MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO LIFE SCIENCE

QUARTER 2

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Explain the evolving concept of life based on emerging pieces of evidence
2. Describe how unifying themes (e.g., structure and function, evolution, and ecosystems) in the study of
life show the connections among living things and how they interact with each other and with their
environment

HOOK

OPENING PRAYER
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Great day, dear learners! I am Ma’am Lalaine Ghulam and I will be your teacher in Earth and Life Science. In
this module, we will know how life originated.

In this unit, you will learn about the studies on the origin of the first life forms, as well as the connections among
living things and how they interact with each other and with their environment.
When you observe your surroundings, some questions pop up into your head: “Why do organisms grow differently?”
“What other living things exist” “How do these animals survive their environment?”

ENGAGE

It took the newly-formed Earth nearly 1 billion years to cool enough for the first life to appear.
Scientists have been studying living things and the living world around us for several hundred years, but
only in the last few decades have we really begun to understand how the world around us came to be the way it is.

Concepts of Life
The Earth is much older than life. Based on radioactive decay studies of rocks, it was revealed that the
Earth is around 4.5 billion years old- 1 billion years older than the oldest fossils. So, how did life begin? Where did
life come from?
There were no witnesses to the origin of life. But scientists have come up with at least three possibilities
on how life could have begun:

1. Extraterrestrial origin- the hypothesis was that life originated on another planet outside our solar
system. Life was then carried here on a meteorite or an asteroid and colonized the earth. However, this hypothesis
has not been proven.
2. Divine Creation- many people believe that life was put on Earth by divine forces. This belief is common
to many of the world’s religions which have not been explained by science.
3. Origin from nonliving matter- Scientists believe that life arose on Earth from inanimate matter, after the
newly-formed Earth had cooled. They stated that random events produced stable molecules that could reproduce

Other Unifying Themes

2

Level of Organization- there is a hierarchy of increasing complexity within cells, from the molecular level of DNA (where
the chemistry of life occurs), to the organelle level (where the cellular activities are organized), to the cell (the smallest

REFLECTION
We learned about the studies of on the origin of the first life forms, as well as the connections among living things
and how they interact with each other and with their environment. Based on your own understandings and belief, how
does life originated? Use the given criteria below as basis in answering the question.

TRANSFER
All living things evolved from simple life forms. Based on what you have learned, why do you think we need to
value life and why living things have to be cared for? Use the given criteria below as basis in answering the question.
