Public Health Philosophy

Choosing a specific population was very hard for me because there are so many
populations to choose from in regards to Public Health. The area I finally decided on serving,
improving, and focusing on is medical care. My reasoning for choosing this focus is because I
have a connection with medical care and know-how valuable it is to make sure that care is up to
date and efficient for communities and patients. Ever since I was a little girl I have always
wanted to go to college and make a difference within medical care, from wanting to be a
veterinarian to a nurse to a doctor to now a physical therapist. Secondly, I work within healthcare
as a therapy technician / front desk coordinator and I can say COVID-19 was the biggest hit to
the healthcare industry in a very long time. From healthcare businesses having to furlough their
employees, to businesses struggling to find staff to stay on the job during the beginning of the
outbreak, the strained COVID-19 placed on the system was evident.
My passion to serve and improve medical care brought me to Public Health not only
because I wanted to make a difference with my major but also because I wanted to gather a better
understanding of what takes place outside in our communities. My major is public health, I say it
with pride and am very honored to have the possibility to gain the knowledge and experience to
be able to make a difference now and in the future. I plan to take my degree and continue my
education to become a physical therapist. I will use my knowledge gathered from my degree to
help me build the eight responsibilities with my patients and co-workers around me. With the
eight responsibilities from Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), I will be able to see my
patients and assess their needs to plan which health programs best suit their situations to
implement the proper health program that will benefit them most. Continuing with evaluating the
research of the given health program and managing how it is going, communicating with my
patient how the health program is going for them, or communicating any changes to better their
care. Leading my patients and co-workers by educating and sharing knowledge to better each
other's ethics and professionalism, which everyone around me will be treated with the utmost
respect and health equity no matter what.
Within the next two years, I will graduate with my undergraduate degree, and plan to
become accepted into graduate school for a Doctor in physical therapy. Once I graduate from
graduate school, my goal is to become a physical therapist and give back to my community
within medical care. I hope to benefit society by giving back hope that they have lost. There is
nothing more heartbreaking than not being able to have the ability to receive the necessary
medical care or someone who is receiving the necessary medical care but does not wish to be
given the care because they believe they will not need it much longer. I want to give back
everything that was given to me growing up, that sense of support to push through every
hardship passing through. I want to give everyone that sense of hope that everything is going to
be okay and to not worry they are going to be put in the most caring hands for medical care. I
will make sure that every health program I give in my patients’ evaluation is best suited for them
and I will continue to communicate with them to make sure that their health program is going
well or ask what needs to be changed to benefit them most.
