Greetings Sisters and Brothers!
Financial Report 2
Have you ever heard the phrase “addition by subtraction”? Or maybe, “less is more”?
These phrases play on the idea that an abundance does not always equal success or Caring and Sharing 2

happiness. Parish Nurse 4, 6

For example, Parker and Wesley love trains. So, for the last several years they have Activities 4, 5, 6
been collecting a particular train set made by Fisher Price, GeoTrax. Consequently, for GoodSearch/GoodShop 7
the last several years as birthday and Christmas gifts they would usually get another
piece from this GeoTrax set to add to their collection. This past summer us mans, as Calendar 7

Wesley likes to call us, got out all the pieces they have for these trains. Now mind Tableau fundraiser 4
you, over the years we have collected enough big pieces to fill a toy box and enough
track pieces to fill a three drawer storage con-
tainer. We got out the mat and began to build.
By the time we finished, we had built a three
story track that was about seven feet long and
four feet wide. This was massive, and pretty
impressive I might add. It also had four, six-car
trains that were running on it. They could go up
and down, they could go left and right at various 03/03 Joyce Fraser
switch stations, and they could go off the track 03/06 Jean Fay
into little loading stations; if the boys so desired. Susan Leighton
Parker and Wesley were so enamored with this 03/07 Brenda Shinn
thing they played with it for three whole...days. We spent the better part of a whole 03/13 Evelyn McMurrer
afternoon and evening putting this monument together. So you can imagine my cha- 03/15 Charles Reid
grin when I walked out into the living room one day and these two boys, loves of my 03/19 Kristen Palmer
life, had dismantled it. In fact, what was one large design was now two very small 03/20 Chuck Hughes
tracks and a lot of debris. Parker was playing with this little loop that he had made. It 03/23 Karen Palmer
had one, three-car train, and a ramp in two places so the train could travel up and 03/24 Eunice Charles
down. Wesley just had a circle and was using one, manual train engine. I watched for Charles Lee
a minute and then sat down next to Parker and asked him what happened. Without 03/25 Rachel Boddy
looking up from his toy, he said very simply, “it was too much Daddy.” Too much? 03/26 Hilda Bolomey
This thing was beautiful, it was enormous, it was a GeoTrax nirvana! So I asked him 03/28 Carole Newlin
what he meant. He explained that there was too much going on and that he could not 03/29 Parker Allen
pay attention to everything that was happening and the trains kept crashing into each 03/30 Wilhelmina Rogers
other. He summed it all up with, “this is much more fun.” That was it...less was more.
Addition by subtraction.
This time of year we begin the season of Lent and, as is the custom, many of us will
give up something for Lent. Some people give up food, others give up habits, and
there are a myriad of other things people give up as well. As I think about this prac-
tice, I am reminded by things some people have given up that they never picked up 03/05 Debbie & Ed Ford
again. The core reason behind giving up something for Lent is to align ourselves with 03/22 Faye & Jim Pippin
the idea that Christ gave His life for us. Therefore, we sacrifice something in our lives
in that model. The result was intended to be that the time you spent doing or eating
involved with the practice you gave up, would be spent growing closer to God, deepen-
ing your relationship with Christ, and listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

FROM THE PASTOR (continued)

This year as you ponder how you might want to participate in this practice of sacrifice during Lent, if you find yourself
struggling with “missing” some aspect of your routine, remember that less can be more...addition can be gained through
subtraction...and it can be in those quiet times of reflection that God can be heard the loudest!

“LOVE CAME DOWN”…

...Lake Weir Ave, 1 mile from our Church to the Stein residence. We are so thankful to our Church family who remem-
bered us when I fell & broke my left arm & fractured my vertebrae. We thank you all for your prayers, visits, cards &
food that was provided for us. What a blessing!! At the same time, Russell spent four days in the hospital. So, we were
again blessed with help from our “Church family”. Thank you. Please continue your prayers, as Russell is scheduled for
surgery on Feb. 22.

Study Suggests Higher Stroke Risk with Diet Soda; February 10, 2011
LOS ANGELES (AP) - It’s not definitive proof of harm, but new research raises concern about diet soda. It suggests
that people who drink it every day have higher risks for stroke & heart attack than those who drink no soda of any kind
at all.
The findings come from a federally funded study of about 2,500 adults in the New York City area.
Doctors have no explanation for why diet soda might be risky. It could be that people who drink lots of it also fail to ex-
ercise, weigh more or have other risk factors like high blood pressure & smoking. However, the researchers took these
factors into account & found the trend remained.
What to do? Drink water, the experts suggest.
