Introduction:
Content-based image retrieval system (CBIR) has been one of the most active areas of
research in recent years. One of the main reasons is due to the explosion in the number
of images available in digital format. Combining this factor along with the ease of
transferring media through the Internet, digital images become very easy to be obtained
by any person for personal, industrial or commercial purposes. In many industrial
applications, an effective image retrieval system becomes essential for the access of the
most appropriate images from the database. Examples of such systems are the automatic
diagnostic system for medical applications, and, face detection for security surveillance
system. CBIR is a system that retrieves an image based on the semantic or visual
content of the query which can either be in the forms of key-words or image. The
images in these systems are often indexed via key-words, image feature vectors or
a combination of both.

Background of the problem:

Currently most widely used image search engine is GOOGLE. It provides its users with
textual annotation. Not many images are annotated with proper description so many
relevant images go unmatched. But CBIR which is a content based retrieval system can
better retrieve those images and information that matches the query of the user, supports
users to retrieve image by color, shape and texture . We also provide an interface where
user can give query images as input, automatically extracts the color feature and
compared with the images in database, retrieve the matched image.

Objective:
The main objective behind taking this project is to make a system in which we retrieve
images from database on the basis of their content like color, shape etc.
Scope of the project:

This project is specially developed for I.T.S. Engg. College(Greater noida) to generate a
content based image retrieval system. But this can be used in many fields which is
related with it like in because it is flexible, easy to use and meet the requirements.

Modules description:

There will three modules in our Content-Based Image Retrieval project

Namely-:

1. Administrator Module
2. User Module
3. Searching Module

Administrator Module-: (Work done by the Administrator)

 Maintaining the image database

 Update the database according to user request
 Classify the images for efficient searching

User Module-: (Work done by the User)

 Upload the query image

Searching Module-: (Work done by the application)

 Searching based on a given image

 Integrate the search with the existing application
Workflow:
The basic steps that we should follow in our project development are as
follows-:

1. Collect the possible images for our database

2. Developing a user interface in which a user can enter his query image
3. Developing the application that can retrieve the most appropriate image
according to our query
4. Maintaining a database updating phenomenon for making quick
retrievals
