v GENERALREQUIREMENTS.

5.1 SUMMARY
All parts must complywith EngineeringMaterialSpecificationWSS-M99P9999-AIto help safeguard
health,safetyand the environment.

5.2 PART CONDITION


Parts as suppliedto Ford locationsshall be completelycoveredwith the finish specified. Parts shall
also be commerciallycleanand shall be free from corrosion,chips,looselyadherentmetaloxides,dirt,
abrasivesor otherforeignmaterial.Handling,storage,packaging,preservation,and deliveryshallbe in
accordancewith QS-9000.

EMBRITTLEMENT AVOIDANCE
All components,exceptspacedthreadtappingscrews per WD950, shall complywith the requirements
of WSS-M99A3-A.

5.4 PROTECTIVEFINISHESON THREADS


Bolt threads with relativelythick coatings(e.9. greater than 8 micrometres)may require additional
allowanceto accommodatethe coating. The threaddimensionsbeforecoatingshall be determinedby
the Supplierand shall be manufactured withintoleranceclass 6 limits. The thread allowanceshall be
limitedby the upperdeviationof toleranceclass 69 (es) and the lower deviationof toleranceclass 6e
(ei).
Note:This allowsthe manufacturerto size the parts anywherewithin the total tolerancespan of class
69 (es)through6e (ei). To minimizedeviationwithina lot, the lot shall be limitedto a tolerancegrade6.
See ISO 965 for informationregardingthreadtolerances.
After plating/coating
the threadsshallmeetthe requirementsof toleranceclass6h usinga GO/NOTGO
screw ring gauges. For acceptabilityof threaddamage after plating/coatingthe torque appliedto the
GO screwringgaugeshallnot exceed0.0015d"Nm.
Nut threads shall be manufacturedto 6H tolerance. When coated with zinc flake type coatings
tightnessto thread inspectiongauges may be experienced,however,the coating thicknessshall not
adverselyeffectthe mechanicalperformanceof the nut or have an adverse effect on normal installation
practices. Zinc flake coatednuts shall be tested using an uncoated(or zinc plated)69 bolt. The nut
shall engageon the bolt by hand,the maximumprevailingtorque measuredover a minimumof 1.5dof
rotationsshallnot exceed1Nm.

TEST METHODS. SPECIALREQUIREMENTS FOR FASTENERS


Requirementsdefined in this protectivefinish specificationapply to parts as received by Ford and shall
be evaluatedusingthe followingtest methodsand definitionsas applicable.
5.5.1 SIGNIFICANT SURFACES
Significantsurfacesare thosesurfacesvisibleon a part as normallyassembled,or surfacesthat
can be a sourceof corrosionproductsvisibleon an assembledvehicle. Significantsurfacesare
usedwhen assessingconosion.
5.5.2 COATINGTHICKNESS
Threads,sharpedges,crevices,holes,slotsand recessesshall not be used for coatingthickness
measurement.The measurementof coatingthicknessshall be in accordancewith ISO 4042
Clause10.
5.5.3 SALT SPRAYTEST
Salt spray tests shall be conductedin accordancewith SAE/USCAR-1,which supersedesany
salt spray requirementsstated in the specifiedmaterial/performance specifications. lt is not
intendedfor salt spraytestingto be conductedon every lot. Salt spray testing is intendedto be
usedto monitorthe processand shallbe conductedin accordancewith QS-9000.
5.5.4 WASHERADHESION
The washercomponentof nut and washerassemblies,and bolt and washer assembliesshall be
free to rotate so that installationis not affected by spinning of the washer component. The
washer may not be free spinninginitially,when heavy finishes are applied. Acceptableinitial
washer componentadhesionshall become loose after a 0.0015d" [Nm] breakawaytorque is
applied.

5.6 DIP SPINAPPLIEDCOATINGS.RECESSFILL,THREADFILL,AND OTHERPOTENTIALISSUES
5.6.1 Some finishesare appliedby: a) depositingthe fastenersinto a perforatedbasket;b) immersing
the basket into a tank of the uncured material;c) elevatingthe basketabove the tank; and e)
spinningthe basket above the tank. The basket'srotationalspeed overcomesthe centripetal
force, shedding excess materialto provide the desired coating thickness. Materialviscosity,
fastenergeometry,fastenerorientationin the basket,load size, and rotationalspeed are major
factorsin the applicationof thesefinishes.
5.6.2 Internallydriven fasteners(recess drive), fastenerswith internalcavitiessuch as nuts, rivets,
partswith extruded,closed-endholes, partswith through-holes, fastenerswith fine pitchthreads,
and other similarfeaturestrap excess materialin the cavities,which the spinningprocessdoes
not completelyremove.
5.6.3 CAUTION: lf the dip spin process is used to apply coatingsto fastenerswith these design
features,a percentageof the fastenerswill have recess fill, clogged holes, bubbled coating,
and/orthread bridging. As a result,fastenerswith these finishesand designsmay experience
issueswith form,fit, and functionat the assemblyplants.
5.6.4 To avoid these issues, considerapplyingthe dip spin finish using a differentprocessmethod
such as spray, tumble spray,and planetaryrotary systems. These processesmay significantly
reduce recess fill, but will still yield some recess fill. Alternatively,considerexternallydriven
fastenerdesigns,non-dipspin finishes,and platedfinishes.

Note: Dip Spin coatingsare identifiedunder their respectivefinishdescriptionswithinthis specification.
