AN OVERVIEW OF NCC
The year 1978 saw Sri AVS Raju take that single step along with like-minded people to establish
NCC. It was the vision of this simple man who believes in human values, common sense and
value of time.
It has been journey of excellence since then. Starting off with the corporate office in Hyderabad,
regional offices were opened to facilitate the geographical spread of new projects. NCC was
listed on the BSE & NSE stock exchanges in 1992.
The year 1995 saw NCC crossing a turnover of Rs. One billon. The Property Division was
established in 1996 followed by the Transportation Division in 1998. The Water Electrical,
Power, Irrigation, Metals, Oil & Gas Divisions are established subsequently. The GDRs, of the
Company are listed on the Luxembourg stock exchange. The enormous trust placed by foreign
institutional investors is reflected by the investment
of US $ 100 million as on date by the Blackstone group of USA.
The Company has offices in Muscat (Oman) and Dubai (UAE) and has bagged projects in these
countries.
Today, NCC is the only construction company from India hailed a ‘Best Under a Billion’ in Asia
Pacific by Forbes Asia. It is ranked as the fastest growing construction company in the country
by Construction World - NICMAR and also as the 2nd largest company in terms of turnover for
the year 2006-07. It is also rated as one of India’s most admired companies by Construction
World and is the 4th fastest growing company in India across all sectors in a study conducted
by Dalal Street Magazine. NCC has a super ranking of 103 among India's top 1000 companies. It
has also been ranked third on the basis of total income in construction and allied activities
sector by Dun and Bradstreet in their acclaimed publication “India's Top 500 companies” in
2006.
The Company’s projects have been recognized as the ‘Outstanding Structure of the Year” by the
Indian Concrete Institute two years in a row. NCC was awarded a bonus of Rupees 20 million
for early completion of its projects. Its turnover for the financial year 2006-07 stood at Rs.29
billion.
Through the years and into the future. NCC continues to be on a steady drive towards
perfection by maintaining old customs and adding new endeavors-across decades, across
countries, across disciplines. It has marched on, towards newer horizons and newer challenges.
The saga of excellence continues.............
NCC is strongly committed to safety and accident prevention on project sites and work places
to ensure that accidents do not take place, employees’ morale and satisfaction is improved, and
in turn, the performance of Company is enhanced.
One of our priorities is to protect the environment and the health and safety of the people who
work for us. The effective management of health and safety and protection of the environment
are integral to our business success.
Everyone at NCC is accountable for health, safety and environment (HS&E) and we work hard
to foster a culture where these three factors are taken into account wherever we operate.
NCC integrates HS&E into all areas of its operation, so that its sites are healthy and safe for all
who work in them. NCC is committed to carrying out all its activities without detriment to the
Environment.

Dry Density of Soil In-Place of
Core Cutter Method
Project : COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2010, D.U Rev.-01
( North Campus)
PMC : M/s. Engineers India Ltd
Name of Contractor : M/s NCCL
(I.S: 2720-XXIX)
Aim: To determine the Field density of Fine grained soil by using Core-cutter. (It
is less accurate than sand Replacement Method and recommended for well
Compacted soils.
Apparatus:
Balance of 1 g accuracy.
Procedure:
A small area, approximately 30 cms square of the soil layer to be tested shall
be exposed and leveled.
Cutter shall be rammed down vertically into the soil layer until only about 15
mm of dolly protrudes above surface.
Care to be taken that cutter shall not rock sideways while hammering.
The cutter shall be dug out of surrounding soil by pick axe. Please take care so
as to have some protruding soil mass from the lower edge.
Soil from both the ends shall be trimmed flat to the ends of cutter.
Remarks – Often problem encountered when soil mass is dry and cutter is not
properly filled up or looses soil while handling. In such case test is to be done
by sprinkling water and testing after suitable lapse of time. Core cutter shall be
removed, trimmed and kept in polythelene bag to take it to laboratory. It shall
be weighed with cutter and any loose soil mass collected in bag.
Calculations :
Yb = ( Ws – Wc ) / Vc , gms /cm3
Format to be used:
NCC/CWG-2010/F-13
Apparatus :
Compressive Testing machine having adequate capacity.
Weighing Balance.
Measuring Scale.
Procedure :
Remove the cubes required for testing from curing tank wipe clean of water and
air dry them to surface dryness.
Record the actual surface area ( Sq cm)of the cube which will be in contact with
platen of CTM ( A in cm2 or mm2 ).
Weigh the cubes and record the weights in the register in kg.
Position the top platen on cube surface. See that there is no gap left between
cube top and platen.
Load the CTM at desired speed without any shocks.( Pointer and needle shall
move together)
When crushing takes place in the specimen, needle will start falling back but
pointer will remain at maximum reading.
Record the reading shown by pointer viewing perpendicular to the face of dial.
( Load applied in kN or tonne- W)
Relieve the load from CTM. Remove the cube. Clean the platens.
Check the features of cube failure. Good failure is that cube mass retained
shall have concavity on sides. If failures are occurring consistently by crack
developing only on one side it means cubes are eccentrically loaded. If cracks
are always developed centrally means point load is getting applied due to
Convexity of platens. Remedial measures are required to be taken for this.
Calculations:
When three or more cubes from single batch/lot is tested, max variation is
allowed +/- 15%. If any cube is showing more variation, result of that cube is
discarded and average of two or more is to be taken.
Recording :
Format to be used:
Cube Register
Compression testing of cube testing - NCC/CWG-2010/F-08
( I.S : 2386-IV )
Aim:
Apparatus:
15 cm dia steel cylinder with plunger and base plate, tamping rod 16 mm dia and
600 mm long with one end rounded, Weighing balance of accuracy 1 g, Sieves 12.5
mm , 10 mm & 2.36 mm, Drying Oven, CTM
Procedure :
The aggregate shall be tested in surface dry condition. If dried by heating, the
period of drying shall not exceed 4 hours and temp shall be 100-110 deg C.
The quantity of the sample shall be such that the depth of material in the
cylinder after tamping shall be 10cms.
Cylinder shall be filled up in 3 layers and each layer shall be tamped 25 times
with tamping rod and finally leveled off.
The plunger shall be placed in position and the apparatus shall be then placed
between the platens of CTM.
Load shall be applied at uniform rate so that load of 40t is reached in 10 minutes.
The load shall be removed from the cylinder and sieved through 2.36 mm
Sieve. The fraction passing sieve 2.36 mm shall be weighed to nearest 1g
Such two tests shall be taken.
Reporting:
Format to be used:
NCC/CWG-2010/F-03A
(IS: 2386 – I)
Aim:
To determine the Elongated shape of particles of Coarse Aggregate greater than 6.3
mm size.
Apparatus:
Balance with accuracy of 0.1% of weight of the sample, Elongation Index Gauge
All other as per Sieve analysis.
Sample:
It shall be taken from retained material from Sieve analysis preferably and should
Have at least 200 pieces of any fraction.
Procedure:
Each sample of 20mm and 10mm metal shall be taken from retained fraction.
Report:
The Elongation Index is the total weight of the material passing the various
Thickness gauges; expressed as a % of the weight of total sample gauged.
Format to be used:
NCC/CWG-2010/F-01
(IS: 2386 – I)
Aim:
To determine the Flakiness of particles of Coarse aggregate greater than 6.3 mm
size.
Apparatus :
It shall be taken from retained material from Sieve analysis preferably and should
have at least 200 pieces of any fraction.
Procedure :
Report :
The flakiness Index is the total weight of the material passing the various
thickness gauges; expressed as a % of the weight of total sample gauged.
Format to be used:
NCC/CWG-2010/F-02
Apparatus :
Measuring cylinder 250 ml, Common Salt.
Procedure :
Prepare 1% solution by mixing 10gms of common salt in 1litre of water.
Add Sand as received in the cylinder till its level reaches 100 ml.
Add Solution again so that the mixture reaches the level of 150 ml.
Cylinder top is now covered with the palm of hand and shake vigorously by
turning upside down.
Calculations :

first by bitumen impregnated jute and then by cement mortar of proportion 1:2
The pipeline shall be tested for water tightness by filling with water upto a level 1.5
in above the top of pipe. The above list are applicable if the pipe are said for sewer
line, drain line etc.

4. DETAIL ACTION PLAN
Site Preparation
Prior to start of chemical treatment area(s) shall be made free from logs, stumps, timber off
cuts, leveling pegs, roots of plants/trees etc. Soil treatment shall start when foundation
trenches/pits are ready to take concrete/masonry on foundations and plinth area ready for
laying the sub grade. Treatment shall not be carried out when it is raining or the subsoil
water level is at the same or higher grade than the level of treatment. On the event of water
logging of foundations. The water shall be pumped out and the chemical emulsion applied
when the soil is absorbent.
Treatment of the excavated pits/trenches and backfill for foundation
The bottom surface and the lower 300mm. side surface of the excavated pits/trenches for
foundations of masonry works and RCC plinth beams supporting such masonry works shall
be treated with specified chemical emulsion 5 liters/Sqm. of the surface area. However, no
such treatment shall be required in case of pits. Trenches made from RCC foundations
supporting walls.
On completion of construction of masonry foundation the backfill in immediate contact with
the substructure shall be treated in layers, of 300mm, with emulsion @7.5 Itrs/Sqm of the
vertical surface of the sub-structure (i.e. 7.5X.3002.25 liters/meter of perimeter) for each side.
The treatment shall he given after ramming of each layer of soil, by roding the earth at 150
mm centers close.
To the wall surface and working the rod backward and forward (parallel to the wall surface)
arid then spraying the specified dosage of emulsion
directed towards the masonry surfaces so that the soil in contract with these surfaces in well
treated with the chemical. After the treatment, the soil shall be tamped back into place. This
shall be done for full depth of the fill.
For RCC walls and columns, the treatment as specified above shall start from a depth
500mm below the finished ground level, and shall be gone up to the FGL.
The top surface of the consolidated earth below the non-suspended floor slabs and the
peripheral, aprons of widths up to 750mm, the bottom surface and side surfaces of the
excavated pits for the basements shall he treated with chemical emulsion @ 5 liters/Sqm. of
the surface area. Holes 50 to 75 mm deep at 150 mm centers, both ways. shall he made on the
surface with 12 mm diameter mild steel rod and then emulsion shall, be sprayed uniformly
over the area. At expansion joint locations, anti-termite treatment shall be supplemented by
treating through the expansion joint @. 2.0 liters per linear meter of joint after the sub grade
has been laid.
Treatment of Junctions of Plinth Filling Sand Wall/Column Faces shall he done after making
a small channel 3OmmX3Omrn by making rod holes 150mm apart(up to the ground level)
in the channel and then by moving the rod backward and forward to break up the earth. The
chemical emulsion shall be poured along the channel (ZI 7.5 liters/Sqm. of the vertical
wall/Column surface so as to soak the soil right to the bottom. The soil shall he tamped back
into place after the treatment.
After the building is complete, the earth along the external perimeter shall be rodded at
intervals of 150mm and to depth of 300mm. The rod shall be moved backward and forward.
Parallel to the wall to break up the earth and chemical emulsion poured along the wall 7.5
liters/Sqm. of vertical surface (i.e. 7.5X0.300 = 2.25 liters/meter of perimeter). After the
treatment, the earth shall be tamped back into place.
Mixing shall he done as per manufacturing of approved company.
