1. Which is best for the International Services Division, a dedicated-server network or peer-

to-peer LAN? Explain your choice.

I would say that the best choice for the international services division is a dedicated server

network due to the following reasons:

a) A peer- to – peer LAN is too small to support a network with the goals of the

international service division. There is potential traffics which can overload A peer-

to-peer LAN. Therefore, it would be impossible with a peer-to peer LAN.

b) A peer-to- peer LAN might be working in a short term, but in long term, it will not be

suitable, it NDAS continues with its growth projections.

c) Because of those reasons, I think that A dedicated-serer network will be best. On the

other hand, A dedicated-server network can handle dial-up call inquiries at the current

volume and the projected increased volume and can be used to connect all NDAS’s

remote office when needed.

2. Draw a network plan that includes the general layout of the LAN (computers, servers,

cables, hubs/switches) and recommend what type of LAN to install (e.g., 10Base-2,

10Base-T, switched 10Base-T, wireless Ethernet 802.11b). Justify your recommendation.

I would recommend 10Base-T type of LAN because it is gradually replacing Ethernet for wired

local networks because it is much faster. It has a transmission speed of 1000 Mbps. Therefore, it

can be used in data centers for fast service switching or in desktop PC for broadband application.

It can also use existing copper cabling negating the need to rewire the system with newer optical

fiber cables.

3. Sally Wong has heard horror stories about LAN bottlenecks. Prepare a brief discussion of

LAN bottlenecks and what can be done to improve LAN performance.

a) LAN bottlenecks: Normally, bottlenecks will be in one of two places. The first will be in the

computers attached to the network and the second will be in the network circuit. In order to find

the location of the bottleneck, it will be a wise idea to watch the utilization of the network server

during periods of poor performance. If the server utilization is high (between, 60-100%), then the

bottleneck is the server, it will not be possible to do all the requests it receives in a timely

manner. if the server utilization is low during periods of poor performance (between 10 and

40%), then the problem lies with the network circuit, the circuit can not transmit requests to the

server as quickly as needed. If the server utilization is in the mid-range (between 40 and 60%),

things are getting difficult. Therefore, the bottleneck can shift between the server and circuit

depending upon the kind of request, and in order to provide the best performance both need to be

upgraded.

b) LAN performance can be improved by the following points.

a. Improving server performance.

(1) Software

(a) Fine tune the current network operating system

(b) Replacing the network operating system with a faster network

operating system

(c) Disk caching

(d) Disk elevating

(2) Hardware

(a) increase the number of servers

(b) Faster/higher CPU

(c) increase the memory

(d) upgrade to Faster disks

(e) upgrade to a Faster network interface card

b. Improving circuit capacity.

(1) Bigger circuit

(2) Change token ring

(3) Segment network

c. Reduce network demand.

(1) Remove unnecessary or old files off the network

(2) Revise schedules to allow off-peak processing

4. What safeguards do you recommend for NDAS to control the use of illegal copies of software

on the LANs?
Kung Thang Case study 6 3/15/21

a. It should not be allowed to use any personal software on the LAN. Letting all employees

know that using personal software on the LAN can lead to unemployment.

b. All users should be trained about the importance of controlling illegal copies of software

on a local area network because 1) the organization can be sued for copyright

infringement, 2) the organization can get computer vires which can lead to a significant

monetary loss, 3) Software publisher can be out of business if they do not make money or

if Users do not pay money for their software.

c. The LAN supervisor needs to monitor to detect any illegal software on the LAN with

LAN metering software carefully.

d. Management is committed to make sure that procedures to safeguard against illegal

copies of software on NDAS LANs are enforced, that software audits are conducted.
