Deltas are distinct territories
formed by debris deposits that are
transported by rivers, where they
flow into the sea, and they are
shaped by water currents and wind.
Making up the terminal part of plain
lands, deltas in many cases drain
populations and resources from the
rest of the territory. In other cases,
they make up important agricultural
lands and natural reserves.
In any case, for their intrinsically
instable nature, they are singular
territories that are exposed to great
risks, both environmental and those
caused by man. Their geographic
position and specific morphology,

search for equilibrium. Moreover,
they are often exposed to the risks
of a gradual demographic, economic

specific condition of these areas,
in the following pages, the aim is
to retrace the existing relations
between the specific territorial
structures of certain european deltas
and the complex dynamics that are
determined by such conditions.

The effects induced by exogenous
transformations on certain
endogenous conditions, such
as connectivity and demographic
dynamics raise important questions
regarding our investigative
operations. The outline, illustrated
below, introduces the themes dealt
with in the construction of the
Atlas and suggests some transversal
readings, which may be useful
in envisioning new strategies of
sustainable development; ones that
are capable of managing intrinsic
fragilities with strong links to the
real values of these territories.
