
expression?
3. Can I express my sense of humor in
English ?
4. Do I also listen to other people’s
feedback as well?
5. Do I convey sincerity & respect through
my manner of speaking?

www.teachingyouenglish.com
10 Ways to Learn English

If your answers to the questions above are more of “yes”, then congratulations!
This means that you can now go ahead and do other stuff. But if your answers are
more of a “no” then you have to read this last part of the manual.

This part is mainly on the non-verbal traits you have while talking. Take time to
record A video yourself while talking to somebody and take note of your gestures,
facial expression and intonation.

What is Non-verbal Communication?!

This is the message you send when you are not speaking. Take the picture below
as an example:

I’m so happy
to be here!

Does this girl look believable? Her

verbal message is entirely different
from the way she looked!

Do you know that 73% of your entire message come from the way look when
you speak? Meaning, people judge on your non-verbal traits in order for you to
be believable. The truth of your message also has to be supported by your
actions, if not, people will not be interested, get bored of simply would not
bother to listen to you.

To test this: Watch the daily news and see which people on TV would you
actually believe through their statements and those you are not bother
listening to. Then try to compare these people.

www.teachingyouenglish.com
10 Ways to Learn English

How do we improve on my Non-verbal Traits?

1. Have Eye-contact- They say that we show

sincerity through looking straight in the eye. Yes it is
still is correct. But we don’t need to look straight in
the eye every time. To be effective, gaze at the
person’s face from time to time, looking on the
bridge between the eyes for 3 seconds or more.
Practice looking at people confidently, ease the fear
and tension. You will see great results by having
good eye-contact.

2. Use Gestures- Use your hands freely as you

speak, rather than folding them on your chest.

Being too still or stiff gives an impression that you
are not comfortable of the person you are
speaking with. Use your hands to clap, point at
something and tap at your friends shoulder to get
attention.
3. Eliminate Non-words- Lessen or eliminate non-
words such as “ummm..” “duhhh….” and “mmm…” , as
well as stammered words like “I …ah.…need to …… to
tell something…”. These non-words suggests
nervousness or uncertainty, most likely will turn
people off. To do this means that you should be
prepared to respond to any English-speaking situation
through practice.

4. Use your sense of humor- You can do this if you are

already are confident in communicating with other
people. Sharing a good joke livens a conversation and
establish relationships. Just be careful at throwing
jokes, it might ruin your talk for being misunderstood.
Laugh & enjoy, make the people feel that you are
happy to talk to them.
