City (is singular) – one city


Cities (is plural) – two or more cities

Examples of cities:
New York is a city.
- Tokyo is a city.

In English, we use:
- To Be + from + city
- I am from Argentina.

- He is from Istanbul.
- She is from Tokyo.
- We are from Buenos Aires, in Argentina.
- They are from Italy.

Country (is singular) – one country


Countries (is plural) – two or more countries

TO BE + PROFESSION

To say your profession or occupation in English you use TO BE.


It is important to put the article A or AN before the profession when we are talking aboutone person.

A / An

It is used before a singular noun that is general or when its identity is not known. There are certain situations to
keep in mind.
 A (before a singular noun beginning with a consonant sound)
Example: A lamp, a house, a rat, etc.
 An (before a singular noun beginning with a vowel sound)
Example: An apple, an airplane, an elephant, etc.

Plural nouns

If we want to make a noun plurar we just ad –S to the ending, for example: Car – Cars. Window – Windows.
But there are some rules as well:

 If the singular noun ends in ‑s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z, add ‑es to the end to make it plural.
Ex: truss – trusses, bus – buses, marsh – marshes, lunch – lunches, tax – taxes, blitz – blitzes

 If the noun ends with -f or -fe, the f is often changed to -ve before adding the -s to form the
plural version. Ex: wife – wives, wolf – wolves
Exceptions: roof – roofs, belief – beliefs, chef – chefs, chief – chiefs

 If a singular noun ends in -y and the letter before the -y is a consonant, change the ending to -ies
to make the noun plural.
Ex: city – cities, puppy – puppies

If the singular noun ends in -y and the letter before the -y is a vowel, simply add an -s to
make it plural. Ex: ray – rays, boy – boys

 If the singular noun ends in -o, add -es to


make it plural.Ex: potato – potatoes, tomato
– tomatoes
Exceptions: photo – photos, piano – pianos, halo – halos

 There are nouns that don’t follow any rule, they are irregular
Ex: Dice – Die, Goose – Geese, etc.
