Ereaders now come in varying optio ons and styless. Use the chaart below to ssee which device would bee
best for you. Remember to consider cost, availab bility and conntent! It is also important tto think abou
ut
how you w will use the ereader – worrk vs. home; inside vs. outsside.
Helpful terms
• E‐ink – more paper‐like and mimics the same conditions; can easily be read outdoors, but
difficult to read in reduced lighting; typically monochrome display and can run up to 30 times
longer than LED screens without recharging
• LED backlit – more like a laptop display; can be read in reduced lighting, but difficult to read
outdoors
• DRM ‐ determines what an end user can do with a digital file by the copyright holder
• Format ‐ the arrangement of text on printed output or a display screen
Format
Not every format is created equal – or available to every reader.
• Epub – Open Standard for ebooks; originally created by the International Digital Publishing
Standard
o Kobo; eReader; iBook; Nook; Sony E‐Reader; Android phone; Galaxy Tab; and computers
with Firefox
• Kindle – format created by Amazon for the Kindle
o Kindle; iPad; iPhone; Android phones; and Galaxy Tab
• PDF – Portable Document Format was created by Adobe, and is licensed for free
o All ereaders listed in the chart on previous page can read pdf’s
• Plain Text – exists for ebooks and allows a lot of data to exist in a very small file

• HTML – is the markup language used for most webpages
o All ereaders listed in the chart on previous page can read HTML
Understanding Digital Rights Management (DRM)
Digital Rights Management permits publishers to control copying, printing, and sharing. Types of DRM
