V. Lesson Development
A. Introduction
To start the lesson off, I will have a Google Slides presentation up on the
Smartboard. With each slide we will have a class discussion about the questions
on the Google Slides.
B. Lesson development (activities, procedures)
I will go over the elements of narratives and as we work through them the
students will be told to take notes in Notability. I will bring up the story arc
graphic and we will walk through it together as a class. As we work through
writing a narrative this week, the students will be given a blank story arc to fill in.
This will ensure that the students have a proper story to tell. I will explain to my
students how anything can become a narrative as long as it has the elements of a
story arc. I will model for the students with popular movies and their story arcs
to show them how many topics can fit into a story arc. Then, we will brainstorm
topics for a narrative as a class before the students will be instructed to do a cold
write of a narrative. Throughout this week, we will be returning to their narrative
pieces and revising them. The students will be given a blank copy of a story arc
which they will have to fill out as we work through this week. This will be a time
for the students to brain dump ideas for their narratives and just get something
written. During this work time, I will have my screen projected on the board and
will model for them what my writing process looks like. I will stress to my
students that this first cold write does not have to be perfect. Spelling errors,
grammar, structure, etc will all worked on as we continue through the week.
D. Closure (summary)
In closure, I will go over the elements of a story arc and other elements of a
narrative. I will check for understanding and see if there are any parts that my
students are confused before we move on with this unit.
VI. Assessment/evaluation
The students will be informally assessed on their discussions on the elements of a
narrative. They will also be informally assessed with their cold written narrative. At the
end of the unit, the students will be formally assessed on an essay. They will be able to
choose from one of the three types of writing that we have gone over: narrative,
expository, or argument.
VIII. Self-evaluation
Overall, I was happy with the lesson. One of the things that I would change in the future
is to have small group discussions with my students so that they are not just passively
learning. Besides that, I think that the lesson went well. I am still learning about my
students and their personalities.
